There's already some speculation on one of the news sites that the government will never recoup any money now. The widow sure gets a good deal out of this. Some friend of his was quoted as saying that the strain of facing the rest of his life in prison when he knows he is innocent was just too much. Give me a fucking break. Didn't know that there was talk of Morris Levy having faked his death. Levy was listed on all previous versions of Lee Morgan's Tom Cat of having written the tune 'Rigor Mortis' (along with Joey Dee and Henry Glover). But the thing they copyrighted was just some primitive arrangement of Chopin's 'Funeral March'. I told MC about this, and it was finally corrected on the RVG (along with the correct spelling, 'Riggarmortes'). Levy also has his name as co-author of Frankie Lymon's 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'. In the film of the same name, there is a courtroom scene in which the attorney for one of Lymon's three wives is asking Levy how he came about writing this tune with him. He asks him if they sat in a room together and wrote it. It's really hilarious. Bertrand.

The Grant's Tomb question was also used by Groucho Marx on You Bet Your Life to help those who had not gotten any answers right. Did anyone ever see the episode of the show where the contestants were Phyllis Diller and George Bernard Shaw. Surreal! Bertrand.

Asking who is going to remaster the RVGs is like asking who's buried in Grant's Tomb! Bertrand.

I stayed up half the night watching youtube. There's some amazing Zappa shit on there. Bertrand.

I can't get to your link, but I suspect this is a video of the TV show Soul! (broadcast in January 1972, but probably recorded in late '71). If so, the tune is either Merrit's 'Angela' or Mabern's 'I Remember Britt'. Bertrand.

Does he really play every known Monk tune, including 'Two Timer', 'A Merrier Christmas' and "Harlem Is Awful Messy'? Bertrand.

Doesn't this belong in the political forum -
The Washington Post surprisingly had an article on Brownie in today's style section. I can't link to it, but it was pretty good. Bertrand. Correction: When I started typing this, Garth's message was not posted yet. By the time my message posted, his showed up. So you can link to the Washington Post article now.

It looks like the Mickey Roker gig is not happening - it's Russell Malone instead. Bertrand.

I prefer the version on Lighthouse - Mickey Roker lays down a very cool rhythm, and somewhere in the middle they launch into Freddie Hubbard's 'Clarence's Place' (how did that happen?). The original is OK, but defiitely not one of Lee's most memorable tunes. His brother Jimmy told me that Lee wrote it in about 10 minutes! Speaking of Mickey Roker, I just found out he will be at the Smithsonian Jazz Cafe tonight. I hope to make it. Bertrand.

Oops - three of the eight tracks tracks also appeared on the Rosewood reissue. So far, Rosewood and these three tracks, plus the Stepping Stones CD (with bonus cuts, but missing a track) are the only CD reissues of the Columbia material. So what's left? United Woody III (except for 'Escape Velocity' which is on the Stepping Stones CD) 5 tracks from Time Is Right One deleted track from Stepping Stones This material could fit on a two-CD set. Or, they could reissue United and Woody III as two separate CDs, with some bonus tracks on each (5 from Time Is Right, and one from Stepping Stones). It would have made more sense the keep 'Escape Velocity' on Woody III and leave Stepping Stones intact, but what the fuck do I know. Bertrand.

It was in the Mosaic box, but that's the only CD version I'm aware of. Some of the tracks are very good, some not. Bertrand.

Captain Beefheart may not be the single most reliable historian on the planet Bertrand.

I only need the DVD - maybe it will be available separately as well (yeah right)? There were 15 albums (not counting Tokyo) - or are they leaving out This Is This, where Wayne plays on only 3 tracks? Bertrand.

Also, Mingus explains in the film that he likes Jutta Hipp better than Toshiko Akiyoshi! Bertrand.

When did they say the D.C. gig is? I don't see it on the tour list yet. I was in Paris when they played and knew nothing about it. I was at a Jam Session that night Bertrand.

According to Jeff Tamarkin's Jefferson Airplace bio, Kaukonen and Pastorius played together for a while in the mid-80s. At some point, Rashied Ali was on drums. Anyone know anything more about this? I wonder what material they played. Bertrand.
