The MVCI CD is a Japanese release from the early 1990s.

Those French gatefold LPs were reissued on three 2CD-sets in the RCA "Jazz Tribune" series, with the same titles: The Young Louis (1930-1933), From the Big Band to the All Stars (1946-1956) and Louis Armstrong at Town Hall The Complete Town Hall Concert, 17 May 1947.

The earlier set suffered from noise reduction (and sounded dead to me); maybe the newer set doesn't - though I doubt it, they probably just reissued the older one.

You're fired!" scenario. the issues over there (and most forums i would assume, but there maybe more so?) could be picked over ad nauseum but certainly aren't worth the time here. plus, i assume the OP was serious and that, of course, sucks. This set contains some very good music. Recommended.

I used to enjoy Mr A on British TV years ago, but I think that's a bit of an exaggeration MG Indeed. I'd say it's a gross exaggeration.

He talks too much

What I find annoying is that some people over there who previously weren't interested seem to think they know all about jazz as soon as they've picked up a few Hoffman-mastered Analogue Productions/Blue Note SACDs. A few also seem to think Louis Armstrong's career started in the 1950s, while for others jazz begins in that decade...

Not to defend the Hoffman site or anything, but it's not a more or less independent site where everyone can say (within reason) what they like; its main purpose is to promote Hoffman's interests in the music biz, and to protect his interests the moderators have set up an extensive and extremely strict book of rules. I think the moderation and some of the rules over there are over the top and I have told them so a few times - not that it made any difference, of course Another thing I don't like over there (to put it mildly) is the extreme idolatry and sycophancy; it's not the exclusive domain of the Hoffman site, of course, but I find it sickening.

the artie shaw thesaurus transcriptions cd on the hep label is out now. unfortunately there is no mention of it on the hep web site. i ordered it via jpc. i heard that the hep label has problems but i hope that they bring us more wonderful music in the future! keep boppin´ marcel Yep, owner Alastair Robertson told me a while ago the label isn't doing too well. All the more reason to buy a few (or more) of his excellent releases.

Several others were also issued in the 32XD and MVCI series, such as Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Quincy Jones, Keith Jarrett, Johnny Hartman, Count Basie, Art Blakey, J.J. Johnson, Charlie Haden, Albert Ayler, and Duke Ellington titles.

I didn't like the Japanese UCCI reissues that I've heard, they sounded harsh to me, with boosted highs. The American digipaks that were mastered by Erick Labson in the mid- and late 1990s aren't my favourites either, but to me they sound better than those Japanese ones and they're cheap. Other board members' mileages vary Until something better comes along, I generally prefer the 1987 (32XD prefix) or 1991 (MVCI prefix) Japanese Impulse! CDs; as far as I know they share the same masterings. I don't know which Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane albums, if any, were released in those series, though.
