  1. Dusty groove has it listed and mentions 'The Chief', so I guess the titles were fixed. Bertrand.
  2. Rooster, Is this a new cover for the Fresh Sound set? Mine has a different cover, but I know that that particular pressing was OOP. I was told that there was going to be a new pressing with the correct track listing. A little birdie told me that Fresh Sound finally got a hold of the correct tune titles. Whether they intend to pay royalties to Mabern, Maupin etc. is a whole 'nother story... Bertrand.
  3. The first Hot Tuna album is indeed a great record. Bertrand.
  4. Brownie, The article alludes to a train strike - was this strike the result of the terrible incident you describe, or was it just 'business as usual'? Marmande seems to be repeating the old story (now discredited) that Andrew was born elsewhere than Chicago (Haiti is usually mentioned). My understanding is he was born in Chicago, but does have Haitian ancestry. Andrew did a solo concert in Baltimre on 1/15 (rescheduled from November). He did two sets: set one from written music, set two totally improvised (although he did play 'What's New'). The same venue will host a Henry Grimes/Marshall Allen duet in March. Bertrand.
  5. Herbie, Brecker and Hargrove will be at the Warner Theatre in D.C. on 2/18 (bass and drums not listed). It's apparently a tribute to Wayne Shorter, Chick Corea, and Ray Charles. Interesting mix: someone I love, someone I don't really care for too much, and someone I am rather indifferent to (in that order). Don't know if I'll go yet - I may be in NYC instead for the Tolliver big band. Bertrand.

    iPod

I've been charging my iPod in the car while driving using a charger I bought at Radio Shack. This is about 50% of the time I am using the iPod; the other 50% is in the subway or at work, where I am running it on the battery. I hope this does not use up the battery prematurely. Bertrand.
  7. Concerning Marty's tape from 6/9/75: If the 26-minute performance is really just one tune, I suspect it's 'Divine Revelation', which the very same group recorded the very next day. Also, I'm annoyed that two tracks from 'Beautiful Day' were truncated on the CD, and only complete on the website. Are the complete tracks still there? If not, I'll have no qualms about asking someone to burn them for me, since I did buy the damn CD with my hard earned money. Bertrand. P.S.: Just checked, the downloads are 'temporarily suspended' from the Palmetto site.
  8. Somewhat tangentially related to this thread, but anyway: I finally resolved something that was nagging at me for a while (I'm at home sick today). The Andrew Hill composition 'Bobby's Tune' from Eternal Spirit is a different piece from the Hutcherson composition of the same name on Stanley Cowell's Brilliant Circles. Yet another 'Bobby's Tune' (retitled 'For Duke P.') appears on the Hutcherson Blue Note CD The Kicker. Since these are two different Hutcherson compositions, I can see why one was retitled when The Kicker was finally released. As to the 'Resolution'/'Absolution' title change, Andrew copyrighted six pieces on the same day: 'Nine At The Bottom', 'Six At The Top', 'Chained', 'Resolution', 'Interfusion', and 'MOMA'. Since the other five are all from the 5/17/67 BN session, it must have been determined that 'Resolution' was the correct tile for the sixth piece, rather than 'Absolution' (a title he did not use elsewhere, according to the discography). Bertrand.
  9. B3-er, expect a 'friendly' e-mail from Gary Larson anytime soon. Sorry I got you in this. I forgot about Berigan. Alternatively, you could just delete his post. Bertrand.
  10. Claude, Let us know if you have time to get together during your short trip to Washington. Bertrand.
  11. I'm only half-kidding, by the way. Try posting a Far Side cartoon on the web and see what happens. Bertrand.
  12. I hope you don't get into any copyright disputes with Franquin or his estate(?) Welcome aboard. Bertrand.
  13. A minor point, but I think the 6/10/00 concert with McLean, Hutcherson and Higgins was a joint concert with no leader. I remember this concert was listed as Departures and Destinations, and a number of us from board Krypton met up over there (as did Tom Evered - Michael Cuscuna was attending a graduation). We naively thought they would play pieces from Destination Out and Point of Departure! There was even talk of trying to enlist Grachan Moncur III. I remember meeting Kevin Bresnahan, Dmitry, and someone who went by Miles Davis on the old board. Two board Krypton members were there who are not members here: Rob (Vitti or Zitti?) and the legendary hardbop, who quietly slipped into the night without a word. Bertrand.
  14. Wow! I can't believe the family was finally located. And we have an actual date of death. Lady Byron mentioned in the article was a D.C. legend who just passed away two weeks ago. I never even saw her play Bertrand.
  15. Big John Patton's Let 'Em Roll (with Green, Hutch and Otis Finch) is the other 'classic' with this instrumental combination that leaps to mind. I suspect Joe Locke must have done something along those lines - I know how he did a gig at Blues Alley with Larry Goldings that I stupidly skipped, and we discussed later how rare that combination is. Bertrand.
  16. I am a Mathematical Statistician for the Gov'mint. Which means that, in a perverted way, Dubya is my boss Brownie, congratulations on your retirement! I knew that it was coming up. I hope you have more free time now to enjoy music and other pursuits. I hope we can find time to hang out on my next trip to Paris (June perhaps), or perhaps you will make a (non-business) trip to the US. Bertrand.
  17. They're not allowed if they're going to be too aloud. Bertrand.
  18. It looks like the set will sell out with Organissimo pre-orders alone! I will use my usual approach. Wait until the release date, monitor Organissimo for a couple of weeks to see if there are any manufacturing snafus, and then order the thing. If it's already sold out, that will be a Mosaic record. Bertrand.
  19. Byrd's I'm Trying To Get Home sounded very weak to me when I heard it once. I like New Perspective a lot, however. Bertrand.
  20. And only $6 for Southern Bitch!!! Bertrand.
  21. Alfie is my favorite Rollins album. Oliver Nelson could be hit or miss, but on this one he hit the bull's eye. His arrangements just sing. Despite the overwhelming presence of Sonny himself, Phil Woods (in the ensembles), Kenny Burrell and Roger Kellaway especially really make themselves noticed as well. I doubt there are other compositions, but perhaps some alternates may surface one day. We can hope... Bertrand.
  22. That's the one. You may refer to the two-fer itself by the name Back From The Gig, because that's what it was called. The crime is to refer to the unissued session itself (i.e. LP # 2 of the two-fer) by that name, since the name only applies to the first session, not the second. The reason it's a point of contention is because as a result of people using this title to describe the second session, newbie posters on board krypton were getting hopelessly confused and asking such questions as: 'WOW. According to the AMG, Booker Ervin has an unissued BN session with Horace Parlan and Grant Green and Woody Shaw!'. Bertrand.
  23. I'm not sure what it says in the notes to the quintet box which I don't have, but here is what is recounted in Jack Chambers' book Milestones (first edition, paperback, end of chapter 10). Wayne refers to his familiarity with Miles' music; Wayne has recounted this anecdote a number of times. Chambers' quote is from a 1982 article in DB (Wayne Shorter: Coming Home) by James Liska. 'I joined and we opened at the Hollywood Bowl playing 'Joshua'. And we had no rehearsal. Miles had said in the dressing room, 'Do you know my music?' And I said, 'Yeah.' He said, 'Oh-oh.' Then we went on. For six years.' Bertrand.
