  1. Lon, which Evans box are your talking about? Maybe the Village Vanguard box, which is spectacular in every regard (including low price). Sorry s, the "box" was really a typo, I meant issues, individual cds. I meant the recent "Waltz for Debbie." I'm buying any part of the Riverside/Milestone Evans box set that is K2 or 24 bit remastered, etc. Lon - have you compared Waltz for Debbie to the Evans Village Vanguard box (which contains Waltz for Debbie) from a few years ago? The title is "Waltz for Debby". Bill Evans dedicated the song to his niece Debby - see Peter Pettinger's Evans bio "How My Heart Sings".
  2. You'd better read the last paragraph of the post David (Ghost) linked to again, there’s no anticipated date of release yet for the Hawkins.
  3. Yes, just drop him a line and no, the prices do not include shipping - that wouldn't be practical, since shipping charges are different to different parts of the world and subject to change. Hiroshi sends out these listings to everyone on his mailing list.
  4. Thanks for posting that, David. I knew about a possible Coleman Hawkins Select with his RCA recordings from the late 1930s onwards, but I'm glad they changed their mind and are now planning a big set that will include 1920s to mid-1940s Sony and BMG-owned dates and several sessions that are now in the public domain. Good news about a big set with the Jimmie Lunceford Decca sides too, especially for those who don't have the OOP French Masters of Jazz CDs which cover the same era (and more).
  5. Well, that won't happen, there's no "they" anymore, Cook died in 2007.
  6. Amazon and Amazon Germany give the correct number of discs: 2. All four sites have the same ASIN: B000008ADB, so it's the same set. Amazon US seems to have 2 items with similar titles. The 2 disc (it says) is the one that's $22+ from various sellers. You're right. The correct ASIN of the 2CD-set is B0009YLH68. The ones I linked to on Amazon U.K. and Amazon France seem to be single CDs indeed. Sorry I messed things up. No, not with marketplace vendors, I've been burnt a few times. If they sell anything I'm interested in but not sure about, I now always ask them first.
  7. Amazon and Amazon Germany give the correct number of discs: 2. All four sites have the same ASIN: B000008ADB, so it's the same set.
  8. The ice on Antarctica is melting anyway these days... Seriously, I agree, Quebec had one of the most beautiful tones ever. Listen to him in "Deep in a Dream" on Sonny Clark's album Leapin' and Lopin'. Wonderful stuff.
  9. Seek and ye shall find: AMG Amazon Amazon Germany Amazon U.K. Amazon France
  10. NKC's 1950s and 1960s vocals with their (mostly) heavy string-laden backings are not my cup of tea, so I'll pass on these AP discs. They're too pricey for me anyway, the more so since I don't have an SACD player and don't intend to get one.
  11. The Nat King Cole is not a Blue Note, it's an Analogue Productions/Capitol SACD which is sold for $35 by the "elite" stores I mentioned in my earlier post. ImportCDs is selling it new for $22.88.
  12. I would pick the Teddy Wilson CDs with Billie on the Scottish Hep label first because of their excellent sound quality; they were mastered by the late John R.T. Davies. They cover the same era as the Columbia box, which comes in second place for me, though I don't like its sound very much; to my ears it's too harsh in places. The Verve box covers a very different era, of course, and comparing the two is comparing apples and oranges in my view.
  13. If you can find them at those prices. The "elite" stores like Analogue Productions owner Chad Kassem's Acoustic Sounds and also Elusive Disc and Music Direct are selling them at full price, $29.99 apiece.
  14. Handy's Roulette album In the Vernacular was released on CD in Japan in 1999 (TOCJ-6305). I would love to see a Select with Handy's Roulette dates, but I don't think we'll see one anytime soon. Besides, I think 3 albums would not be enough to fill a 3CD Select.
  15. According to Amazon Germany the release date is now March 15. That might also be the case in the U.K.
  16. Sorry to hear that. Amazon's Marketplace and eBay seem to be flooded with fakes of both the mono and stereo sets. The only way to get "the real thing" is to buy it directly from an established store, like Amazon (NOT their Marketplace), CDUniverse, etc. Here's one of the threads on the Hoffman forum about fake mono sets and how to recognize them.
  17. This is actually a Jim Hall date: TOCJ 50139 Modest Jazz Trio - Good Friday Blues It was recorded by Pacific Jazz on April 2, 1960, with Hall, Red Mitchell and Red Kelly. I have the 1992 Japanese CD release (TOCJ-5424), which I bought from a forum member. Recommended to those who like Hall's Pacific Jazz date Jazz Guitar.
  18. Agreed. The Saxophones of Sonny Stitt is included in the Stitt Mosaic set. It was originally released under the same title, on Roost LP 2230. The album was recorded in NYC on April 2, 1958, with Jimmy Jones (piano) and Charli[e] Persip (drums); the bassist is unknown.
  19. Yep, it was released in 1998. It's sad that one of Mosaic's better sets seems to be such a slow seller.
  20. A great set for a great price.
  21. The song is "Little Pony" and it's on the Stan Getz 3CD-box The Complete Roost Recordings. The set has three tracks with the Count Basie Orchestra, "Little Pony", "Easy Living" and "Nails", recorded live at Birdland, NYC on December 16, 1954; they're the last three on the set.
  22. But Wounded Bird is known for doing nothing! Correct.
  23. To each their own
  24. Chazzer was one of Boris Rose's bootleg labels.
