This AM: Gerry Mulligan Quartet - What Is There To Say? (Columbia six-eye stereo)
-
Personally I like the cover. I need to order this. I'm curious to hear how this music is approached. Topology is incredibly dense ensemble music, but the approach on Old Eyes & Mysteries, Oleo, Linear B revolves around small groupings. The material is so rich and enigmatic ... so there's a lot of potential here.

The Columbia Jazz Piano Mood Sessions (Mosaic 7-CD set)
colinmce replied to Bol's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
If you don't know the Ahmad Jamal material from the standalone disc on Legacy, you're really in for something. -
Warne Marsh - Warne Out (Interplay) A trio with Jim Hugart (b) & Nick Ceroli (d). "Lennie's Pennies" sounds like Braxton's Seven Compositions (Trio) 1989

I was unaware too, thanks. (Ditto regarding the reordering). I've always considered reinforcing the ECM with the LPs, but now I'm certain I must!

Yes, it IS a shame. This Dootone plus the three/four on Contemporary make a very nice selection of hard, West-Coast jazz. I seem to recall that all the music on these albums was released by one of the Andorran labels a while back..was it Gambit? That's probably why all the "proper" releases have gone OOP Yes, it wasGambit, but I doubt that would be enough to drive them out of print on Contemporary. More likely the Concord bean counters saw there was insufficient sales history. Yeah, most likely. Mosaic was considering a Select, too bad that never came to pass. As a disappointing addendum, the OOP CDs are very pricy to boot.

This means Counce now has 1 title currently in print. A shame.

Or you could wait until it's reissued in Andorra next year...

There's a copy of the original Ghosts on Japanese CD for $38.99 on Amazon. The Freedom Vibrations CD is $31.02. That's about what you're looking at. I've never really seen CD versions much cheaper. And so I just have the Arista LP which put me out a dollar.

I'm surprised a label like Water never got around to that one. Was it just a bit early for the recent Japanese 70s BN series?

Just Getting Started: Best Places to Buy Vinyl
colinmce replied to Face of the Bass's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
The only Horos I've heard are the two Ran Blake and the sound is not too hot, which is unsurprising given the flimsiness of the vinyl. I've never heard great things. -
And yet it doesn't quite come off. I find it among the least compelling Blakey albums up to 1964. Whereas FFA is one of the best.

I have no horse in this race but goddamn, 120 euro??

Good call, lots of impressive ECM titles from the 70s. Poor Phillip Wilson. What a damn shame so much of his work is so deeply OOP. CvsD said they were reissuing the Hat Hut LP so I hope they keep their word. -

Two of my favorite labels that fall into this category are Hat Hut and Moers. Now, the former obviously has a huge presence on CD, but a great deal of the early releases have never appeared on CD: Phillip Wilson, Baikida Carroll, some Joe McPhee, Alan Silva, Jerome Cooper, ROVA, Irene Schweizer, Jimmy Lyons, Daunik Lazro, Davd S Ware, George Sams, Raymond Boni, some Steve Lacy, and on and on. As for Moers, they reissued a few things on CD which are very hard to find. But LPs include work by John Carter, Fred Anderson, Anthony Braxton, Barry Altschul, Phillip Wilson, Leo Smith (Orchestra & Trio), Roscoe Mitchell, John Surman, Evan Parker-Paul Lytton, Music Revelation Ensemble, Joseph Bowie, Ray Anderson, Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and others. -

There's one on eBay for $300... In my experience, DG can't be beat, but discogs comes a close second. In the end, though, OOP avant jazz vinyl is what it is and totally depends on the record(s) you want. Amazon & eBay can surprise but you have to be diligent. I've missed out on not one but TWO copies of Jimmy Lyons - Push/Pull priced at $30 Buy-it-Now on eBay. Though contrary to results from mass sell offs there, auctions are usually MUCH more sane than BIN listings for more run of the mill stuff (Hat, Black Saint, Freedom, Nessa, et al) -
Nice - not an easy score. Also not an easy one to find - excellent. Yep, good John Carter on there.
-
Yeah, I was gonna say, the one I got was a later pressing with a beat jacket (clean vinyl, though). Your copy looks pretty crisp. And it's a splendid recording, of course.

I've never found Blue Potato to be a stretch. I got mine for about $8. Just a matter of it showing up. I've been pretty focused on my complete Ran Blake collection lately and have most of the rarer/pricier ones out of the way (the two Horos, the ESP, Blue Potato). I'm about to go to the mats on both volumes of Painted Rhythms. The private press Take 1 & Take 2 LPs are the real tough cookies. As far as the whole shebang of 40ish titles, I'm a bit over half way.

Jim, I got a copy of the Blake for $11 on eBay last week.

LF: Dunmall & Hauser hatOLOGY titles
colinmce replied to colinmce's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Just scored the Dunmall on eBay for $13. Thanks all for the tips. Still on the hunt for No Try. I've only ever seen it for sale once... -
I've been particularly stuck on the Mysteries section: 4 tracks from 1990 with Urs Leimgruber & Fritz Hauser. Beautiful stuff. There's so much variation in that music, all kinds of groupings and styles spanning 1979-1990 with so many incredible players. I'm interested to hear these songs which are so engrained in my mind played by others.

I've been waiting for that one, I knew it had been recorded. I have been spinning the Po discs lately, actually. Never ceases to amaze.
