  1. The Complete Billie Holiday on Verve 10CD-set is sonically one of the worst I've heard. It was mastered by Suha Gur, whose mastering work is not my cup of tea, and produced by Phil Schaap. I sold it and got the far better sounding 6CD-set The Complete Verve Master Takes instead; that one was mastered by Bob Irwin and Jayme Pieruzzi, Schaap had nothing to do with it.
  2. Yep, and PolyGram is now part of Universal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PolyGram.
  3. That's been a "who sold what to whom and when"-tale through the decades I once posted the story somewhere, but I can't seem to find it now. The Early Ellington booklet has a few lines about it. [edit] Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brunswick_Records
  4. The title of the Mosaic is The Complete 1932-1940 Brunswick, Columbia and Master Recordings of Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra, so there's your answer. The 1926-1931 Brunswick recordings are now owned by Universal, while the 1932-1940 Brunswick - and all RCA - recordings are now owned by Sony; none of the Sony-owned material is included on the European Verve (= Universal) set. I think you can safely assume that the material on the U.S. Decca (= Universal) 3CD-set Early Ellington is indeed included on that European set.
  5. Yep. Who knows what's really inside those boxes... The name Pandora comes to mind
  6. Scott just told me there's no news.
  7. I'll ask Scott about the planned Lucky Thompson set.
  8. Do you know when the set with this particular cover was released? Amazon France, Amazon U.K. and Amazon Germany seem to have it (Miles Davis en concert avec Europe 1), but unfortunately there's no picture of the cover.
  9. The asnwer can be found earlier in this thread.
  10. Another one who has left the building...
  11. Wow, €250! What's so special about this LP and the one the OP is after, other than that they were apparently non-commercial releases in limited editions?
  12. You've made your point regarding this particular thread. My post was more a general observation about a moderator's interpretations and decisions and the reactions they often evoke - or should I say provoke...
  13. It wasn't my intention to post here, being a former moderator, but a discussion in another thread prompted me to post this comment there:
  14. Please note that this is about as close to being an explicit solicitation of an unauthorized copy of a commercial product as can be tolerated. Such solicitation is against forum policy and can result in editing or deletion of posts, or even entire threads. Going forth, discretion, please. And good luck on your quest! This is exactly what the problem is here. Even though a moderator might not agree with one of the board rules (and there aren't that many compared to other boards) he's supposed to at least warn members who (threaten to) violate that rule. It can be any rule, not just the one mentioned above. If he doesn't, he can be accused of not doing his job, which happens with some regularity; if he does he'll get bashed over it, if not worse. In other words, he's damned if he doesn't and he's damned if he does. A moderator must have a thick skin here; I didn't have one. My problem, surely, but I can imagine why people are not exactly standing in line to become a moderator.

  16. Did he have any idea what happened? Was the CD damaged?
  17. I've ordered a few times from them online and it wasn't a good experience: the orders took ages and the last time they sent a wrong item; I returned it when they asked me to, and then everything went silent... Long story short, I had to move heaven and earth to get my money back. Never again.
  18. Re: The Real Thing and the upcoming Shaw Mosaic, see here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?/topic/73164-upcoming-mosaic-woody-shaw-the-complete-muse-sessions/?p=1276419
  19. Scott told me The Real Thing isn't included because Hayes was the leader of that date. The Mosaic only includes Shaw leader dates on Muse.
  20. I guess only the people at Mosaic can answer the The Real Thing question I've asked Scott about it.
  21. It'd be nice to visit DC (and also NYC) again, but unfortunately that's not going to happen in the foreseeable future. Great musea. My first priority is the renovated Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, but that's another topic
  22. As was mentioned several times on this board there'll be no more Selects. I missed that news ... bummer. I miss the Mosaic Singles series as well. I have just about all of the 32 Jazz Shaw reissues, but I'll definitely be picking up the Mosaic set. I was told the Selects were not cost-effective, on the contrary. I'll miss them too, it was a great series. At one time they were thinking about a Select with Dave Bailey's leader dates on JazzTime, JazzLine and Epic (despite the complete set on one of the Spanish/Andorran labels) and - if I remember correctly - also about a Chico Hamilton Select with his early 1960s Quintet with Gabor Szabo and Charles Lloyd.
  23. As was mentioned several times on this board there'll be no more Selects.
  24. I guess it's safe to say that the sound is better than on the Classics. I never doubted that for a moment. But how much better? I was being careful because when it comes to sound quality opinions vary and discussions about it tend to turn into heated arguments, if not fights
  25. Congratulations. Looks like a great job.
