  1. It's also currently available at Jazz Messengers (Spain) https://www.jazzmessengers.com/en/98478/john-zorn/masada-30th-anniversary-edition-10-cd-s?mot_tcid=e88200e0-2133-48b8-8f1f-4fbd9d5a9f34 Just found this on the Hoffman forum Yes, DMG is the only place to get it now. Unfortunately, Limited Run (who had been distirbuting this and the other limited Tzadik releases) went bankrupt, and apparenlty Tzadik is out $70,000. Word is that many who ordered through SEcond City also never received their box. This is the second time Tzadik has been burned by a distributor--they were part of the Pledge Music disaster in 2019. There's a series of benefit concerts this month & also a donation link if any of you are interested: Improv Nights 2024: A Tribute to Derek Bailey (night 1)
  2. Info from the most recent Dolphy group posting from Ted Brinkley A variety of ‘facts’ came across the wire this year. Much of it is not written down anywhere so I’m trying to compile and record it here. 80-something flutist Gene Coleman was interviewed on Zoom by Ras Moshe Burnett. He took lessons from Eric Dolphy as a young man. He began lessons while Eric was living on Oxford Street in Brooklyn. Eric dwelt on the top floor of the building. Charles Greenlee lived in the basement apartment. Musicians of renown would drop by—Coleman recalled bassist Doug Watkins, so this places it in the very early 1960s as Watkins died in a 1962 car accident. Eric studied flute with Harold Jones and told Gene that if he was serious about the flute he should also study with Jones. Eric had a cat named Mr. Susie—because it had been initially thought to be female, the gender signifier was added later after the truth had been determined. Gene spoke at length, a couple of hours, but that is all that I remember. Andrew Cyrille is on video giving a remembrance. It was shown at the June symposium at the New School. Cyrille recalls Mary Lou Williams taking him to see Dolphy at clubs in Brooklyn. She described his playing as ‘in the cracks’. Chris N, who organized the symposium, says Cecil Taylor shared a story of encountering Eric on the street and discussing the challenges of critical and audience acceptance, and struggles with morale. Cecil invited Eric to come to Cecil’s therapist’s office where there was a piano. The two played duets there on more than one occasion. Eugene Chadbourne, during his set at the symposium, said Dolphy had transcribed the theme to the television show Sea Hunt. Bobby Bradford, on a recent zoom call, recalled knowing Eric as early as 1951/2 when they were both devoted to the music of Charlie Parker. He recalled sessions in LA clubs playing tunes such as Little Willie Leaps. As I understand it, the never-released Chico Hamilton session of 1959 has turned up on a tape left by George Avakian. Only a half hour of music, an early recording for young Ron Carter, containing the likely first cover version of All Blues. Alternate takes have been found from the Sextet of Orchestra USA session led by Mike Zwerin. (As I probably mentioned before) the Newport ‘Rebels’ counter festival tape turned up which, in addition to the monumental 30 minute performance by Max Roach’s group doing Cliff Walk, contains a lengthy but incomplete rendition of Woody ‘N’ You by a group that includes Dolphy, Julian Priester, Mingus and Teddy Charles. And to cap it off, the Jazz Vespers music by Ed Summerlin played in June 1962 at Washington DC’s Church of the Affinity is on a tape in private hands. Tremendous music and tremendous band, Eric can be heard accompanying an A Cappella recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. Elsewhere in the service soloists including Dolphy are blowing against a men’s choir intoning Kyries in Latin, and/or along with the church organist. The event was televised on the Look Up And Live Sunday morning CBS show. If another memory returns I’ll share it. Last, breaking news: Jonathon Grasse has a biography of Dolphy about to come out on Jawbone Press: Jazz Revolutionary, The Life and Music of Eric Dolphy.
  3. Not sure if this has been posted previously CT Unit with Lyons, Rivers & Cyrille
  4. I've had an Australian pressing (similar to the UK ie through Vogue) of the first JWC (500) LP for quite a few years - I've never seen aussie pressings of any of the other LPs in the series though they may actually exist
  5. IIRC some of the EP tracks were different takes of the LP versions
  6. That's the exact same thing I was thinking once I found this & watched. The up close shots ie Haden's bass playing, are just wonderful. Thanks to William M, another Australian board frequenter for hipping me to this footage
  7. 44 minutes of Coleman/Redman/Haden/Blackwell newly up on YouTube (excerpt has already been released on Haden's doco "Ramblin' Boy") outstanding SQ & colour cinematography
  8. Yes, OA (osteoarthritis) could be a possibility but from my experience it is not a common cause of this behaviour. If his renal function is OK (you've had recent bloods done as far as I can see) you could do a trial of an NSAID (ie Meloxicam liquid) & if he improves (re using the flap) then we could indeed be dealing with a case of OA.
  9. My Atavistic release of the Strange Strings CD did not have these tracks, only the bonus track "Door Squeak" These were actually released in 2017 on the Modern Harmonic CD/LP "Thunder of the Gods" https://www.discogs.com/master/1139019-Sun-Ra-And-His-Arkestra-Thunder-Of-The-Gods
  10. Yes, cats are very sensitive to suddenly moving their litter tray, especially if it's a reasonable distance - if you need to move it then do it in small sequential steps, daily over a period of time. Also they should never be near their feeding area. So, you originally had the litter tray outside?
  11. Drew, Just saw your initial posting This is not an uncommon issue for household cats - things to consider as starters - can be physical (medical) or behavioural or more commonly both 1. how long has this been going on for & how soon did it commence after your other cat passed. Have there been any other significant changes in the household prior to the commencement of this behaviour. 2. Is he totally indoors 3. is he desexed (I presume he will have been) 4. Is he "spraying" (marking) or urinating -> difference in stance between the two 5. Chemicals used to "cover" the urine affected areas are useless IMHO. Once cats start urinating in an area the best way to stop this is to restrict access to that area (can be difficult in practice) & covering it with another chemical just won't work. In Australia we use a synthetic hormone called "Feliway" - comes as spray or diffuser - it is a calming/appeasement hormone that appears to have a positive effect on these cats that are urinating inappropriately if the cause is behavioural. There are also behavioural modifying drugs but how many people (in my experience) have success with pilling their cats? 6. First step is to obtain a urine sample +/- imaging (abdominal radiograph ie X ray bladder) to rule out urolithiasis (bladder crystals/stones) - struvite crystals/FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) is a common cause of inappropriate urination -> can lead to life threatening urinary tract obstruction. If this is all normal then blood work would be useful but usually normal urinalysis leaves us with a behavioural issue. OK, that's a start ps. I've been a practicing Veterinarian/Veterinary surgeon for almost 40 years, primarily emergency/critical care for the past 30 that can be highly significant from my experience
  12. I just didn't picture your dad being of that age after seeing pics of you with Dan - you look too young
  13. your father?!!
  14. I actually bought the whole JSP Waller series from a board member a few years back Kendall does a good job IMHO - he also did a Coleman Hawkins JSP set- covers quite a lot of the euro period material that the Mosaic box omitted
  15. I thought the Tolliver session was also previously unreleased plus a couple of the Farmer tracks
  16. Those three Kleinschuster (WallenBink) double LPs were some of the best jazz releases from 2022
  17. Been mining the Storyville/BL Muzak releases - SQ is so much better than the BL/1201 CD releases of past - the double CD sets for $8.99 are a steal Sims/Brookmeyer double Storyville CD - "Whooeeee" / "Tonite's Music Today" Jackie & Roy double Storyville CD - "Storyville Presents" / "Sing! Baby Sing!" Powell's two double Fontana sets - "Strictly Confidential" / "Essen Jazz Festival" (with Coleman Hawkins) plus "Blues For Bouffemont" / "Hot House" Two Jazz Line (short lived label) performances - both with multiple alternates Pearson - "Hush" (rereleased as "Groovin' For Nat" under Donald Byrd) Hubbard - "Groovy" (later released as "Minor Mishap" under Hubbard's name but also as a Duke Pearson Prestige release "Dedication") some great Pepper Adams here including one of his own comps "Apothegm". This session was recorded for Jazz Line but label folded before it was released by them
  18. all material previously released (on CD) as far as I can see, some sessions more than once - probably best way if you are interested in download only Most Ayler afficonados will already have this material on some physical medium (CD/LP) I thought this new Hat Hut Series (First Visit Completed) comprised of previously unreleased material FIRST VISIT ARCHIVE OFFERS PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RECORDINGS OF HISTORIC AND MUSICAL IMPORTANCE https://www.discogs.com/release/933744-Albert-Ayler-The-Copenhagen-Tapes https://www.discogs.com/release/724525-Albert-Ayler-Holy-Ghost https://www.discogs.com/master/1419553-Albert-Ayler-Quartet-Copenhagen-Live-1964 https://www.discogs.com/release/8489603-Albert-Ayler-Quartet-European-Radio-Studio-Recordings-1964 https://www.discogs.com/release/14240374-Albert-Ayler-Quartets-1964-Spirits-To-Ghosts-Revisited https://www.discogs.com/release/3023055-Albert-Ayler-Quartet-The-Hilversum-Session https://www.discogs.com/release/1301010-Albert-Ayler-Quartet-The-Hilversum-Session https://www.discogs.com/release/5996611-Albert-Ayler-And-Don-Cherry-Vibrations
  19. RIP John saw him a couple of times, once here in Brisbane circa 78 then Sydney early 80s
  20. The Revenant book discography notes "Don Cherry's presence on this recording casts some doubt on whether it in fact was made during the group's Nov. engagement". Late Oct - early Nov: "Without Don Cherry, Ayler returned to Copenhagen for an engagement that may have been a full week or more, definitely beginning after Oct. 18" The Lord Discography extract (see above) still lists that date also see below from AA UK site https://www.ayler.co.uk/html/liveineurope.html note that Holy Spirits (#3) is actually Vibrations [LP cover of Philology W 88 Click image for large version.] [LP cover of Relyable 001 Click image for large version.] discography [CD cover of Landscape 902 Click image for large version.] ALBERT AYLER LIVE IN EUROPE 1964 - 1966 Tracks 1. 22. Extract from Bruce Gallanter's DMG newsletter, describing the Sun Ra performance & amazingly Marshall Allen still conducting & playing at 100!! The final set on the last night of Vision Fest 2024 was appropriately Marshall Allen & the Sun Ra Arkestra. It seems hard to believe but it is true, Marshall Allen turned 100 last month in May or 2024. Not many humans have been around for an entire century, especially someone special like Marshall Allen who still plays alto sax unlike anyone else on this planet as well as an EVI (electronic valve instrument), leads the Arkestra which has been going on for nearly 70 years. This is an Arkestra which plays music drawn from the history of jazz as well as space (rock) music from another world! I’ve heard the Sun Arkestra play live maybe 50 times since my first encounter at the Five Spot in 1973 and they’ve continued to take their audiences with them on a journey to Other Worlds. The current band has around 17 members with a number of older members like Michael Ray, Vincent Chancey and Knoel Scott. The band still plays a number of Sun Ra originals, a number of which I’ve heard many times in the past yet each one still sounds relevant today. Like many older big bands from the mid last century, this band loves to play those repeating riffs which are most hypnotic. Many of these riffs/melodies sound familiar whether I can place them or not. Original Sun Ra saxists, John Gilmore & Marshall Allen, are known for being the first to play those out/jazz, multiphonic, squeaks, squawks and blast sax sounds in the mid-to-late 1950’s, which influenced the likes of John Coltrane, which helps to lead to beginning of “Free Jazz” and freeing the tradition to experiment with sounds of the future. Check out Mr. Allen as he still curves his hand to get those sax sounds which few others can play in the same way. One of those riffs that the Arkestra plays is closer to a Space/Rock jam that we might’ve heard from the Planet Gong (band). Most of the members of the band got a chance to solo and each one shined like a diamond in the rough. They did one Latin sounding song which reminded me of a cha cha yet it still felt right as a part of this set. One of the old Sun Ra songs that they played is called “Angels and Demons at Play” and it still sounds cosmic so many years later. Besides looking like an ancient Goddess/Space/Princess, Tara Middleton was featured and sang one song with stellar dust surrounding it. One of the last pieces I heard before I had to split to catch the last train was a heartfelt Chicago blues song, with soulful sax solos and a Sun Ra-like synth solo from a fine unnamed keyboardist. I was so glad to be “Traveling the Spaceways” with the current Sun Ra Arkestra, more than 50 years after I first heard them live in 1973. This was the perfect way to close Vision Fest 29!
