  1. Steve gets to speak negatively about other engineer's work and that seems to be ok. That's the part I don't like. If we say something negative about Steve, we're taking food from his children's mouths. If only Steve was as concerned about these other engineers, if only..... Well, it's part of the business as well: speaking negatively against your competitors. I mean if I remastered Soul Station and RVG did the same, speaking negatively about RVG would push my product. Welcome to the free trade. That's all fine with me except the part where he and his gorts sqash any negativity towards Steve and his work because it's against the forum's policies. (Happened to see this post and thought I'd reply) No, it's because they feel that negativity towards Steve Hoffman and his work can harm his business interests and threaten his livelihood as a result. Please note that this is not what I think, it's how Steve Hoffman and the gorts at his forum see it. I don't think Jim would take it kindly if members would post anything negative here about him, his playing and his band - such negativity would certainly not bring in more dates, would it... Sorry, J.A.W. but you asked for it. From my point of view, running up a forum in order to promote your work is absolutely legal and legit. Deleting 'negative' posts or critics is absolutely legal, though not very 'elegant' (but, hey it's THE RULE, if you don't like it post elsewhere). Denigrating your competitor's work, aka RVG or Bernie Grundmann or anyonelse, is frankly disgusting and I am not sure it's absolutely legal. I mean everytime all the SH's gorts jump at the throat of every other remastering engineers, a part Mr. Hoffman, they are threating their livelihoods. If I were a competitor of SH I probably could sue his gorts and mr. H. for slander and damage. About Jim and Organissimo. First have a look at this thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=33019 Second I don't think Jim would delete a post where someone said his last cd is not at the same level of Larry Young' Unity...isn't it? Please read my posts carefully and don't put words into my mouth - I never said anything about Steve Hoffman condemning the work of other mastering engineers; as a matter of fact I don't think he should do that, but that's not the point in my posts. I was explaining why negativity towards him and his work is not tolerated on his forum, that's all. By the way, I think the rudeness and insults in some of the previous posts do not help getting the message across and it says a lot about this forum and some of its members that offensive remarks and personal attacks are made and allowed here. It's got nothing to do with freedom of expression, it's just mud slinging, nothing else.

  3. Maybe you can pm a moderator with your concern, but you can't talk about it on the board for all to see, so how can you post on that board without it looking like nothing is wrong. If you try, your post will either be edited or deleted. It's happened to me several times, so I give up. Even my pm converstaion with Steve wasn't very helpful or educational. He never really answered my questions and told me in a cryptic way that he couldn't respond due to job security. Here I was thinking that someone who actually works with master tapes would be the expert and could provide me with simple generic answers about them. He basically backed his moderators actions up by saying they were just trying to protect him. It appeared to me that he thought I was after him on a personal level, even though I kept saying that I was interested in a few "facts" about master tape life span that he was alluding to. I will never believe that magnetic tape has an infinite life span as he and some of his gorts believe. Nothing lasts forever and to propose such an idea as fact is just ludicrous. Simple - if you don't like the forum's rules (such as sending PMs to moderators instead of airing criticism publicly) and/or the way things are handled/moderated, don't post. Edit: I've had enough of this and I'm out of here. I was just responding to this. I wonder why some people who are very critical about the Hoffman forum on this board are posting over there as if nothing's wrong... If you look at my post count for the amount of time I've been on the board, you'll see I don't post very much there anyway. I'll be posting even less from now on and may stop going there at all. I apologize if I hit a nerve. No need to apologize, it wasn't directed at you specifically.

  5. There is hardly any forum that I know of that accepts publicly aired criticism; the Hoffman forum is no exception in that respect, so that proves nothing.
  6. I PMed my criticism because that's one of the forum rules over there.
  7. What I meant was that I find posting criticism on other forums that have nothing to do with the forum one is critical about and at the same time posting on that forum as if nothing's wrong hypocritical. Just my view.
  8. Maybe, but I find it quite hypocritical. Edit: I've PMed quite a few critical notes to some of the moderators on the Hoffman forum and I've never had problems. I always got replies that were reasonable, even though I didn't agree with some of them.
  9. I wonder why some people who are very critical about the Hoffman forum on this board are posting over there as if nothing's wrong...
  10. That depends. I understand Steve Hoffman was hired solely to do the mastering, nothing else; if that is correct he cannot be held responsible for the quality of the vinyl. What I think they could do at the Hoffman site, however, is forward any complaints to those who are responsible or at least provide customer service contact info. Yes, he is not responsible for the production of the actual vinyl, but since he's involved with the product, I don't think he's really in a position to say anything negative. At least that was the jest of my communications with Steve about the mag tape topic. The industry is a small one and if you bad mouth the end product while it's still in circulation, you might not get the call for the next job. True.

  12. First of all, this is not to defend Steve Hoffman and his site. Furthermore, I am not interested in those vinyl projects and haven't read the threads/posts about them, so I can't say anything about what happened. Steve Hoffman is working in the music business and negative or critical threads/posts can harm his interests, and that's why the moderators on the Hoffman site edit or delete anything they find inappropriate in this regard, including criticism of the various vinyl projects he was hired to do by Warner and others. Like it or not, in that sense the Hoffman site is not independent. That said, I think it is inappropriate not to address the issue of bad vinyl, especially in view of the high prices of the records. If they don't want to do that publicly, they should at least provide customer service contact info and refer complaints to the manufacturers.
  13. Good chance if so that it will appear on Amazon UK in a year or so time at a good price. I'll wait until then. So will I - if I decide to buy it, that is; the audio clips (right-hand side of the page) didn't quite convince me and I wasn't exactly a fan of Jones' This Is How I Feel About Jazz and The Birth of a Band albums. Good playing but nothing special, at least not to my ears.
  14. Mosaic increased the price of its CD sets to $17 per disc some time ago when the Jack Teagarden Roulette set was released. Correct. If I remember correctly the price of the Selects was increased to $44 at the same time.
  15. I wonder if Universal will release the Quincy Jones set in Europe.

  19. Congratulations, Dan. What a great team
  20. Yep, very annoying.
  21. There were reports on Dutch TV and the BBC that San Diego was hit worst by the fires.
  22. Moving across the pond, David? I like visiting San Diego so I am looking into property there. All a bit hypothetical. That's not the best place to go right now, it's a bit hot...
