  1. Not to nitpick, but Grimes did not record between 12/18/66 and 2/9/03 (according to Mike's discography), so we're talking more like a 36+ year absence, at least on tape. I wonder when his last known gig was before 'retiring', and when his first comeback gig was. That will tell us exactly how long he was out. I suspect it's at least 30 years. It's amazing how great he sounded after such a long hiatus. I wonder if anyone else in jazz has been away that long. I'm thinking of Terri Thornton, although I don't really know that much about her chronology. Bertrand.
  2. What does Margaret Davis look like? If she was in Baltimore, she kept a very low profile. Bertrand.
  3. I went other 9:30 show, but I have to say, I was very disappointed. The soloists were excellent of course (although I find Garrett too garrulous), but the music had no substance, it was all flash. Of course, the audience was ecstatic. Bertrand.
  4. Joe Locke also recently recorded it with Mark Ledford. Beuatiful piece, I agree. All four of the versions that Mike listed are outstanding, but very different from each other. Haven't heard the Locke. Bertrand.
  5. Brad, I din't use a smiley face, but my post was intended to be tongue-in-cheek. The line I used about the originals not catching on is a standard statement in AMG reviews which I find totally moronic. In what way does he expects them to catch on? Very few jazz tunes ever become super 'hits'. So what does this statement mean? I love the Rajah, just like every other Lee Morgan record. Bertrand.
  6. The AMG review fails to point out that none of the originals really caught on. Bertrand.
  7. Brownie, I got your PM. I've been working real late and haven't had a chance to respond yet. Thanks for your help, Bertrand.
  8. Your version has more than 6 tracks??? Bertrand.
  9. Roy Haynes is bringing a Bird tribute to the Kennedy Center tomorrow night, on the very date of the 50th anniversary. I believe Roy turns 80 the next day. I will be at the 9:30 show. Christian McBride and Kenny Garrett are on board, piano and trumper unlisted. Anyone else going? Bertrand.
  10. marcoliv, On the Shepp DVD, do you perhaps mean Clifford Jarvis rather than Jordan? Bertrand.

    Time

Thanks, Tony. Do they give a recording date for 'Sign Off' (and the other Dorham alternates)? Bertrand.
  12. Mike, Is Sam Stephenson (or someone working with him) cataloging all the contents of the tapes? It would be a herculean task, to say the least. Will there be some sort of on-line catalog? I know we discussed it two years ago, but I was wondering if there were any new developments. Thanks, Bertrand.
  13. I believe it was determined that Larry Young is not the organist on 'It's Too Bad'. Bertrand.
  14. Is there a law that states that every jazz documentary must feature at least one Marsalis? Bertrand.
  15. I guess Duke Jordan's atrocious tune 'Scotch Blues' won't qualify. Bertrand.
  16. The Andrew Hill selct is AWOL as well. Very strange... Bertrand.

    Time

Tony, Your Kenny Dorham may also include the track 'Sign Off', which is a bonus cut but NOT an alternate. Does your CD list the personnel on all tracks? I can't find any discographies that mention 'Sign Off' and the alternates, and it's not clear which of the two days they were recorded on (it's a different bass player, depending). If I read you correctly, the Sonny Clark does not have the alternate of 'Minor Meeting' which was available on a previous incarnation of the CD (but not on itunes, where I bought all my Time bonus tracks). Bertrand.
  18. Speaking of the alternates to Blues and Roots - what's wrong with the sound on these? The master takes sound fine, but there is some weird clicking sound on the alternates. I have the single-CD version, not the box. Bertrand.
  19. Brownie, By the way, I sent you an e-mail on Monday, but I used the e-mail address that you had last year. It occurred to me now that this address may no longer be valid now that you have retired. Did you receive my message, or should I send a PM? Thanks, Bertrand.
  20. Bluerein, Mine got unsealed ASAP - I assume the others as well! I have no time in life to speculate on hard-to-find recordings. I'm sure I could sell some titles I have for a bundle. In this case, the former board krypton member was desperately looking for this title, and about to shell out some big bucks, when these $5 copies flew my way. I was glad to undercut some shady dealer, and save my friend some big bucks to boot. Bertrand.

    Time

Nothing questionable here. Sonny Clark Trio on Time is one of the most wonderful piano trio records ever. Life doesn't get much better than this. Bertrand.
  22. A few years ago, turnitup.com had three copies of But Not Farewell at $5 each (sealed) plus shipping. I picked up all three, and they are now sitting comfortably in my house, as well as that of another organissimo member, and that of a former board krypton member. Bertrand.
  23. The tape may have a lot more than the film, though. I'm loathe to just ask the head sound engineer there about these tapes (although he's known in the jazz community, and he would certainly have some info) for reasons too complicated to get into here. But for one thing, they may not be accessible to the public (or maybe just not yet?). Brandon, do you remember what the ultimate destination of the Shadows tape was to be? Was it just going to be added to the Mingus collection? Will anyone with research status such as myself be eventually able to listen to these? If so, I could certainly help identify what's on there. Bertrand.
  24. Thanks! In 2003, we missed Shorter by a few weeks (he was there in July, we were there in June). His tour directory at www.imnworld.com shows nothing yet. Bertrand.
  25. Anyone in the know have any ideas on who will perform at the 2005 Paris Jazz Festival? Their website still has artists TBD. These are afternoon outdoor concerts at the Parc Floral de Paris. Since my son Matthew (five today - time sure flies) told me this week-end that he wanted to see Wayne Shorter (who usually plays this festival in July), and since we are probably going to France this summer, I thought I'd combine the two! Thanks in advance, Bertrand.
