  1. Many many MANY thanks, you guys. Y'know, it's kinda bittersweet, looking at this thread from the first page to now.... eight years since the last post! That's a long time to be in contact with anyone, and I'm grateful that some of you I've actually met face-to-face, some of I've had the pleasure of hearing live, and ONE that I actually had the honor of playing bass with!!! Some folks who posted the first time around posted again this time around; some folks from the first time around have disappeared altogether; at least one has stopped talking to me altogether for reasons I may never know.... so goes life, I guess. It just makes me that much more grateful for you all who posted today. Thank you, truly and deeply! And, thankfully, unlike the birthday of eight years ago, this has been the BEST BIRTHDAY EVER!!!! I can't remember why that day was lousy back then, but I sure hope I can remember why this day rocked eight years from now!
  2. I have watched that movie thousands of times and only now realizing that when the camera is on Frank (from Davy's back) Davy's leaning against the cow, but when the camera is on Davy (from Frank's back) he's about a foot or so away from the cow! Frank was right though, the song WAS pretty white... and so was Davy... which was a VERY good thing in the end. RIP Dancing Smoothie
  3. Never in a million years would've thought Davy would be the first to go. I got to meet him a few years ago. He was in town for a local concert and made a scheduled appearance at the local record store. I was way at the end of the line, which continued to grow after I got there. Some 45 minutes later and it's my turn, and he is as gracious and energetic as if I was the first in line. Shook my hand, autographed my HEAD dvd, and let me take a picture with him. A happy memory for a sad day. RIP Davy
  4. Regular Pepsi has been my beverage of choice since before I learned to talk. Can't stand any diet drink or any drink that contains phenylpneuktronicwhateverthehellitis. Usually just have a can a day on top of the coffee. I do need to drink more water, though.
  5. That's the one. RIP indeed.
  6. Man, you come back and the spirit of this place skyrockets. THAT'S how much you were missed, my friend! And I'll echo whoever mentioned seeing your post in an older thread and thinking you were back but seeing the date and thinking, "Drat." In fact, when I first saw this thread, I was sure it was just another old thread. Thank God it ain't and you're back! For a very long time, I hope! Now that you're back, y'oughta do a Blindfold Test!
  7. Man, I wish I could identify or even come up with a guess! I started jotting down some thoughts, but it became pretty apparent that there's only so many ways I can say "Wow! This is FANTASTIC! I am LOVING this! I don't know who this is, but I can't wait to find out!" Really, this is easily THE most enjoyable, listenable, and FUN BFT to come down the pike in a very long time! So, my answer to everything (except track 8, which is neither bad nor something I would skip over on future listenings (and there will be MANY of those), but nothing I'd actively pursue, either; and track 9, which isn't so much bad as much as it just ain't happening and everyone sounds bored by it all), is the aforementioned quote. But I have to give extra special kudos & heap big praise on the first track for being 14 minutes long and not ONCE losing my interest or deteriorating into the kind of free-blowing screaming that usually accompanies big band tracks of this length. THAT is one helluvan accomplishment! So, off I go to read everyone else's guesses in hopes that a lot of this stuff has been ID'd! Musical educations should always be this life-affirming! Great job, HBJ!
  8. Making sense has never been a consideration when buying music previously, so.... yes?
  9. All prices include shipping for one item to US or Canada, so buy more than one item and total comes down, etc. While I'm far from the greatest judge of record grading, unless otherwise noted these are all in pretty good condition (i.e. just buy 'em cuz yer gonna listen to 'em, not collect 'em or sell 'em on eBay). PayPal please. Grant Green LIVE AT THE LIGHTHOUSE (Blue Note, 2-LPs) $12 ON HOLD Three Sounds MOODS (Blue Note BST-84044, some surface noise, tried to clean as best as possible) $6 Benny Golson TAKE A NUMBER FROM 1 TO 10 (Argo LPS 681, some surface noise, tried to clean as best as possible) $8 Mel Brown CHICKEN FAT (Impulse! A-9152) $8 Paul Gonsalves ELLINGTONIA MOODS & BLUES (French RCA Victor, I'd even go so far as to call this NM!) $8 Or buy the whole thing remaining for $25 shipped to US/Canada. Thanks for looking!
  10. Drat! Drat! DRAT! Completely forgot today was the end of the auctions! Probably just as well. Sure hope whoever won that Blakey enjoys it, as my search for it continues, as does the kicking of myself for not buying it when Barnes & Noble had it all those years ago.
  11. I must be the only one who enjoys CABIN IN THE SKY.
  12. Listening to Howard Roberts Antelope Freeway/Equinox Express Elevator on Rhapsody right now. Stumbled upon it while looking for Good Pickins. I may not listen to GP now.... this stuff is incredibly, freakishly, surprisingly, mesmerisingly, hypnotically, wonderfully FAR OUT!!! Wave that freak flag high! HIGH! WOW!!! MUST find this CD! PRONTO!
  13. Mundell Lowe!!!! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!! I shoulda got that! I will simply have to pay penance by hopefully stumbling across this 2-LP set before I die!
  14. Yes, I do combined shipping at actual cost. Can be a pretty significant savings if you buy a lot of stuff! Which I hope to be doing!
  15. If a winner wins multiple discs, will there be a reduction in postage? Not that it matters in my case cuz I'll pay it regardless. And yes, that Dickerson is a mighty fine date indeed! Kudos to whoever scoops that up. And the Edison, too. Makes we wish there was a Verve Sweets Mosaic of some sort!
  16. This.... THIS is why I love the BFT!!!! First of all, I'd never even heard of this Jobim song, so now I'm gonna be on the lookout for any of his versions! Second, I followed Spoon's link and previewed all the tracks on that album, and now I wanna get THAT album as well!!!
  17. HMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm...... Booker Ervin? Sorry about the late reply - no, not Booker Ervin. Crud! Oh well, I'm happy with the consolation prize of ID'ing the label!
  18. Imagine how silly I feel, confusing Etta Jones with Etta James..... But only if you don't have anything better to do with your thyme....
  19. HMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmm...... Booker Ervin? My pleasure! Oddly enough, it would seem I enjoy writing the curmudgeonly ones more than the ones for tracks I dig: being able to get animated like that is enjoyably cathartic!
  20. Oh dear.... I generally like Farrell, but when he starts screaming like this, he tends to lose me.
  21. Yes it's me and I'm late again! 1. Well now, if this doesn’t sound like a vintage Sonny Rollins pianoless…. Nope, there’s the piano. Okay. Well then, I guess this could be anybody. This could be Hank for all I know. But for all I know, I sure am diggin’ the groove! More of this, please! Too much is never enough! 2. AAAAARGGHH!!!! I really hate when this happens: I know the song (“Ain’t Misbehavin’”) and I probably have it at home (or had it at one time), but can’t for the life of me remember who this is. Oh, I’m gonna be kickin’ myself hard on this one! Alright, Hail Mary time: Lester Young with the Kansas City Five. 3. No clue, but me likey! 4. First thought: Mahavishnu Klezmer Orchestra! Not a bad thing by any means! Ah, a man can dream. 5. Sounded like an extension of the previous track. I hope they had two bari players doing that riff over and over; one guy woulda passed out, I would think! That ending at 3:30 made all the dogs within a ten mile radius run screaming in the other direction! 6. Yes yes, y’all! I’m such a jazz dunce! I should know this! Fatha anyone? Maybe? I wanna says Fats Waller playing it ULTRA straight. 7. This is my man Greg Waits! I wish! Except that I’ve rarely heard him with a piano player. Maybe it’s the great Paul McKee! I should play this for them and see what they think. 8. OOOOOOOooooooohhh!!!!! Me likey a LOT! And I’ll bet I used to have this and foolishly traded it away at some point! Kinda reminds me of either Barney Kessell or Herb Ellis. 9. HA! Y’know what this made me think of as soon as it started playing? The opening to the Marx Bros. movie COCOANUTS. Couldn’t even begin to tell you who this is or who it reminds me of, but I dig it! Sounds like they’re interpolating that Hungarian Rhapsody you hear in various Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies! 10. Gil Evans. No, Allen Eager. No, Gerry Mulligan. No, Al Cohn or Joe Newman or Jack Sheldon. Pacific Jazz somethingorother. Am I even remotely close??? 11. Have I mentioned how much I like bass clarinet? I haven’t? There’s a reason for that. Actually, there’s a BOATLOAD of reasons for that! And this is another one. NEXT!!! 12. MMMMMMmmmmmmmm, nice and swingin’ from the gitgo! Sounds pretty casual, though, now that it’s been revealed to be just piano & clarinet. 13. I must be getting old & losing my sense of adventure. Years ago, a track like this might’ve appealed to me on some kind of adventurous level. Nowadays, all I can muster is “Oh gee, you play soprano sax and you can play a million notes a minute, bigdealsowhat.” And as I type this, I come to the realization that this is probably Sam Rivers and could I be more disrespectful of the recently departed? Actually, yeah I could. But I won’t. And quit makin’ all that racket on my lawn! Pesky kids and their noisy saxes. Why, back in my day you had to know melody. You had to have the balls to let a note ring out and breathe. You had to…. Where the hell’s my Geritol??? 14. See? THIS is what I’m talking about!!! Jeeezus, I think I’m channeling Leonard Feather here. All you noiseheads could take a lesion from this bunch. Melody, dammit! Beauty! I don’t know who this is, but I’ll buy it in a heartbeat! I could use more of this in my life, and this is why I loves the BFT! Just when I think I have all the music I could ever want or need, a gem like this reveals itself and I simply MUST own it! Must Must MUST!!!! 15. Or this!!! Good greeeeeazy groovy keep that groove goin brother!!! Stitt/Jaws? Ammons/anyone? Okay OKAY pipe down there, Jackie Mac you ain’t, so just play yer blues and enjoy yourself! And what the hell was THAT???? Somebody slaughterin’ a pig in the corner there? Looks like I spoke too soon. To quote the immortal Fats, “Awwww I’m so glad THAT’S over!” Okay, so my rapidly decaying brain cells have figgered out this is a battle between two alto saxes. At least #2 is diggin’ the groove LIKE YER S’POSED TO DO IN A SITUATION SUCH AS THIS!!! Nicely wrapped up, though! 16. Starting out nice, gonna withhold enthusiasm for the moment. Dig the rap! Another thing I like about this song: it stuck with me! I was humming along the riff long after the song ended. Love it when that happens! Overall, a VERY groovy BFT! One I’ll be returning to quite often! Great job as always, Jeff! Man, you sure know how to put ‘em together! ....and I enjoyed reading this!!!
  22. I am finally, FINALLY, listening to this BFT and am absolutely kicking myself for two reasons: I didn't participate to begin with I got rid of that Howard Roberts CD years ago. I never learn.... Ptah's right on the money: DEFINITELY one for the ages!
