  1. Not Charles III? Pity, there might have been another Cromwell...
  2. Roy Milton
  3. Tell me about it... A neighbour aged 59 died last week and one of my best friends passed away at age 50 some time ago. Ouch.
  4. Sorry to hear this. He will indeed be missed. Gone too young.
  5. They are being reissued on the Boplicity label, which is owned by Ace (U.K.), who, if I remember correctly, own the rights to Dootone. http://acerecords.co.uk/boplicity-label
  6. The Chu Berry and Dizzy Gillespie sets are now running low.
  7. I frequented Waterstone's in Kensington High in the late 1980s. Is that store still around?
  8. U.S. only, of course.
  9. Enjoyable indeed, but nothing more. I found it rather "samey". Not worth a fortune.
  10. How about Lee Morgan's Live at the Lighthouse, a Blue Note 3CD-set?
  11. They're very good and both available on a single CD. I'm old enough to remember when a new India Navigation LP appearing in the shops was a big event.....those were the days. I've just had a look on Amazon and see that it goes for big bucks now. Looks like another one to put on your "I'll have when I can get it for a decent price" list, Hans. Got the CD on eBay for just under $4 plus shipping. A bit cheaper than on Amazon...
  12. Sold that Parker book for quite a bit more years ago, so this is a good deal
  13. Bought this recently for a ridiculous price and the sound quality is excellent : http://www.amazon.com/8-Classic-Albums-Three-Sounds/dp/B005SQ3B2K That's a European public-domain release. Those PD labels do not have access to original sources like mastertapes; usually existing CDs and LPs are used as sources.
  14. The Carter/Bradford is now available from ImportCDs for $13.78 plus shipping: http://www.importcds.com/music/2609714/john-carter-bobby-bradford-quartet-flight-for-four My copy just shipped.
  15. I think you mean posthumous releases
  16. I've also heard a few horror stories about Windows 8. I'm perfectly happy with Windows 7, and before that XP worked fine for me. Never used Vista.
  17. These are LPs on the Omnivore label. No idea if they're legit.
  18. This is clearly an above average hard-bop set, at least in my opinion. Get it!
  19. To my ears many of his interpretations are way over the top: overly expressive and emotional, sentimental even. Can't listen to them. To each their own I wonder if it's a cultural thing. Many Americans adore or even idolize him, but in Europe he's not that much appreciated; I've read and heard more negative than positive reactions to his work here.
  20. I second Larry's recommendation of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra's version: Amazon U.K.: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Schoenberg-Verklarte-Nacht-Chamber-Symphonies/dp/B000001GCA/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1372630812&sr=1-2&keywords=Orpheus+Schoenberg Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Schoenberg-Verkl%C3%A4rte-Nacht-Chamber-Symphonies/dp/B000001GCA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1372630916&sr=8-1&keywords=B000001GCA Simon Rattle is not my cup of tea. There are a few conductors whose work doesn't click with me, and he's one of them. Leonard Bernstein is another, and so are Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim and Michael Tilson Thomas - to name but a few
  21. Indeed. I wonder how much longer this set will be available from Mosaic. It was released in 1998...

    Hank Mobley

I like that Cobblestone one. There's some very nice unaccompanied solo stuff somewhere in there, if I remember it right. MG I haven't heard it in a long time, so I might change my mind, but IIRC 'trying too hard' to do something different was my initial reaction... Haven't heard Breakthrough! in years, but I remember not liking it all those years ago.
