    Frank Sinatra

A very happy birthday to the Chairman of the Board who would have turned 89 today. Celebrating his birthday with: Live at the Sands A Swingin' Affair September of My Years Francis A. & Edward K.
  4. I recently saw "Ray" and I'm really getting into his music. I used to think of Ray Charles as an old country/western singer who sang "Georgia on My Mind" but now I realize that he's done so much more. In just the last week I bought four of his Atlantic CDs: - The Genius of RC - Hallelujah, I Love Her So! - The Great RC - Genius Hits the Road. Next on my list are: Genius Hits the Road and Modern CandW Album. Has there been or will there be a reissue of his Greatest Hits albums originally issued on ABC/Paramount. Looking to get "Hit the Road Jack" and "Unchain My Heart" on disc without having to buy the "Ray" soundtrack. HopefullyMCA/Universal will issue th Greatest Hits albums on CD soon.
  5. Will pick this one up when it comes out on CD. Let's hope someone (Wounded Bird, Atlantic WEA-UK or Collectables) will reissue Clickin' With Clax and Martians Stay Home on CD to complete what was once available years ago on the Shorty Rogers Mosaic set. By the time I heard about Mosaic in the mid-1990s, that set was out of print.
  6. I have a copy of this CD I'd be willing to trade for one of the following CDs: James Moody - Return From Overbrook (GRP-Chess) Peter Nero - Plays Duke Ellington (Concord) Emily Remler - Take Two (Concord) Ramsey Lewis - Consider the Source (GRP-Chess) Thanks for looking.
  7. I just found out that CBS-Masterworks ("Sony Classical") is issuing new titles on their "Great Performances" imprint label which seemed dormant for the past fifteen to twenty years. Wow, let there be more great Columbia/Epic/Sony reissues on the way!! I just ordered the Grieg/Schumann Piano Concertos from Tower.com with Leon Fleisher and the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by George Szell. An amazing record from the late 1950s which is finally seeing the light of day on compact disc. I had this recording on Columbia's "Epic" imprint label until I wore it down years ago - now it's finally on compact disc! The Fleisher/Szell recording is one of the finest of the Grieg and Schumann concertos IMHO. Grab this disc - you won't go wrong! Hopefully the return of the "Great Performances" imprint will result in the reissue of more Fleisher recordings as well as other Columbia Masterworks/ Epic recordings that have not been issued on compact disc.
  8. Looking for a clean/mint copy of Ramsey Lewis - Consider the Source on CD. Anyone looking to sell a copy or has a lead (other than eBay, amazon, etc) as to where I can get it, please PM. Thanks.
  9. Four CDs worth of Bill Evans at the Village Vanguard - nice! Is this all the material Evans recorded at the Vanguard on August 17th and 18th?
  10. Check out "Blue in Green" on Milestone recorded in Canada in 1974. One of his best from the later years.
  11. I think the Brubeck Newport 1958 set had a "fake" audience as did the Bud Powell - Portrait of Thelonious LP. As for the Powell set, the "fake" audience remains in the Sony/France CD issue but was edited out on the US compact disc release.
  12. Blue Train My Favorite Things A Love Supreme Happy 78th B'day, Dear John C.

    Joe Cohn

I just heard this brilliant, smooth and swinging NYC based guitarist for the first time at La Belle Epoque in Greenwich Village with Judi Marie Canterino, vocalist and wife of Mike Canterino who owned the legendary Half Note club in New York from the mid 1950s through the mid 1970s. Joe, the son of of Al Cohn, plays every Monday night from 8 to 11 p.m with Harry Allen, Joel Forbes, and Chuck Riggs at Zuni located near the northeast corner of 43rd Street and 9th Avenue in Manhattan. Great music in a laid back atmosphere - New York's best kept jazz secret IMHO. They've recorded a CD which is for sale at the club which is definately worth getting. As for Joe on other CDs, grab his 1997 release on Doubletime Records with fellow guitarist Doug Raney entitled "Two Funky People". He can also be heard on Buddy DeFranco's "Mr. Lucky" and "Chip Off the Old Bop" as well as Al Cohn's "Overtones". An amazing musician worth exploring. I can't get enough of him - Check him out. Many thanks to Judi Marie for bringing Joe Cohn to my attention. Bob
  14. WOW - My prayers have been answered! Collectables will be issuing "The Swinging Mr. Rogers" on November 9th which is up and available for "pre-order" on their webpage. Less than eight weeks away!!
  15. Just ordered "From the Mars Hotel' on gdstore.com. Thanks for the info. The "Ace" album looks good too (Mexicali Blues, etal) - it's coming out on CD at the end of October.
  16. I recently saw my first "Dead" show this summer and I like their folk-rock material. Friends with whom I went to the show recommended that I get the following three CDs: - American Beauty - Workingman's Dead - From the Mars Hotel I already bought the first two but can't seem to find the Mars Hotel CD. Any leads other than ebay or half.com as to where I can get this CD would be greatly appreciated. I'd also be willing to trade something for this disc. Items I have for trade: Grachan Moncur III - Some Other Stuff (U.S. Conn.); Red Garland - Auf Wiedersehen (MPS Japan); Hank Mobley Quintet (Blue Note TOCJ 1550); J.R. Monterose - Straight Ahead (DIW Japan: 1986 reissue of Xanadu release - purchased used w/o obi/ insert). Thanks.
  17. Just ordered it on CD Universe for $8.39 - still cheaper than the $11.98 list even after postage. Hopefully I'll have it by the weekend.
  18. Has anybody heard of this record label? I was looking for a CD that was issued in the US on United Artists/EMI and saw that the CD was issued on "Disky". Are they legitimate (properly licensed), good sounding CD issues? Thanks.
  19. Have any of these broadcasts been made commercially available or are there any plans to release them in the future. Apparantly the tapes of these broadcasts have been donated to the UNLV music library for the use by jazz scholars and "the public". Among the broadcastss I recorded on cassette are: Houston Person and Etta Jones, Scott Hamilton, Lanny Morgan Quintet, Carl Fontana and Bill Watrous, Phil Woods Quintet with Tom Harrell.
  20. The tapes I have are cassettes. Looking at my stereo, my CD recorder is connected to my amplifier (NAD). My turntable is connected to the amplifier through a "pre-amp" box. My cassette deck is likewise directly connected to my amplifier. I must confess that I know almost nothing about setting up audio equipment.
  21. I bought a Marantz CD Recorder ("burner") component in 2002 which has enabled me to transfer my LP records onto CD but I cannot seem to record audio tapes on CD. I have a few radio broadcasts on tape that I'd like to transfer onto CD. Can this be done? If so, what do I need to do or buy? Thanks.
  22. You may want to check with Stereo Jack's in Cambridge, Mass. He/they had a couple of copies when I was last up there in early August. Good luck.
  23. Thanks for the recommendations. Just bought: September of My Years Strangers in the Night Reprise Very Good Years Songs for Swinging Lovers. Looking forward to hearing more from the Chairman...
  24. I'm a real Frank Sinatra novice who's just bought the Francis Albert Sinatra/Antonio Carlos Jobim CD. It's my first Sinatra disc and I'm getting hooked. Any recommendations for classic Sinatra CDs which include Summer Wind, Strangers in the Night... I'm looking for a compilation or straight issue on CD that contains all or most of the tunes fans associate with Sinatra without having to spend a fortune on a box set. Thanks. Bob
  25. Emailed you regarding six of the CDs. Bob
