  1. I think I get him mostly I guess, it's just that he's generally not all that funny. Maybe what I like about him. He doesn't seem to care. He amuses himself and probably calls bullshit on others that are as amused. This is definitely abrasive with a mean spirit directed toward anyone that wants some. Really odd bit of television there I feel. I like a lot of Zappa's music, but his character(s) come off a little bit strong.
  2. What's the story here? I just watched the Zappa clip too.
  3. I have and enjoy SACD, but I'm not upgrading existing titles from my shelves. If I already own something on CD, LP, SACD, it is rare that I replace or duplicate with another format.
  4. Just mention Elmo Hope, Warne Marsh, Baby Face Willette and Charlie Persip. Oh, and Cal Massey. Make a joke about Booby Hancock or Herbie Handcock. You'll be fine. No need to actually listen to, and enjoy the stuff!
  5. I have honestly never received a single email like that. Is it possible that gmail blocks these?
  6. Nice! Let me know what you think. I'm always happy to turn people on to music made by friends!
  7. Received this mail today. I've had the album for quite some time, working on the packaging. Hey, for $1.99, take a listen. Trey plays guitar in Ombak, Adam Larrabee (banjo here) led a trio on el guitar last year that focused on the music from Money Jungle. There is a lot of good stuff coming out of Richmond, VA these days. Old New Things will be playing this weekend, along with Scott Clark Quartet (serialist ornette influenced quartet) and guest Harris Eisenstadt Canada Day). Hello All, Just wanted to drop you a quick line to let you know that I'm releasing a CD today from my new group Old New Things. The record is entitled "Ghosts" and I'm really excited about it. It's a jazz/folk record featuring me on acoustic guitar and pedal steel. Joining me are some of my favorite musicians: Taylor Barnett - trumpet, Adam Larrabee - banjo, Emre Kartari - drums, Cameron Ralston - bass, and JC Kuhl - saxophones and clarinets. It features a few covers from Albert Ayler and J.S. Bach as well as several of my original compositions and some amazing contributions from Taylor and Adam. Click the link below to hear and buy it if you like it. I'm offering the digital download on sale today for only $1.99!! And it's $12 for the physical CD in the mail (btw-you can donate more than the suggested price too if you want to contribute to future recordings). Thanks and feel free to forward this to any jazz fans you know!! http://oldnewthings.bandcamp.com/album/ghosts (btw - it's on iTunes too, but you should buy it from the bandcamp -Trey pollardtrey gmail
  8. Good grief.
  9. Just to say that as a 20 year old kid with an AMG book full of scrap paper and a growing list of sidemen to look out for, Mingus turned me on to Joni Mitchell.
  10. Agreed re: Wollesen. A lot of friends who play drums really love his stuff. I think this album was 1996 or 1997?
  11. I'll remember that Jim. Hopefully that 29 days is bonus time, not penalty.
  12. I met Jack today. Charlie as well. I cut myself off at a certain point. I think I could have spent $1,000 easy on jazz vinyl alone. This was a great shop. I bought a few Warne Marsh albums, Bird on Dial, Coltrane Ballads, Lester Bowie, Herbie Nichols, Gigi Gryce, Live Curtis, Basement Tapes, etc etc and passed on so many great things. I haven't looked inside the bags since the train ride. My birthday came 29 days early this year. Thanks Jack.
  13. Jack, I'll be in Boston on Friday and plan on meeting an old RI pal at your shop, then beers at Pretty Things. It has been about 7 years since I've been to the shop. Glad to see you'll be open a few months longer! Cary
  14. I personally don't give a shit and I just want to make sure as many members as possible know where I stand. Perhaps I'll start a thread if this one gets too long.
  15. I have the former. I know about the latter, but have never seen or heard it. Pretty good?
  16. I know the CDs are notoriously terrible and an illegal use of the original licensing.
  17. Funny that Emil is mentioned here. I think a lot of people associate him with Wrecking Crew. He was not a "member", correct? I have his Microtonal Blues Band impulse! lp. Haven't pulled it out in a while! May be time!
  18. Huh. This Rollins sounds really good to me. And yes, the cover art is preserved with a 1/4" white margin around the edge. The shop owner was French and told me how bad the Pathe Marconis were. Played this for me in the shop. We were all impressed.
  19. Is anyone familiar with Applause vinyl? I found a beautiful copy of Newk's Time yesterday for cheap and it sounds incredible. I'm wondering what the story is here? How many BN titles did they license? The cover is beautiful!
  20. JLH you've got me holding out for vinyl!
  21. Some good stuff on the list.
  22. So have you given ISN'T ANYTHING a spin?
