  1. Downloaded the files & created the three CDrs yesterday - tremendous music; the first two discs are live recordings at Hatfield Forum (Hertfordshire Uni, no audience) from a single date (79) - the Spotlite LP "Fingers Remember Mingus" was created (edited tracks) from this session - here are the non edited versions plus alternate takes, rehearsals & dialogue. The third disc is live (with audience) & BBC broadcast recordings. The interplay between Coxhill & Turner is astounding, seeing Turner was considered "old school".
  2. It's two live trio releases 1. Trilogue - live Berlin Nov 76 with Pastorius & Mouzon 2. Live In Montreux - July 80 with JF Jenny-Clark & Ronald Shannon Jackson
  3. it was released round 2008 in those multi set MPS compilations (two 5CD box sets plus live & solo twofers)- I can't believe it's 15 years since I bought these - are they still available BTW? https://www.discogs.com/release/4267753-Albert-Mangelsdorff-Originals-Vol-1
  4. Fletcher Henderson has been covered in the Hawkins & Hampton Mosaics but I would still like to see a dedicated FH set
  5. Nimbus West Records Quality Albums Since 1978 The IUCC series continues with 3 incredible concerts from Horace Tapscott and the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. Just landed - NOW SHIPPING March 79 : the Ark in transition , Jesse Sharps has recently left to serve in the armed forces, and the setlist pays tribute to his songwriting genius, with both Mykowski’s 1st Fifth and the legendary “Desert Fairy Princess” written for and lead by the desert fairy princess herself, Adele Sebastian. LIVE at IUCC 4/29/79 cd NS-7904c September 1979 features a beautiful and heartfelt rendition of Coltrane’s EQUINOX, which flows into Tapscott’s singular Coltrane Medley. 6. I'd totally forgotten that Chris McGregor played on one track (Poor Boy) from Nick Drake's "Bryter Layter" LP. Re-read it recently in Morton Jack's new ND biography "The Life". The piano work throughout the track is prominent & funky. This is one of the rare occasions where Nick played electric guitar (he borrowed Simon Nichols Gibson L-7C archtop) "Immediately before Nick arrived for the session Joe had been working with Chris McGregor, who was still smoking dope in the control room. He stuck around and, says Joe, 'jumped up spontaneously', playing an immaculate piano part in one take".
  7. Is there a Rollins article/story included?
  8. Yep, picked up a copy at the time - was a winner IMHO
  9. I had a number of communications with Michael in the 90s suggesting a BH Mosaic set - he was keen but had difficulty in choosing a cut-off date so in the end it didn't happen, until now
  10. The very best of Waldron/Lacy recorded live (over 4 hours worth) in Paris over 4 days in mid August '81 - spectacular music

  15. The Fletcher Henderson disc (Vocalion & Pathe 1924-5) looks interesting but unfortunately 11 of the 25 tracks have been previously released on the Henderson/Armstrong Forte 3CD set, making it less appealing to me
  16. This relatively recent AA release (5LP/4CD) should certainly be up there
  17. I have the recording (Prez Box, Vol. 1) - absolutely abysmal SQ but the tenor definitely sounds like Lester
  18. and aren't those shirts so timeless & groovy
  19. I second that as this would have to be in my top 5 from this category https://www.discogs.com/release/29224915-Various-LA-Jazz-Institute-Presents-The-Complete-Crazy-Sunday-At-The-Lighthouse-September-13-1953
  20. OMG I'm shocked - he was a vital force in keeping the Blue Note label (and many others) alive - whenever I see those twofer BN LPs from the 70s I think of him I have a number of letters from him sent throughout the 90s, pre email days RIP Michael
  21. also good coverage in Wickes "Innovations In British Jazz"
  22. a contemporary of Joe Harriott though a bit younger
  23. you're right there - everything I have him on (his sessions & as sideman) shines
  24. been listening to Harry Beckett's "Joy Unlimited" from 1974 on the Cadillac (John Jack) label A strong session with Ray Russell's guitar playing a real standout - the last track Not Just Tomorrow showcases Russel really "going for it" Highly recommended imho
