Celibidache was an interesting conductor, but somehow his interpretations don't grab me; to my ears he doesn't seem to be able to keep up the tension as it were, I lose interest after a while.

No, it wasn't.

Those TOCJ-6xxx masterings have a lot more compression and reduced dynamics compared to older Japanese and American non-RVG Blue Note CD reissues. Not my cup of tea. I agree. It is a matter of taste though. I wouldn't say to anyone not to buy these if it is an easy route to a title which is otherwise hard to find. And they are more consistent than the (J)RVG series which sometimes sound like an old cassette. That 'consistency' comes at the price of reduced fidelity to the music as recorded and to the Blue Note LP sound, though as some point out the RVG LP mixes were pretty much red dial efforts and not really a shot at acoustic realism. I think at 1100 Yen these are a good way to fill out gaps and - maybe - fun! I was referring to the TOCJ-6xxx series, compared to older Japanese and American non-RVG Blue Note CD reissues. I was not talking about the upcoming TOCJ-8xxx CD reissues or any RVG series. I know, and I agreed. Then I reverted to my discussion of (J)RVGs. That transition was so smooth that I missed it...

I don't remember exactly what was wrong with the third Moncur disc, but Mosaic did indeed replace it. By the way, what do you mean by "TOCJ"? All of Toshiba's EMI jazz CDs have that prefix. If you are referring to the Toshiba "Blue Note Works" series from the 1990s (TOCJ-15xx, TOCJ-16xx and TOCJ-4xxx), those are no longer made.

I'm guessing you're referring to the 24-bit remastered Blue Note CDs that Toshiba put out in the late 1990s/early 2000s to celebrate Blue Note's 60th Anniversary. I bought several at the time and to my ears those discs sounded loud and harsh; I sold them all. I'm told that many Toshiba Blue Note CD reissues since then use those masterings, but I can't confirm this.

Hiroshi got the first name of this singer in the May 5, 2010 batch wrong: TOCP 70838 Oosterhuis,Traincha(vo)/Never Can Say Goodbye She's Dutch and her name is Trijntje Oosterhuis. "Traincha" is more or less how it's pronounced.

Nah, I just put my reading glasses on

I did a search and found 4 of my own posts about the problem and its solution, here (post #5), here (post #232), here (post #160) and here (post #144).
-
Despite the fact that the solution has been posted several times in various threads in this forum since Jim upgraded the board, the same problem is posted over and over again. Maybe the solution should be pinned in "Forums Discussion".
-
I also agree with Claude's assessment.

Are you sure you got the right Wilbur Harden? According to Leonard Feather/Ira Gitler's "Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz", the first edition of the "New Grove Dictionary of Jazz" and AMG (All Music Guide) the jazz trumpeter was born in 1925, while Wikipedia has December 31, 1924 as his birthday.

Considering that the recordings are not very good I don't think the sound on the original Atlantic Coltrane CDs is that bad. They were mastered by Stephen Innocenzi and some of them do have extra tracks compared to the LPs. I'd avoid the later digipak reissues on Rhino, they sound as if the higher frequencies were boosted and I find them fatiguing. I don't have them anymore, but I believe the mastering was done by Dan Hersch. The CD version of the Heavyweight Champion box sounds OK to me. It was mastered by Gene Paul.

Upcoming Lucky Thompson Select tracklisting
J.A.W. replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
That's a Proper (U.K.) set; the Jackson/Thompson Savoy material on that one was not licensed. Just thought I'd mention it BEWARE " Come Rain or Shine "is omitted as well as Thompson's ballad feature "Whats New" . Proper claims they will correct these problems sometime. As I mentioned in my post "there is also quite a bit of the Milt Jackson/Lucky Thompson Savoy material", never said it was complete, I also posted "I think there is one tune missing and they also have one tune on twice by mistake". I never knew Proper had issues with infringing on copyrights J.A.W., thanks for that news flash, your finger is most defintely on the pulse there. Ah, the usual sarcasm from our friend in Ireland. How nice. By the way, that "beware" part was posted by Bill B, not by me; somehow it ended up in my post that was quoted by Bill. -
Kenton Presents: Sal Salvador is part of the Connoisseur CD Sal Salvador Quintet/Quartet Tom 1960 started this thread with, that's why I didn't mention it in my post above.
-
Yep, the Bethlehem albums: • Frivolous Sal; 1956 quartet recordings • Shades of Sal Salvador; 1956-1957 quartet/quintet/septet recordings • A Tribute to the Greats; 1957 quartet recordings which were all issued on CD in Japan. They're great. His late 1950s Decca big-band album Colors in Sound is also excellent.

The Threadgill/Air Mosaic is now scheduled for release in July/August 2010.

The link doesn't work on my PC, I get the "page not available" error message. Maybe this link will work. (edit) Hm, the original link does now work on my PC. Strange things are happening in cyberspace... -
