The Euro version of the Jamal might make more economic sense, if and when it comes. [wrong] I wish they had included the solo session for Argo (the hype in the brochure states incorrectly that ALL Jamal sessions for Argo are included) [/all wrong, see below] and [still true] I could care less about the string session and quintet side.[/still very true] Has anyone worked out the running order, which in some cases seems to be LP order plus others, elsewhere just actual recording order - ? I'd also like to know which tracks actually were mastered from original tapes if any. The usually forthcoming discographical notes are a bit reticent.

Did you publish this yet? Most of what he says is quite easy to understand, which is what makes it so boring that wide-eyed hacks and hangers-on just replicate the vocabulary without explaining it. It will be good to have a clear-eyed view for a change. By the way I think there is a difference between the music being difficult to follow (it isn't) and difficult to like (that can vary).

New? 4CD Anthony Braxton set Old Dogs
David Ayers replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Only two new Braxton boxes this week. Hard times indeed. I'll look forward to hearing the final box of standards with Kevin O'Neil, though I'll be going the download route. Edited to add - I mean *three* AB box sets this week - see the AB thread. In answer to tranemonk's question: I make some suggestions in the AB thread about a measured approach to sampling his music which is not based on box set collection fever. I'd say you probably don't want to start with 4 CDs of duos with drums, and that the Mosaic is costly, given that some of the material is for completists only. There again, if box sets are what do it for you... -
The completist's nightmare continues. Or the obsessive's dream!

Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets
David Ayers replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
so "bimestrale" means every two months, i.e., they are behind schedule already... of the mentioned artists (Lacy, Lewis, Dixon, Taylor, Roach, Russell, Motian, Moye) three are in the next batch apparently (Taylor, Russell, Motian) which seems to imply that the list is old but pretty accurate (david ayres, where did you get the info re braxton, taylor, douglas you posted above?) so it looks as if Dixon, Lacy and Roach are on the horizon...! wonder what a Don Moye Set would include... Yes I *did* see that list somewhere - I'll try to check just where - I think you can assume the sets I listed will come out... I'll get back to you Edited to add: I think I probably saw this page http://www.camoriginalsoundtracks.com/site/index.php?site=&path=cd_press&idcd=1552 -

Black Saint/Soul Note Box Sets
David Ayers replied to romualdo's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I am excited about the Russell. I have some of these on vinyl. True I've got mixed feelings about them, but I think the set will be an excellent opportunity to think about Russell again. It will be a good price, I expect, and I am looking forward to it. -
Did Mosaic make a blunder....
David Ayers replied to John Tapscott's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Do you have to return it? My understanding of UK consumer law (yours obviously might be different) is that there is no obligation to actively return unsolicited goods, you are just supposed to make them available for collection. Remember there's a (time and money) cost on you to go to the Post Office. The cost of leaving them on the porch is a little lower. Also, the actual physical items cost little to manufacture (maybe not much more than $1 per CD all in) so the actual physical return is not so important to the sender. Of course if you are in Belgium and you forked out for customs on stuff you didn't want that's another matter. And finally, they wouldn't even take your call so you hardly owe them any effort on your own part. -
Yeah it says it for a few that have been in print and/or still are in print in the US (e.g. Conference of the Birds). So I think it is just a re-pressing, unless these are on the way back in some other format (budget or deluxe) - we'll see.

Sam Rivers Mosaic this November
David Ayers replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Gosh - I don't really agree. I find that session incredibly reined in, like others of those where the artist struggles to match the ECM model. I had the LP and sold it, so go figure. Its non-reissue seems hard to explain, though: it must be about the highest-profile straight ECM title never to have had a CD issue, even in Japan. Maybe the producer doesn't want to reissue it? -
Um, as well as some BN titles at £3 each, which we've already mentioned, there's quite a few Quadromania titles at Fopp currently, starting with Shorty Rogers. £3 per 4 CD set. Don't ask me which others I can't remember.

How do you guys even know it's his birthday? It might be mine too for all you know. In fact it is - so happy birthday to Chuck... and to me too!

Sam Rivers Mosaic this November
David Ayers replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
What 'needle-drop' music are you referring to here? The originally released tracks on the solo Select. But weren't the masters unavailable? All I was saying is that I am not in the market for LPs I already own, especially from a needledrop. I shouldn't have mentioned that gripe of mine since it isn't at this point relevant to the Rivers set. -

Sam Rivers Mosaic this November
David Ayers replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I know Mosaic is in some sort of financial crisis right now but have they given us any reason to believe that what they pick to release is not based on it being what they believe is really good jazz and not by how well it will sell or (since it is a limited edition) how fast it will sell? Well! You could argue that the Braxton set was designed NOT to sell since it included material that is of no more than curiosity value which bumped up the price. So in that sense we might assume that the Rivers will be relatively uncompromised. That said, the thing you can see Mosaic doing now is aiming for 7CD set as their optimum price point, so you have to hope they don't include mediocre material or just more of the same to bulk up the set. These things find their own level though. Whatever happens it won't be 'Sam Rivers plays Kenny G'. If they include already-issued material I'll ignore it, personally, and especially if they use a needledrop as they did for the Andrew Hill, which was a poor show IMO. I'm hoping for the best. -

How Would You Describe Your Music Collecting
David Ayers replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Why you would think that. Some bring high value in the aftermarket. Like I say, a few keep their value or even appreciate a little, but I think many are worth little, especially where there is a newer version. I should think that the overall value of most collections has dropped significantly, especially bearing in mind that selling has costs which would eat away further at the value. -

Well I'm assumerating that you're joking about that! Collectable LPs will retain value, I believe, but with very few exceptions CDs are almost worthless. Uh - I guess I'm not sure what the 'crazy' face means so I'm not sure what you meant... -

Given the choice between a Mosaic and lunch at the Maze I'd go for the latter. In fact I recently was given exactly that choice and that's exactly what I did. Uh, I'm sure your cafe is nice too. Are you sure you are qualified to even read this board - let alone contribute? Heh heh. See you on the 'what haute cuisine are you eating right now' thread, matey! And I'll be putting my Mosaics on ebay to pay for all the gourmandise [sp?] -- ! -
