  1. I guess Duke Jordan's atrocious tune 'Scotch Blues' won't qualify. Bertrand.
  2. The Andrew Hill selct is AWOL as well. Very strange... Bertrand.

    Time

Tony, Your Kenny Dorham may also include the track 'Sign Off', which is a bonus cut but NOT an alternate. Does your CD list the personnel on all tracks? I can't find any discographies that mention 'Sign Off' and the alternates, and it's not clear which of the two days they were recorded on (it's a different bass player, depending). If I read you correctly, the Sonny Clark does not have the alternate of 'Minor Meeting' which was available on a previous incarnation of the CD (but not on itunes, where I bought all my Time bonus tracks). Bertrand.
  4. Speaking of the alternates to Blues and Roots - what's wrong with the sound on these? The master takes sound fine, but there is some weird clicking sound on the alternates. I have the single-CD version, not the box. Bertrand.
  5. Brownie, By the way, I sent you an e-mail on Monday, but I used the e-mail address that you had last year. It occurred to me now that this address may no longer be valid now that you have retired. Did you receive my message, or should I send a PM? Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. Bluerein, Mine got unsealed ASAP - I assume the others as well! I have no time in life to speculate on hard-to-find recordings. I'm sure I could sell some titles I have for a bundle. In this case, the former board krypton member was desperately looking for this title, and about to shell out some big bucks, when these $5 copies flew my way. I was glad to undercut some shady dealer, and save my friend some big bucks to boot. Bertrand.

    Time

Nothing questionable here. Sonny Clark Trio on Time is one of the most wonderful piano trio records ever. Life doesn't get much better than this. Bertrand.
  8. A few years ago, turnitup.com had three copies of But Not Farewell at $5 each (sealed) plus shipping. I picked up all three, and they are now sitting comfortably in my house, as well as that of another organissimo member, and that of a former board krypton member. Bertrand.
  9. The tape may have a lot more than the film, though. I'm loathe to just ask the head sound engineer there about these tapes (although he's known in the jazz community, and he would certainly have some info) for reasons too complicated to get into here. But for one thing, they may not be accessible to the public (or maybe just not yet?). Brandon, do you remember what the ultimate destination of the Shadows tape was to be? Was it just going to be added to the Mingus collection? Will anyone with research status such as myself be eventually able to listen to these? If so, I could certainly help identify what's on there. Bertrand.
  10. Thanks! In 2003, we missed Shorter by a few weeks (he was there in July, we were there in June). His tour directory at www.imnworld.com shows nothing yet. Bertrand.
  11. Anyone in the know have any ideas on who will perform at the 2005 Paris Jazz Festival? Their website still has artists TBD. These are afternoon outdoor concerts at the Parc Floral de Paris. Since my son Matthew (five today - time sure flies) told me this week-end that he wanted to see Wayne Shorter (who usually plays this festival in July), and since we are probably going to France this summer, I thought I'd combine the two! Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
  12. I thought today's was some sort of veiled reference to Thompson's death. Any ideas? Bertrand.
  13. I doubt Mobley was a last-minute extra: he contributes 2 compositions (granted, previously recorded ones) as well as the intro to 'Summertime' which, if I remember correctly, is just the first part of 'Thinking Of Home'. If Mobley had not been there, they would have had to dig up a lot of extra material. It seems to me that his presence was planned all along. One thing that always got me thinking: what state of mind were Mobley, Walton and Higgins on that day, since their friend Lee Morgan had just been murdered a couple of days before? I know I would have been too fucked-up to do anything properly. Perhaps Hank's sub-par chops just seemed irrelevant that day. Bertrand.
  14. Ronald, As I mentioned above, I think Ron Horton is your best lead. Bertrand.
  15. I agree with Guy. Joshua had great promise (I actually saw him win the Monk competition), but somehow his records just didn't cut it for me. Dewey is one of my three favorite living musicians, along with Wayne and Jackie. Bertrand.
  16. I know - I was kidding. Bertrand.
  17. Another question - when did the word start leaking out that 'Tune Up' and 'Four' were composed by Eddie Vinson? Max Roach announces 'Tune Up' as a Vinson composition at the 1958 Newport festival. I wonder if this shocked those in the know in the crowd (most of the audience probably didn't give a fuck), or if it was already common knowledge by then among the jazz nuts. Bertrand.
  18. Does it actually claim on the tombstone that Miles composed it? Not to defend the estate or anything, but the excerpt from 'Solar' could be there just because it is associated with Miles, even if he didn't write it. I'm sure the estate claims it is Miles' tune, however. I think I read (or was told) that the piece was called 'Solar' as a tribute to Sonny Berman. Can anyone confirm this? Bertrand.
  19. Dan, Tell us more about the rare Shorter/Hancock/Hill/Williams session? Do Hancock and Hill play two different pianos, or are they seated next to each other on the piano bench Bertrand.
  20. Getting back to the most important issue (insert smiley face here). I knew about the Hill film, then completely forgot about it until Jim brought it up. Ron Horton had told me about it, and asked me who might be interested. I suggested that it be forwarded to the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound division of the Library of Congress to be considered for the Jazz Film series that they host once a year. I know that this was done, I guess two or three years ago now. I did not hear after what happened to it (I'm usually out of the loop in these cases), and I did not know that it had been made available commercially. Essentially, it's the band rehearsing '15/8'. Never saw it though. I susepect Ron Horton is the man who would know best about the status of the film. (signature deleted).
  21. My useless opinion: I hate Northern Virginia! The traffic, the strip malls, the unconcealed weapons, the Republicans, Ollie North, you name it. If you HAVE to live in Northern VA, Arlington is the least awful. Give me the Maryland suburbs any day (but take our governor, please). Bertrand.
  22. Rooster, The www link for Mike only goes to his Jazz research site. However, in his signature, both sites are listed and accessible by clicking. Shawn's question can be answered off the top pf my head (except for dates): Andrew Hill sessions not yet available on individual CDs: Andrew!!! Compulsion! Session with Hubbard/Joe Henderson (2/10/65) Session with Sam Rivers ('Lust', 'Pain', 'Violence') (3/7/66) Larry Young: Heaven And Earth Contrasts According to Kevin B., Contrasts may possibly appear as a Connoisseur soon. Bertrand.
  23. I'm constantly whistling jazz heads at work (badly, I might add). Drives my co-workers nuts, which is an added benefit. Bertrand.
  24. Just a quick note for now - the concert in Baltimore was fabulous. I had no idea Marshall Allen played the EWI (at least that's what I think it was). I did not recognize any pieces, but they seemd to be playing some specific compositions and had some sheet music on the music stands. There were a couple of clearly distinguishable melodies (one dance-like piece was played in both sets). There were five songs each set. Bassist Vatell Cherry set in on the last two tunes of each set. Bertrand.
  25. Has anyone been able to buy a Mingus Changes One and Two recently? It seems like Changes One is readily available, but not Two. I really wanted to get both simultaneously. I HATE when they do that. Bertrand.
