  1. What sound problems - must have missed this Can you give any specifics - what discs etc
  2. Just placed an order at the french website - Lacy, Reece, Byard, Rivers, Adams & Evan Parker What a great find - direct from the source If you're buying from Australia the "french connection" is preferable to Dusty Groove due to the strong aussie $ (esp re the euro)
  3. I'm in line for the latest Jazz Icons DVD set - belated Xmas present
  4. Count me in - another Herbie Nichols fan (received his Biography, "A Jazzist's Life" for Christmas 2010) There are 7 titles from the March 6, 1952 session - two with Chocolate Williams vocals ("My Lady Gingersnap" & "Good Story Blues") "The Modern Jazz Piano Album" CD (SV 0272) contains 4 titles 'S Wonderful (mst) Nichols & Dimes (mst) Who's Blues My Lady Gingersnap (vo) "I Just Love Jazz Piano" CD (SV 93014 - remastered & rereleased in 2001) contains 4 titles - note that the 90's version of this CD (SV 0117) did not contain the alternate take 'S Wonderful (mst) Nichols & Dimes (mst) Who's Blues Nichols & Dimes (alt) "Thelonious Monk/Herbie Nichols" CD - not sure of CD details (released in 1986) but I presume it is the same as the LP (Savoy SJL 1166) - contains all 7 titles 'S Wonderful (mst & alt) Nichols & Dimes (mst & alt) Who's Blues My Lady Gingersnap (vo) Good Story Blues (vo) Have I missed anything?
  5. One of my favourites - love his work. He was creating great material right into his 80's. Only had his recent Mosaic Select Big Band set on the other day.
  6. As NON legit as you can get! Explains their bad covers & lack of detail
  7. The Chris Connor Titles (5 - with trio of Ronnie Ball, Ben Tucker & Dave Bailey) plus some Coleman Hawkins are on a West Wind CD (2025) - At The American Jazz Festival with Chris Connor, Coleman Hawkins -> these Hawkins titles overlap with another WW CD called Body & Soul Is the West Wind label non legit?
  8. The recent TOCJ CD replicates the original FM LP (FM 403) which contained 6 titles - Dorham plays on three of the titles Red Door Lover Man Ismaaa - septet with KD (8:17) It's All Right With Me Autumn Leaves - quartet with KD (2:58) Wee Dot - nonet with KD (13:16) The West Wind Dorham CD/LP (Hot Stuff From Brazil) contains the last 4 titles (omits Red Door & Lover Man) but adds Halley's Comet A Night In Tunisia Don't have this CD so not sure if Dorham plays on these but I presume he does I suppose these are the two titles you are referring to? Japanese reissues don't usually add extra titles - most of the time they stick to the original LP format
  9. Have just received the set & am currently listening - sound quality seems fine though have only listened to a small amount I've just realised that 7 of the 11 titles on Disc 2 are also on the bonus Jazz Icons DVD from series 3 Box Titles 1-3 (Laren, Holland) & 8-11 (Sodra Teatern - interview included)
  10. I had the same impression - thought his packaging had a cigar like odour (not unpleasant) but as has been noted he doesn't smoke. Also love the Japanese packaging ethos - they do it with so much TLC. Will miss you Hiroshi - a lovely person to deal with
  11. Just in case, it doesn't say it on the cover all right, but this is >not< a collection of Bechet's complete Blue Note masters, as it could be expected (I did, anyway). 8 tracks are missing. - 7mar40: "Careless Love" is missing - 10mar45: "Days Beyond Recall" is missing - 12Oct45: Four out of six tracks are missing ("Save It Pretty Mama", "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans", "Shine", "Darktown Strutters' Ball") - 9Dec45: "Quincy Street Stomp (Blame It on the Blues)" is missing - 5Nov51: "There'll Be Some Changes Made" is missing F All of the Blue Note masters are included in the new 14CD Bechet box (no alternates as the title of the box indicates)
  12. Forgot about that one - would have mentioned it on my list but when I bought mine it was minus the box (only got the individual CD's & booklet)
  13. Wow!! where do you start lots of great material has already been mentioned Have to mention the Ayler Revenant, Taylor 88 box & Mosaic again - all very special to me add AMM - The Crypt 3CD Matchless - any AMM fans out there? Kuryokhin - Divine Madness 4CD Leo Brotzmann Octet/Tentet 3CD Okkadisk Blue Notes 4CD Ogun Charles Tolliver Mosaic Selects Albert Mangelsdorff - recent MPS boxes The Necks - Althenaeum, Homebush, Quay & Raab 4CD Fish Of Milk (great Australian improv trio) I have a real soft spot for Brit/Euro/Soviet jazz (esp free/improv) - both of my parents are Lithuanian, I was born in London & the family migrated (fortunately or unfortunately) to Australia in 1961 One of my biggest box set regrets was not getting the Leo Document Set - I remember dealing with Leo Feigin probably about 10 to 12 years ago - he had one set left but the cost of shipping & the exchange rate at that time made it prohibitive for me. You rarely see this set coming up for resale nowdays.
  14. Flurin, a) longer text by Fabrice Zammarchi in both French and English b) bunch of photos c) "Recordings" section (see photo link below) d) Some basic reissue info (also studio 101 remastering) http://www.deus62.com/linkto/bechet.jpg Volkher Thanks for that image & info Volkher will order the Bechet box today (Amazon UK with free shipping to Australia)- can't resist @ $2.50 a disc
  15. no word on track listings for the Bechet set yet - I can't find any It's now on the Universal site (germany) but again no track details - maybe 14CD is just a bit too much to list!!
  16. At 5:02PM, the deal was 77% gone. I feel like I'm at WalMart trying to score an xBox. know the feeling especially as it gets closer to Christmas
  17. that was beautiful - just shed a tear
  18. so sad didn't realise he was 80 - always looked so youthful
  19. At the passages that you mention, I hear the bass being plucked very insistently. Could that be what you are hearing? Bertrand. Amazon replaced the set & the new discs did not have any of the above "anomalies" - it was a faulty disc
  20. That's good that they're being shipped out - I emailed Michael over a week ago about the status of the boxes & he hasn't yet replied (normally he's very prompt)
  21. I won one of Brian's CD's earlier this year (90's Gambrell Pacific Jazz TOCJ) - arrived promptly & was in beautiful condition
  22. Anyone here on the board ever see Michael's band when Joe Harriott was part of the unit - would love to hear their reminiscences
  23. I'm shocked didn't realise he was unwell (cardiac issues) was always fond of the comment Cook & Morton made in their tomes "When the big audit is completed, Britain will find itself in trouble for not having disclosed a national asset on the scale of Michael Garrick" Only just got one of his recently released (Trunk) earlier recordings with Shake Keane (Rising Stars)
  24. That's where I got my copy from (eventually)
