  1. I have several of these, including the Gibbs, on Japanese pressed cd's.
  2. Universal released those sets of Fantasy (now Concord) owned material that came out a couple of years ago -- Miles, Sonny, Monk. Distributorship deals probably work differently in Europe than they do here in the States. This might explain why these new sets also contain material that Universal does not own.

  4. Blaser is quite good -- sort of in a Mangelsdorff mold. Another one to check out is Hal Crook. He's part of that whole Garzone/Boston/Fringe crowd.
  5. There was some extraneous Dexter material released on Blue Note in the States a few years ago as "The Squirrel". Could this cd be an extension of that live material?
  6. Is that even likely in this day and age?
  7. You're either very naive or heavily in denial if you've believed the Penn State PR all these years. Our great nation's educational system is in a whole heep o' trouble. Why do you think that Paterno did not accept the Mara's offer to coach the Giants right around the time of the dry Bill Arnsparger years? Little comfy, cozy over there at State College, perhaps??? Personally, I'm hoping his whole legacy is wiped out.
  8. I believe that all TOCJ's are EMI owned recordings. None of the ones you mention qualify.
  9. I have long refused to have even a passing interest in college athletics because it has always been quite evident to me that the "people" running the college sports programs are a bunch of Grade A scumbags who turn loose a bunch of Grade A scumbags onto the rest of the world. From personal experience, I know that Penn State is one of the worst offenders in this area. I have called it "Middle Linebacker U" for decades.
  10. Having lived at the center of the universe for the entirety of my life, I , of course, already know about all players everywhere.
  11. Rumors of Jose Reyes interest by the Giants. Not a big bat, but he might be a good sparkplug. I'm curious to see what happens with C.J. Wilson. He did nothing to enhance his standing in the playoffs and World Series. Don't know much about Reyes, but I'll dig around for a scouting report. I think CJ, a fan favorite, will stay in Texas. Even though he didn't pick up a WS win, his last outing was superb, IMHO. Is it possible to be a baseball fan in today's world and NOT know much about Reyes??? He is only one of the most exciting players to watch in the NL. Puleasssse. For East Coasters, sure. You know anything about Nate Schierholtz or Brandon Crawford or Madison Bumgarner? They're only the most exciting newcomers to the NL in years. Pul-leeeze. First of all, Reyes is not anywhere near a newcomer. Secondly, it's not like you live in Bumfuck, Iowa. In SF, you do receive an extraordinarily high level of news exposure, no?
  12. You CAN get that many SO's by being wild. Didn't you see the All-Star game where Randy Johnson made John Kruk look rather foolish? Johnson was SO powerful AND wild at that point in his career that he scared batters into swinging at bad pitches because they were afraid of being plunked. Nolan Ryan turned into a dominant pitcher, obviously. He did so after learning how to "pitch" and not merely throw. He was on some pretty lousy teams, so his record probably does not reflect how dominant he was. Still not my idea of a "perfect" pitcher, or a real student of the art, however. Love him or hate him, that slot for me still belongs to Tom Seaver, hands down. And, btw, Mays BELONGED in NY. Always did, always will.
  13. Hey I like that one! But yeah you have to have a soft spot for commercial funk. The second album is actually better than the first. A lot of it sounds like theme music from "The Love Boat", an American TV series from the 70s.
  14. I didn't mean that they eliminated any tracks. When consolidating the two boxes into one, it looks like they were able to fit 14 cd's worth of music onto 13 cd's.
  15. Buyer beware: Listening to the Blue Mitchell 2 cd set now. It is total crap.

  17. Yeah, I'm sure that in all those years of being a fan Paul never saw Ryan pitch. (The name of that emoticon is "rolls eyes" btw, it's not just a smile.) So anyway, Ryan easily could have won 2 Cy Youngs. In the '81 strike year he led the league with a sub-2 ERA and as usual strikeouts. He also went 11-5 (just 110 games that year.) But that was the year of Fernandomania. 1987 is the poster year for showing how wins for pitchers can be a dubious stat. At the age of 40 he again led the league in Ks & ERA but went 8-16. The Astros just didn't score for him at all. He had one game where he allowed no earned runs thru 8 and lost. Many games where he gave up 1 run and lost. His '87 game log. It's not for the squeamish. (As an aside how on earth did Bob Gibson lose 9 games in 1968 when he had an ERA of 1.12? See for yourself. Some are deserved, but one includes giving up 1 run in the 10th for a 1-0 loss!) That said I do think that Nolan is overrated, or at least if I was going to pick a staff just in my lifetime (beginning in the early '60s) I doubt he'd be on it even if I chopped it into leagues. And I like him, the folklore about him and loved watching him pitch. He was too wild in his Angel years walking 5 to 6 per game. Sure, he also only gave up 6 hits per game, but imagine having to field behind that as he's also striking out 10-11. That's a lot of time staring into your glove and making sure your shoes are tied. He did become a pitcher rather than a thrower once he reached his 30s and that's admirable. But the high leg kick made him easy to run on, he didn't field the position well and he was a terrible hitter. (Somehow I managed to see him hit one of his home runs.) Those later complaints might be like complaining about a weird mole on a goddess but the holding runners & fielding problems may help explain a wee bit of the difference between Carlton & Ryan's careers, as Cartlon was good at all 3 of the little things mentioned. I don't know. When I was a young child watching Ryan "pitch" for the Mets, his typical line read: 7 IHP, 9 K, 10 BB. Very frustrating that he could never harness his power while in NY. Wasn't unhappy to see him go. Getting that wonderful player Jim Fregosi for him caused an entirely 'nother level of frustration in my Mets fandom, though.
  18. The one I can see on Amazon has 13 discs They combined the 2 previous boxes totalling 14 discs and somehow eliminated 1 disc in the process! See Brownie's United Archive link above.
  19. There are 2 Miles boxes on this label. One has 10 discs and the other has 4. They became pretty difficult to find once the ESTATE caught on.
  20. It still seems to me that YOU are trying too hard to invent a language all your own.
  21. I actually felt the opposite, especially since the Giants won it all last year and took themselves off the dreaded list... and Texas was the team they beat... and because it seemed obvious (several times) that Texas was going to win that game. Which dreaded list would that be? They won a World Series in NY with the Say Hey kid. Same franchise, different city.
  22. Easy for me to decide to buy this since I only have a few of the albums already. The sound on this is exceptional although I haven't A/B'ed. The package is up to the usual Hip-O standards. Definitely a worthy purchase for me, or for anyone who doesn't already have most of this.

Nobody said it was OK to buy this stuff. If you think jazz hasn't been dead for years already, think again! As a matter of fact, music in general may be dead. Just take a turn around the FM dial in your native NYC.

Ooh! Ooh! I hope it's me. I hope it's me. If you've lurked or posted around here long enough, you'd be sure of who I was talking about. Aw crap! I never win anything. With a little effort, I'm positive you too can attain "dick" status.
