  1. What's the personnel on the Alan Shorter and the Black Gipsy (is that a Shepp session or a Clifford Thornton session?). I'm really only interested in the Cal Massey tune on Black Gipsy - I'm trying to put at least one version of each of his compositions on my ipod. Then I'll create a Cal Massey playlist. Eventually, I may start a thread in the offering/looking for section related to my ipod quests. Among other things, my goal is to have the only ipod on the planet containing the COMPLETE Jackie McLean discography. One caveat: I may leave out Monuments if I run out of room Bertrand.
  2. Lucky dog! You got to see Butch Warren in his prime. Butch is one of the unsung heroes of the bass. It's a shame that his health problems have kept him off the scene for the last 40 years. We in DC are lucky to be the only ones to see him at all, although even that is sporadic. I was discussing the idea of putting together a tribute/benefit with some local players. I think I'll call right now and get the ball rolling. Bertrand.
  3. For those of you in NYC this week, there will be a KD tribute on one night, and a Hank Mobley tribute on another night at the Jazz Standard. On both nights, it will be Don Sickler, Ronnie Mathews and Kenny Washington. On 12/7, Hank Mobley, with Eric Alexander and Christian McBride. On 12/8, KD, with Jimmy Heath and Ron Carter. You know that with Don Sickler involved, they will be digging deep into the repertoire, not just the obvious tunes. Bertrand.
  4. Webster's one and only album as a leader is a beautiful work indeed. I had the pleasure of getting to know Webster quite a bit here in D.C. My life was enriched for knowing him. I was just thinking about him while listening to Long Drink of the Blues. The first take (with the argument) is really an eye-opener. It is Webster you can hear trying to calm Jackie down, who was obviously having a bad day. Bertrand.
  5. What a windbag! All I know about Wynton Marsalis is this: I don't like his music because everything I've heard (except for a couple of sideman dates) sounds absolutely wretched to my ears. Not lackluster, not weak, but actually WRETCHED and UGLY. Very few jazz musicians have that effect on me (it's not like I'm picky or anything), so when I say it, I really mean it. And even if he weren't an asshole, I'd still feel that way about his music (although I'd probably feel a bit sorry for him). Bertrand.
  6. I think T.S. Monk will eventually get around to it. Bertrand.
  7. I have volumes one and three as 20-bit from 1201 Music (and cheap thanks to Daedalus), but volume two never came out as 20-bit. I love how the clinking sound turned out to be Monk's overlong fingernails, and they were cut half-way through the session! Bertrand.
  8. A lot of Concord titles have gone OOP, probably since Universal took over... Bertrand.
  9. I love Big John Patton's version of 'Amanda'. Bertrand.
  10. You know I was joking, right Bertrand.
  11. Both 'Uptown Girl' and 'Scenes From An Italian Restaurant' are direct rip-offs of Tristano compositions. Bertrand.
  12. Does Mary Osborne play on most/all tracks? If so, I'm getting it. She's awesome. Bertrand.
  13. At least she's credited as co-composer on the Mosaic site. Bertrand.
  14. Does anyone know what tracks were contained in the TOCJ BN CD Herbie Nichols Trio, Volume Two? I saw it once in a store and saw that it contained the leftover originals not on the three original BN LPs, plus some alternates. I would also like the track order as it appeared on the CD. Thanks, Bertrand.
  15. Is this the correct LP track order for the two Sam Rivers BN sessions not currently available as single CDs? Thanks, Bertrand. 16. Jim, Thanks for the update. I wish you and your family a very happy thanksgiving, despite all this stress. Bertrand.
  17. As you stated, many musicians published their compositions through Gigi's publishing companies, of which Melotone was one (Totem was another). Gigi copyrighted these pieces in the form of a bunch of booklets, many of them written in pencil, under the name 'Modern Melodies Booklet' (or variations thereof). A given booklet could contain compositions by different composers, or some might contain works by just one composer (although I'm not absolutely sure about that - Mike could confirm this). In more than a few instances, these compositions remain unrecorded to this day. I gathered all of these booklets (there may still be one or two missing) as part of the Jazz Copyright collection at the Library of Congress. The booklets related to Gigi's publishing activities take up a whole box to themselves. There are twelve boxes in all; for example, another box is filled with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock's copyright deposits. Mike and Noal did an amazing job inventorying the pieces in all the Gigi booklets, including identifying which pieces were unrecorded (no small task, believe me). The appendix is true work of art. Thanks to their efforts, the legacy of Gigi's pioneering (but ultimately unsuccessful) effort to protect the work of his fellow musicians has been preserved for researchers to investigate for years to come. Bertrand.
  18. So much for my 'no CDs until January' resolution. THE BASTARDS! Bertrand.
  19. Larry, Let us know if your whirlwind book tour takes you to D.C. I'll check Access Hollywood periodically for updates as well. Bertrand.
  20. Despite treating Sheila Jordan like crap, he still had the nerve to dedicate a tune to her. What a punk. Bertrand.
  21. I'm having a strange problem too, but it does not sound like the one Brandon was having. Last week, I finally got it set up. I charged the battery as said in the book, no problem. Then, in the past week, I bought some tunes on itunes, imported some CDs, and loaded the whole thing. No problem. Last night, I bought an adapter for the car. I noticed the battery was low (90% gone), I figured, it's been a week, time to recharge, and did so overnight. I imported some more CDs, and reloaded with my USB port this morning. Now here's the problem: granted, I have been listening a lot today (in the car, in the subway, at work), but I noticed the battery was already about 80% gone. Does it really get used up in 2-3 hours? Should I recharge every night (like I do with my cell phone)? What worried me is a couple of people at work said that rechargeable batteries can be messed up if you recharge before the battery is totally empty. After that, it never recharges all the way again and quickly dies out. Is this true? Do you really need to wait until the battery is 100% gone before recharging? Or is it just that you have to recharge every night? Have I messed up my battery? My wife just got this for me in August, but I don't know where she put the paperwork. Other less crucial thing: I accidentally clicked yes so that the when I enter a CD, my PC immediately brings up itunes and starts importing. I used to have a choice between realone player and itunes. I tried unchecking the 'default to itunes' option, to no avail. Is there anything else I need to do? Bertrand. P.S. Otherwise, I love the thing. Listening to George Russell's Jazz In The Space Age, purchased from Verve as part of their OOP special. What a killer album!
