  1. Just downloaded the latest jazz offering from Wolfgang's Vault Johnny Coles/George Coleman Quintet at Newport 65 (35 mins) - the extra treat is Toshiko Akiyoshi on ivories They do a great version of Little Johnny C (actually promote JC's new BN LP at the start of the concert)
  2. That's what I was leaning toward (contains contributions by Sonny Criss & Willie Smith) Also a big for The MJQ set - sound quality is superb
  3. I can remember a copy of the Lalo Schifrin CD sitting in a shop (primarily Rock/Punk/Alternative) for 5-6 years here in Brisbane; I think it was still part of the stock when the shop eventually shut down (never sold). Don't think it was frequented by Jazz afficonados that often.
  4. Gonna go for the Cohn/Newman select plus one of the following Buddy Rich (running low) or Louis Armstrong or Benny Goodman or Oliver Nelson (this looks a bit piecemeal) any words of wisdom from the board?
  5. Burt Covers Bud (Bud Powell) Cover to Cover (Vandermark 5) Cover (Henry Threadgill) Run for Cover (Bob Marley) No Cover, No Minimum (Bill Evans) next up: SENTIMENTAL
  6. Indeed - that is what Jim is wading his way through
  7. Hang Tough (Joe Pass) Let It All Hang Out (The Hombres) Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (Stanley Turrentine) Hangover Triangle (Herbie Nichols) Hang Jean Lee (Ed Kuepper) next: HOBO
  8. Autumn Landscape (Chico Hamilton) Autumn Nocturne (Art Farmer) Early Autumn (Ellington) Autumn Leaves (lots of covers - I'll choose Paul Desmond) T'is Autumn (Nat King Cole) next choice WOODY
  9. Diverging from the Water label & strictly not a Blue Note (recorded & originally released on French Vogue) The Wade Legge 10" (New Faces- New Sounds: Wade Legge Trio 5031) was first released in 2006 on the UK Giant Steps label (Dizzy Gillespie double CD "Dizzy Digs Paris") - don't think this has had a CD release previously I suspect this is a needle drop unless Giant Steps has access to the Vogue tapes? Anyone know if the Fats Sadi 10" (The Swinging Fats Sadi 5061) has ever been available on CD - I'm surprised it's never been released in France - great lineup!
  10. OK ORANGE it is just gone through the whole list & orange has been done!! Next choice is TORNADO
  11. just found this thread - going to be interesting!! In amor ata (Miles Davis) De Pois Do Amor, O Vazio (Wayne Shorter) Danzon D'Amor (Rex Stewart) Amor, Amor (Duke Ellington) O Amor Em Paz (lots of artists - Clare Fischer/James Moody/Joe Henderson/Duke Pearson/Levitts/Elvin Jones) Next word - how about ORANGE after MAD (has ORANGE been done before?)
  12. Any idea when to expect the final results? I've just sent Jim an email regarding this thread - hopefully he'll respond
  13. Just ordered Bill Barron live (x2), Kenny Dorham Double, Billy Harper live (x3), Jackie Maclean live (Dr Jackle), Tete Monteliou ("I Wanna Talk About You" with Hank Mobley on one title), Baker/Bley (Diane) & Parlan (Blue Parlan) I've read reviews of the other live Maclean CD from the same session (Baltimore 66) & the sound quality is very poor - any other comments from the board
  14. Probably the best person to answer this would be Jim Harrod - He's in the process of writing a book on the PJ label. I've communicated a number of times over the past few years regarding PJ discography details. He does venture onto the board occasionally.
  15. Big fan here!! I think you really need to separate between his solo material & collaborations He's recorded with such a wide range of musicians (not just jazz/imrov) Favourite solo material - Incus recordings -> one of his best are the "incus taps" reel recordings from the early 70's. He released four of these short 10 minute tapes - were custom made as people wanted them & are rare as hens teeth now. The Cortical Foundation released this material on CD in the 90's (now oop) but has done an LP reissue that comes with a CDr of the same material. Any of his Incus or Emanem solo recordings are recommended. Another element of his solo material are the rambling or succinct discourses between & during playing - always puts a smile on my face. Interesting collaborative efforts are LAST WAVE (Arcana - DIW)a trio with Bill Laswell & Tony Williams, GUITAR, DRUMS 'N BASS (Avant) with DJ Ninj. ISKRA 1903 is essential IMHO, especially the 3CD set on Emanem (trio with Paul Rutherford & Barry Guy) as are virtually all of the Company recordings. Duos with Evan Parker - ARCH DUO (Rastascan), LONDON CONCERT (Incus/PSI), TOPOGRAPHY OF THE LUNGS (trio with EP & Han Bennink on Incus/PSI) - even one with Anthony Braxton in 1974 (LONDON CONCERT - Emanem). The larger groups eg Globe Unity Orchestra & London Jazz Composers Orchestra are also highly recommended. He's an aquired taste but well worth the try
  16. make that 4998 - I'd jump at a Bill Barron box (Select or a "Big" one) love his sound Send Cuscuna an email; he'll respond. I'm afraid one of the bigger issues is not how important the artist is, but how to organize and handle the legal manipulations of cross-label material. I didn't have much luck with a Joe Harriot Box suggestion (last year) - never got a reply back from Michael
  17. bugs me too similarly for import CD's - have a good selection of OJC's (plus other labels) that can only be shipped within the states - does anyone know why this is so? I used to be able to buy these up until a couple of years ago
  18. my copy has the 13th track; it's also listed in the liner notes
  19. Wow!! that was fast order I placed (7CD) on Jan 11 arrived here in Australia on the 18th Even threw in an extra "freebie" CD (or was it an error?) Appears to be a very "personal" service
  20. I agree Flurin I have the JSP Vol. 1 set & am very happy with it (wonder if a Vol. 2 will emerge) Kicking myself for not getting the Mosaic set - it was still available when I first started purchasing Mosaics in the early 90's
  21. Noal Yep, I know Used it extensively while I was reading the book - saw it change when you added the new Uptown CD
  22. Thanks for the good detective work Appreciate your effort Finally cleared up the drummer confusion from the Aug 55 sessions ie Bruz Freeman vs Larance Marable Recently read your co-authored Gigi Gryce tome & thoroughly enjoyed it Should be reprinted
  23. What sound problems - must have missed this Can you give any specifics - what discs etc The discs for Ming, Hope Scope and New Life are- on my copy at least- in mono. It appears that one channel (either the left or right) has been folded out onto both channels. In other words we're only hearing half the stereo image. As was pointed out elsewhere, Craig Harris' trombone solo on the final track of New Life sounds like someone playing in the hall outside the studio. Just checked my box - hadn't listened to it yet as only recently received it looks like I've got a dud one too I can also confirm that all 3 CD's Ming, Hope Scope & New Life are in mono (others are OK) - opened all of the tracks from each CD in audacity & was able to observe the wave forms Compared the Craig Harris trombone solo (Blues In The Pocket) from the boxed set & to an original CD that I still have (hadn't offloaded it yet) - what a difference!! time to send an email to Cam Jazz - has anyone actually received a reply from them confirming that they will replace the set?
