  1. Why not just go whole hog and do complete sets a la Black Saint/Soul Note? Blakey, Mobley, Morgan, McLean, Smith & Green might be unfeasible, but they're 1 Joe Henderson album away from all of them.
  2. For this reason and most importantly because I think it is a good album rather than a great one I would say skip Insights. Stacked against the individual musical visions of Dixon, Hemphill, Fischer, Carter-Bradford and Tapscott, and the divinely inspired playing of Denny Zeitlin and Russell Thorne, it simply doesn't match up for me.
  3. I have been a member for some years, but the service is basically dead now and was mostly worthless in the past. I have received some mixed product from them. I ordered a bunch of RVGs once that were the real deal. Other CDs, not so much. I got some Miles Davis remasters that had pretty poor printing on the booklets. The discs were standard redbook, but with a JHS logo. Ditto some Savoy remasters and old Columbia Benny Goodmans-- actually terrible printing on these, but real discs with JHS logos on them. They also used to traffic in these abominations:
  4. I also love the music on this set, but it is of course available on CD if you ever want to try again.
  5. I have Extension on the way. Excited to see it and hear it.
  6. Yeah, that's why I shop jazz there-- almost always works in your favor save odd exceptions like this. They once sold a Hardee/Quebec LP Mosaic for $20, the Don Pullen Select for $30 ... That $99 Manone/Prima is also a steal. They also never know to price OOP mass market jazz CDs higher than usual so it can be a great place for stuff like that, too. I got the Complete Armstrong RCA set for $12 there. Their price for a USED Bird Benedetti set is preposterous at $275. The set will be in print as long as Mosaic exists. Someone there obviously doesn't know their shit.
  7. There is a Johnny Smith Mosaic DISCS ONLY at reckless.com for $40. Also some complete sets at good prices. Search 'mosaic'
  8. Can you just post the list here so I can 'ooh' and 'ahh'?
  9. I would pay $10 for something like this, but certainly no more.
  10. This is just the stuff from the first Mosaic Select right?
  11. Anybody have a source for this?
  12. If you've not seen this, I couldn't recommend it more. It contains the footage posted above. Interviews with all surviving members + John Simon Elliot Landy, Clapton, Harrison, performances, insights ... the gamut. Watching Robertson, Helm & Simon play back the master tape will make you drool.
  13. As was mentioned elsewhere, there will also be an old FMP Brotzmann/Bennik/Van Hove 7" reissued.
  14. Aside from the Monk and a couple other things the label strikes me as one that holds a lot of good music but little great music.
  15. You know I'm sure it's a mixed bag. I can see it in some cases better than others. But for example it was definitely brilliant and rather unconventional to open SOUL STATION with "Remember".
  16. Anyone know if Einheitsfrontlied was actually released today?
  17. Definitely right about new music, but don't be so very sure about the hard boppers et al. Mulligan is famously quoted as saying he was peeved about "Complete Recordings" sets that played in session order; he said they worked hard to scructure the songs on their records a certain way. Differently for sure than Intents & Purposes but still.
  18. I think his work in the Krupa trio is killer.
  19. Looks like some easy listening there.
  20. Listening to the Tentet LP for the first time in awhile and it really is just so modern. If you came in at the right time you could easily mistake it for something like Muhal Richard Abrahms. But then it also just hits that perfect 50s jazz note too. A real treasure.
  21. Sad indeed. I just love those early recordings with Raney and Overton. They sound like they were recorded in a bedroom. There's really nothing else like them. Not to mention the great Tentet.
  22. Tremendously sad. The Band's music has had a tremendous impact on my life. Peace, Levon.
  23. I think he's referring to The Dark Tree. If so, yes get it. It comes with a great CD and is about $3 on Amazon. I haven't yet read Song of the Unsung.
  24. I'm guessing the answer is "No" but do you think it would be feasible to release all three Flying Dutchmans at the same time? People might be more inclined to buy them all in one go. I'm thinking of the old RVG days, stopping by the record shop to grab all four on release day.
  25. Frankly-- and I say this as a major Braxophile-- the Mosaic is not essential. While taking the work as a whole works on the level of "look what he managed to do with major label bucks in just 7 years", I think taking the albums on their own is more representative of Braxton's vision. Not to mention there's equally vital work from this period on Moers, Hat Hut, Leo, Black Saint, Muse & Freedom. The LPs have decent sonics, are easy to find, have great covers, and, above all else, contain exhaustive notes. While it's not Mosaic's policy to include liner notes in their sets, I think the lack here borders on insulting. While I'm fine not having Ira Gitler's 500th bland rundown on a Lee Morgan date reprinted yet again, Anthony goes into strenuous detail explaining his musical systems on these albums and to have the music without this goes explicitly against Braxton's intent. Mike Heffley's notes in the Mosaic are fine but hardly relevatory. Lastly, the way the music is divided is slightly confusing and breaks up some of the records. I don't mean to complain overmuch. I'm thrilled Mosaic put this out and I'm glad I bought it. But for the purposes of answering your question, this is what I think.
