  1. Head up that "I cant' believe it's still here" with the Gato Barbieri Third World and Phenix albums. Those are great! totally agree!! - Flying Dutchman material Would have snapped them up but already have em - only looking for El Pampero (live Montreux '71) Sorry to tell you that El Pampero is the best one of all, best thing he ever did! Today was an example of the benefit of maintaining a good relationship with the owner of my local independent brick and mortar retailer. I got a call from him this afternoon that someone getting rid of their collection had just brought in over 400 CDs and he thought I might be interested in taking a look through it. In addition to about 30 other discs I picked up, I got a copy of El Pampero in mint condition for $6.

    Vocalion

No kidding - that one is brilliant ! The Kirchin Band was a medium sized group with his Dad, Ivor. Sort of covered Ted Heath-ish showband territory but with some very good jazz soloists. Thanks for the heads up with the sale - I'm surprised I didn't get an email (buy from Dutton a couple of times a year) Went for the Garricks (Apocalypse & Troppo), Ray Russell, Thad Jones & Kirchins The Thad Jones double is interesting - was originally released on Period (other half of LP was Sonny Rollins) & Prestige (wasn't technically a TJ LP - has been released as an OJC) - did Vocalion lease these sessions? I'm interested to hear the Kirchin Big Band material - have all the Trunk CD's (big fan of Basil's) - wish his only officially released LP (WORLDS WITHIN WORLDS) on Columbia could garner a release
  3. pm sent on Bouncing with Bud: All the Recordings of Bud Powell by Carl Smith (softcover). $5. Rat Race Blues by Noal Cohen and Michael Fitzgerald (softcover). $5. Dance of the Infidels by Francis Paudras (softcover). $5.
  4. Anyone have more details on the new triple LP, THE MYSTERY OF BEING (non CD) KLIMT release of two of Sun Ra's Horo double Lp's ie New Steps & Other Voices.. KLIMT apppears to be associated with the Italian Abraxas label, I presume a pirate operation? (Italian equivalent to the Fresh Sound stable of labels) This has got to be a bootleg - different title & cover art work Actually, has there been any further news re the proposed legit Horo releases
  5. thanks for the tip scored the 4CD debut set for $6.39 (with the discount) & no shipping to Australia What's the story with this operation - is all of their material second hand or is some of it "cut outs"/remaindered stock ie new (some of the jazz box sets, Prestige RVG remasters, Keepneews remasters?) I think I've seen previous discussions mentioning this
  6. Maybe I should buy some of these more recent Vee Jays & check them out for myself Even if they happen to be of Spanish origin the sound quality should be still good There was a mention that the Koch issues from 2000 may have been taken from vinyl (but these CD's also included the alternate takes!!). Can anyone else confirm that? The caveat in the Mosaic box mentions that certain labels were not to be listed due to their dubious origins - don't think it was referring to Koch - this was an above board label.
  7. So it appears that Fresh Sound/Absolute Distribution has licenced the Vee Jay material
  8. Are the currently circulating Vee Jay CD's from a legitimate source? In the US, Koch legitimately released many of them around 2000 but ones (non Japanese)listed from the mid 2000's (esp UK & Europe)appear to have the Vee Jay label. When you go to the Fresh Sound site (Absolute Distribution)they actually have the Vee Jay label as a separate category. Are these the same thing & is the Fresh sound site selling these as genuine/non bootlegged releases (as they have been advertising Mosaic sets etc)or are they up to their usual tricks. I have a Wayne Shorter Vee Jay CD but in the finer print, Blue Moon is mentioned confirming a Spanish con job. Bit confused here?? Can anyone shed some light on this. Of particular interest is the Lee Morgan double "Here's Lee Morgan".
  9. scored the gambrell/Hamilton trio TOCJ CD - has been on my wants list thanks Received the CD today Lovely condition all over (disc, case & slick) Thanks
  10. pm sent on 6 Pharoah Sanders Tauhid (Impulse)
  11. Wonder what 5 titles will be included? Don't suppose "Cosmic Music" or "Expression" will make it There is no mention on the Hip O Select site yet
  12. Head up that "I cant' believe it's still here" with the Gato Barbieri Third World and Phenix albums. Those are great! totally agree!! - Flying Dutchman material Would have snapped them up but already have em - only looking for El Pampero (live Montreux '71)
  13. scored the gambrell/Hamilton trio TOCJ CD - has been on my wants list thanks
  14. Wolfgang's Vault have just released The Booker Ervin Quartet (Chick Corea / Reggie Johnson / Lenny(ie) McBrowne) live at Newport 1967 as a download (MP3's or FLAC's) Great sound quality - VOA recording? Don't think that this has ever been released (LP or CD) - maybe been circulating amongst BE aficionados on tape? I wasn't aware that Booker had ever played with Chick
  15. pm on 4 Duke Ellington and Ray Brown This One's for Blanton (OJC) 5 Side By Side by Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges (Verve) 7 Joe Henderson and Wynton Kelly Trio Four (Verve)
  16. Thanks I thought as much I find errors in the Lord discography almost on a daily basis! but I still wholeheartedly support it (purchase a new update every few years)
  17. I'm wondering if this various artists LP (Deb 198/OJC 115) has ever been commercially/legitimately digitalised. Of particular interest is the Roach/Mobley session of April 10, 1953. An alternate take of "Orientation" was released on this anthology LP. The Lord Discography states that there was a CD release of this (OJC CD 115-2) I have a 1996 Fantasy catalogue that only lists the LP version (OJC 115). I've done a search on amazon & ebay with no success (only LP's show up - Debut & OJC versions) The Debut Story 4CD set contains "Orientation" - again the Lord discography lists the non alternate take here - can anyone confirm that? The standard version on the Roach CD is 2:50 in length BTW is it worth getting the Debut Story if you already have the Mingus Debut box? Is there much material in the 4 CD set not in the big box.

  20. Amazon UK is currently selling the Lacy & Konitz Soul Note box sets for £15.99 for those overseas once VAT is removed that takes it down to just under £13 Great bargain for those in Australia/NZ as shipping is free so these sets are currently costing just under 20 Australian $'s I used to pay way over that (Aus$22-30) for a single SN/BS CD How times have changed
  21. you're in for a pleasant surprise - it's a 10 CD set by Transparency (the final disc is a 1968 Pacifica radio interview)
  22. What a bargain!!! snap it up - the cream of Keynote IMHO (with respect to Lester Young & Lennie Tristano)
  23. I've just obtained this 21LP set (including the 2 booklets & 7" single) Unfortunately the larger discography booklet is missing the last page (#39) - was there any more info here Page 38 ends with a list of the Keynote albums (up to K-149) - anything beyond this?
