I suspect the Wilder mix was used in that box. Just checked the accompanying book and as far as I can see it says nothing about the mixes that were used. Haven't listened to Bitches Brew in the box yet. I've now compared the two versions I've got - The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions and The Complete Columbia Album Collection and they appear to be two different masterings. The latter is much "quieter" (= less compressed) and there are differences in the balance between instruments. For what it's worth, the production credits at the very end of the book for the 70 CD set says "Mastered by Mark Wilder and Maria Triana at Battery Studios, NYC". Mark Wilder has stated somewhere (can't find the quote right now) that he selected the masterings for the 70CD-set he thought sounded best. He may have picked the mastering for the 2006 Japanese mini-LP sleeve reissue of Bitches Brew (Sony SICP 1220-1); according to the inserts and the obi that mastering was done in 2006 by Mr Wilder himself and his remix was used.

I'm sorry if this is common knowledge, but I thought the original mix was on "The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions" 4CD set. Is it not? No, it's the Wilder remix. "Miles Beyond" article about the making of The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions Hoffman forum thread about the upcoming sets (with several participants from this forum ) Thanks, Hans! I've got one observation and two questions: If they are now re-releasing the original mix, I wonder about the validity of the following statement from the "Miles Beyond" article: The questions: What mix was used in the Complete Columbia Album Collection from last year, and how does the non-Japan CD reissue from ca 1990 (which is said to have the original mix) fare in comparsion with other versions? I suspect the Wilder mix was used in that box. Just checked the accompanying book and as far as I can see it says nothing about the mixes that were used. Haven't listened to Bitches Brew in the box yet.

There are several threads about this on the Blindman's Blues Forum, this is the most recent one. There's also a thread on the Hoffman forum - post #7 says it all in my view.

Late 2010 at the earliest, but probably later. Haven't heard from them lately. There were no LP albums in the 1930s, just 78s. Tranemonk probably meant reissue albums. It should have all the material from the two classic old Ellington Era 3-lp boxes which are still sitting on my shelf as well as innumerable European reissues over the years. Wish we'd see it sooner rather than later! gregmo If I remember correctly the Ellington Era 3LP-boxes also included recordings from the 1920s. Those will not be included in the upcoming Mosaic.

Did Mosaic make a blunder....

The general rule in the European Union is that if the declared value of a package from outside the EU exceeds a certain amount, you have to pay tax/duty. I guess it's the same in Canada. -
Who's Alastair? How do you get him and get stuff from him please? MG Alastair is Alastair Robertson, founder and owner of Hep. Hep website (you can also find the link elsewhere in this thread) Thanks Hans - but "Warmin' up" is still "temporarily unavailable". How does one get a copy, as Ghost did? MG Why don't you use the "contact" button in the left-hand column and ask Alastair if he can supply a copy?

I don't think Sony will issue a "Complete" Ellington set. A set with Sony-owned 1930s material is still planned by Mosaic. -

Custom forms are mandatory on shipments from non-EU countries to the European Union. -
Good to hear Alastair is stocking repressings. I hope things are picking up for him and Hep.

Curious to know what the postage is on a haul like that? Must be a small fortune... When the sets finally reach Belgium, the buyer probably also will have to fork out a small fortune on tax/duty and fees. He'll probably have to fork out for the stuff he DIDN'T order, too MG If he did get that stuff at all - but if he did and returned it, he can get a refund from customs if he did indeed have to pay tax/duty and if he can prove that he did actually return it. (That's a lot of ifs... ) Mosaic should be very concerned about things going wrong like this, it gives them a bad name. -

That doesn't sound good. Let's hope they can charge the extra cost to the company that's taking care of the shipping. -
The 1994 remaster is the Virgin reissue: Amazon - I can't guarantee that the sellers on Amazon are offering the correct version, of course; I'd ask them first before ordering anything.
-
Because they don't own any Stones recordings after Let It Bleed, which came out in 1969. The Stones' contracts with both Allen Klein (ABKCO) and Decca Records (London in the United States) expired in 1970. Exile on Main Street was recorded between July 1971 and March 1972; it was released in 1972.

I merged the two threads

Remastering engineers are not always to blame, they're often just doing what the producers and/or artists tell them to do.
-
You're the only one who can answer that. song samples of one of the albums (scroll down) separate albums on Amazon (song samples included) If you don't have any Russell, start with his earlier albums. You can find reviews of his albums on AMG - for what they're worth

Hip-O sets are $20 per CD on their site, which I think is quite steep, especially if you don't like "modern" masterings - lots of their sets are quite loud and have boosted highs. Pity, because musically some of their sets are worthwhile.
-
The yellow graph is from the original CD release, the grey one from the new remaster. Compared to the former, the latter shows added compression and limiting - it's what some would call "brickwalled": loud and no dynamics left.
-
Seriously, in case there's any doubt: Hip-O is a Universal reissue label and this release is legit; the recordings on this set are owned by Universal.
