Have to say I cheated... I called them and begged to take my pre-order... I've actually called and placed an order for that ever elusive, found in a dead guy's closet, acetate Diz, Miles, Trane, Monk, McCoy, Lee Morgan, Oscar Peterson, Art Blakey jam session... I was even told there was only 2 left... (Never even made it to last chance... !!!! ) They're already taking preorders for those??? DAMN! I wonder if they'd take my preorder for that Quartet Out set they haven't even thought of yet? ←

I'm sure this has been covered before... and I know a little about the European vs. US vs. other countries (Spain) licensing issues but here's my story and question... A friend gave me the 4CD Proper Box... "Roy Eldridge - Little Jazz Trumpet Giant." Disc 4 is entitled "Dale's Wail." When the Mosaic box came out, I was tempted to order it and actually had ordered it before I looked carefully at the Proper Box and the Mosaic discography. Mosaic's set... two sessions (or so) comprise "Dale's Wal;" with the following from their website.. "(D) THE ROY ELDRIDGE QUINTET: Roy Eldridge (tp), Oscar Peterson (org), Barney Kessel (g), Ray Brown (b), Jo Jones (d). Fulton Studios, NYC, April 23, 1953 1222-1 Love For Sale Clef 89056 1223-5 Dale’s Wail - 1224-3 The Man I Love Clef (Au) CL011 (45) 1225-2 Oscar’s Arrangement - 1223-10 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued 1223-12 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued 1223-13 Dale’s Wail (alt) previously unissued Note: All issued titles on Clef EPC200, MGC150, MGC705, Verve MGV8089. Take 13 of Dale’s Wail was originally chosen as the master take, but take 5 was ultimately used for release. The alternate takes of Dale's Wail were recorded at the end of the session. _____________________________________________________________________________ (E) THE ROY ELDRIDGE QUINTET: Roy Eldridge (tp), Oscar Peterson (p), Herb Ellis (g), Ray Brown (b), Alvin Stoller (d). Radio Recorders, LA, December 10, 1953 1379-6 Willow Weep For Me Clef 89110 1380-2 Somebody Loves Me - 1381-1 When Your Lover Has Gone Clef 89123 1382-8 When It’s Sleepy Time Down South Clef 89116 1382-9 When It’s Sleepy Time Down South (alt) previously unissued 1383-1 Feeling A Draft 1384-2 Don’t Blame Me 1385-3 Echoes Of Harlem Clef 89116 1385-4 Echoes Of Harlem (10” LP master) 1386-3 I Can’t Get Started Clef 89123 Note: For 1384, discographies and Verve files list take –1, which is actually a false start, as the master. All titles (except 1382-9 & 1385-3) issued on Clef MGC162 All titles (except 1382-9 & 1385-4) issued on Clef MGC705, Verve MGV8089" When I found this out... I cancelled my Mosaic order... (since I hate having doubles and had concerns that there was more duplication than that one session.... ) I'm assuming that Mosaic has the "legitmate" rights to this? I'm also assuming that the Mosaic sound is way better than the Proper? How can this happen? Why doesn't Cuscuna go after these guys? Should I ditch the Proper box and get the Mosaic??? Why??? thanks... And how often does this happen? Am I the 1st one to notice this?

Ah... sidewinder.. but that's the beauty of the pre-order.... pay now... forget about ... wait for several months until the set comes out.... and it gets delayed a month... and then just went it arrives in the mail... a NEW "must-have" set is announced and ready for pre-order..... hmmmmm..... Now I know why my checkbook never gets balanced.... (afraid to look...)

Hey Ron... How did you get here from over so fast at aaj..../jcorner... Did you teleport or something??? Or do you know something about this INTERNET that we don't????? "Record" may technically still be correct since a CD is, in fact, a RECORDing. ←

New Columbia Legacy Reissues Copy Protected?
tranemonk replied to Brad's topic in Miscellaneous Music
this is nonsense!!! I bought the Dexter and the Brookmeyer and had no idea about this until I put them in my PC's cd tray.... I keep an electronic database of all my CD's (1700) and this won't be read by my software app.... so I have to install their piece of crap software to PLAY the CD.... (forget about copying it...)???! I emailed Sony to complain... (that was a waste of time but made me feel a little better... ) and am sending the CD's back.... You SHOULD NEVER have to alter your computer simply to play a music CD.... (Looks like a good lawsuit to me....) Do we know if they are going to do this with ALL legacy reissues???? Since I guess I'll not be buying those anytime soon.. -

Tell me why I should get the Buddy Rich set?
tranemonk replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
as the thread starter.... (and with some wise advice)... I went ahead and bought the Buddy and Sweets CD to get a sense if I would like the upcoming Mosaic set.... (since it's very likely that session will be included in the Mosaic set). (Only cost me $8 on overstock.com. ) After listening to that CD, I have to say I can understand all the fury on this thread... Seems like you either love Buddy Rich, hate him or at the very least respect his contributions to the music.... When I frst put it on... and heard the 1st cut... basically a 4 minute drum solo... I was like... OKAY... that's at least one Mosaic I can cross off my "WANT" list... (since I wasn't into it....) but...... as the record goes on.... It's REALLY good!!. Great playing by Sweets... Barney Kessel... enjoyable as usual but a bit understated.... and Rich's remaining work on the record, I thoroughly enjoyed... Very nice brush work and his solos seemed to "make sense" to my ears.... So I left this CD... wanting to hear more... So I think I'm definitely in the "gonna buy it" category... Thanks for ALL the input..... And as with all of this music... it's ultimately what our own ears tell us.. (as to whether we like someone's music or not)....and my ears want to hear more.... Oh and one other point... the question was bought up earlier as to whether or not the Rich was an "odd choice" for a Mosaic set.... Based on what I heard (and the little I know) about him and his role, I would have to say it is very consistent with the Mosaic approach and focus.... Someone who had an instrumental role in the music and focusing on one period or aspect of thier career.... Overall, this is a set I'm looking forward to..... Thanks for the lively debate.... Finally... as a complete layman (read - non-musician...) does his drumming sound the tiniest bit like Art Blakely???? Guess I know what my wife's birthday present to me is.... -

tranemonk replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I completely understand what you're saying... Sometimes you're in the mood for vocals, sometimes not... but the beauty of this set.. is that I suspect it will grow on you.. not only over weeks but years.... Good purchase! -

. . . but she looked so great in those gloves and high heels--naaah, on second thought, better not try that one. ← yes you can... just add she's 80+ now... and YOU (honey) look much better in high heels... Or how about....It's REALLY great music and I'll be a very sad, unhappy person if I don't get it... OR.... Do what I Do.... Order online, hide receipt, intercept DHL (or UPS) delivery while she's in the bathroom. hide box in closet... She'll never know....!!! -
thank you Ron... And why wouldn't I like a good looking (then) woman who could sing her ass off????? ← What's the deal TM, you trying to start an anti-J.J. lobby? ← No, he just has a "thing" for Anita. ←
