Currently reading Saxophone Trailblazer (Gary Carner - State Uni of NY 2023) & am enjoying immensely (of course I'm a Pepper Adams afficonado) Like the recent Threadgill tome this Carner book is not chronological (do like that format) He had a close relationship with the Ellington Orchestra - Harry Carney accompanied him when he purchased his first Selmer sax Rex Stewart was a major mentor & father figure & he was also very close to Thad Jones. if that's the case (as I mentioned above) then there are two versions of 6/8(Jungla) on the EP - the total EP (6 sides) time is longer than the LP

The original Afro-Cuban Suite released by Machito's Orchestra (Composed/conducted by Chico O'Farrill) was released on a Mercury 10" (505) & ran for approximately 17 mins (fits with the full track from the Charlie Parker Verve box set plus the reissue Verve LP I both have) Cancion, Mambo, 6/8, Jazz, Rhumba Abierta (Machito 10") =? Manteca Theme, Contraste, Jungla, Rhumba Finale (Gillespie's Afro) The Gillespie Afro version runs for a similar amount of time (just under 17 mins) - I presume 6/8 was part of this but not listed on the LP. I don't think 6/8 was extra material

I've just noticed that Afro (Norgran 1003 - later released in 56 as Manteca on Verve 8208) was also originally released as a 3EP (7")(EP N-2002-3) set. It appears to have an extra track titled "6/8" that looks like it's never been released anywhere else AFAIK - LP or CD. Some discographies list it as unreleased & other list it as part of the original LP. Anyone out there with a copy of the triple EP set? just found this wonderful rendition of "In A Sentimental Mood" by Joe Harriott with The Stan Tracey Big Brass (1969) - is this the same version from the Columbia LP "We Love You Madly"? - sounds like it. Even though it's less "Jazz Rock" I'm partial to the very early Softs (proto Gong) Daevid Allen/Kevin Ayers/Robert Wyatt +/- Ratledge & Hopper - much more anarchic & lyric laden - most reissues (primarily live concerts) appear to revolve around the early to mid 70s

Excellent analysis with the vast majority of this material now on CD/digital media Wonder if Cook & Morton used this as a primary reference source for their ratings especially the crowns/5 stars

Just saw this post - I can't believe it, first Tony Oxley & now Martin Davidson - I communicated with Martin over the years re UK jazz & his emanem (not the rap artist!!) releases. He even lived here in Australia for a few years in the 80s. You'll be missed so much!! RIP Martin
