Any idea what the shipping charge is to the US? I've gone to the site, but it won't tell me until after I give them my credit card, and I don't want to do that just yet. (I'm kind of proud of myself to have gotten that far with a language I'm unfamiliar with!) I have the Google toolbar installed and it will translate the page to english. Shipping to U.S. is 14 Euro + VAT whatever that is. There will be no VAT (value added tax, a kind of sale tax) for customers outside the European Union.

I will probably get flamed for this and I do disagree with the negative review, but I think a negative opinion as expressed on Amazon should be respected, even if it provokes outrage and anger here and might hurt sales. Trying to suppress it by snowing it under in a more or less concerted action is not the way to go in my opinion as a member here.

And Amazon may get suspicious and delete the follow-up reviews/comments. They've done that before.

Really??? Last I listened, Bags did not need John Lewis' help to become the modern master of the vibraphone. I agree. Just listen to the 1950s-1960s Savoy and Riverside recordings Jackson made away from the MJQ. I'd never want to be without the Savoy albums with Lucky Thompson, and the Riversides are favourites of mine too.

Not exactly. In addition to his unreal shotmaking skills, he was known for his coin-rattling, coughing-during-other-players'-backswings gamesmanship. He and Paul Azinger got into it on several occasions. I'm not saying that Seve was right or wrong, just that this was part of his reputation. Never knew that. Ballesteros' heyday was before I got interested in golf. Mr Azinger seems to have had a reputation too, or so I'm told. Have no idea what that was all about.

Don't get me wrong, hatWHATEVER CDs are generally of pretty high quality and I agree with Chuck that labels, especially the smaller ones, are struggling and should be supported as much as possible, but it just struck me that some people here are sometimes criticizing all those Japanese labels that keep reissuing the same stuff over and over again, but when hatWHATEVER's Mr Uehlinger is doing it it's commendable. I know, it's not quite the same, but still...

hatWHATEVER could easily have been a Japanese label, they keep recycling stuff over and over again...

We had the same madness - well, not quite on that scale - 9 years ago. Made me wish we still had a republic; we had one for over 200 years, then Napoleon came and went (on a lovely vacation on St. Helena; he loved it so much he decided not to come back this time ) and Prince William of Orange and the Vienna Congress forced a kingdom upon us, and now the majority here love it... I'm mighty curious about the Japanese issue too. If ever there was a date that needed a sonic upgrade, it's the domestic Black Lion issue of this one. If the recording itself is bad, there's not much that can be done about it.

Why do some people here prefer the earlier solo cello suites (RCA/Seon, 1970s) by Anner Bijlsma to his later set (Sony, 1992)? I've not heard either (I have the Pablo Casals, Pierre Fournier, Jaap ter Linden and Pieter Wispelwey sets), but I've read a few reviews and the majority prefer the more recent set. The earlier set was described as having a more academic interpretation and a sometimes "severe", "wooden" or even "sour" tone, while Bijlsma was said to have a better instrument, a freer interpretation and a more natural tone, and to play better on the later set.

Just in case you're including that sentence in the discography, it's "whose name", not "who's name".

Correct, the principle is the same, but the fact that it has happened before is no reason not to take a look at the ethical question.

And he's famous for his hit version of Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'", of course. It was featured in the Dustin Hoffman/Jon Voight movie Midnight Cowboy.

Re: Modest Jazz Trio - see post #205. Red Mitchell does indeed play piano on this album, Red Kelly plays bass. The Eddie Costa/Vinnie Burke is excellent.

Bijlsma's 1992 recordings were released on Sony Vivarte S2K 48047. His earlier RCA/Seon set was recorded in 1976 (not 1979 as I said earlier) and reissued on RCA RD 70950. The RCA/Seon recordings have been reissued on CD again on Seon in 2001.

Anner Bijlsma's Sony recordings are the later ones, they were made in 1992. His first set was released by RCA/Seon in 1979.
