  1. Man, I fuckin' HATED that song, for obvious reasons: Teacher in 1987: "Alfred Rearick?" Smart-ass student: "He's here, but you can call him Al." If I had a nickel.....
  2. Yeah, you say that now; wait about 13 years and see if you still say that! Seriously, CONGRATULATIONS to you and Mrs. b3-er. This is wonderful news and I hope and pray you enjoy every single day with her; they go by WAAAY too fast!
  3. I love that song! Me too! Especially the bass!
  4. Aw, come on..... Arturo Sandoval is gonna be at the Denton Arts & Jazz Fest.
  5. I thought Schapp would never shut up. For a second there, I thought I'd accidentally logged onto Air America and Al Franken was discussing Mingus......
  6. So THAT'S how he got that sound!
  7. I think BFS is more a reflection of how tired and burnt out the Beatles were, circumstances being what they were at the time: tour-record-tour-record-tour-record ad infinitum. So though it is rather weak, I don't necessarily blame them for it. Anyhow, I think Help! is far weaker! And something that was mentioned earlier I fully agree with: there's still something to be enjoyed, no matter how much I dislike it. So even though I can't stand "HG," there's still the sound of Ringo's drums. I don't know what he did to get that sound, but it sure makes all the difference in the world (for me) on those late period Beatles albums.
  8. Thanks 7/4!!!! Listening right now!
  9. Johnny E's band Friday night, Crispell on Saturday; mighty fine weekend of entertainment if I ever saw one!
  10. Insipred by the 50 Worst Songs thread; if you're a Beatles fan, is there one song (or maybe even more) that absolutely grate on you? For me, it has to be "Hello Goodbye," one of the worst songs ever written to begin with. This wouldn't even be good enough for a McCartney solo album; it has no business being associated with the Beatles. The fact that it got to number one on the charts only indicates just how stoned record-buyers were back then. The words are lazy, the arrangement boring, the sentiment just a notch below pure cheese; Lennon was right on when he said "This one smells from a mile away." How 'bout you?
  11. "Electric Avenue" Eddy Grant "Heart and Soul" Huey Lewis and the News "Born in the U.S.A." Bruce Springsteen Right now, anyway. That could change in five minutes.....
  12. That was Jackie McLean using a pseudonym. I know. I didn't! Learn something new everyday! Groovy!!! This is why I love the sense of community, and why everyone should feel free to ask questions, regardless of whether they have obvious answers or not!
  13. You mean to tell me there was no room on this list for Creed?!?!?!?
  14. That was Jackie McLean using a pseudonym. I know.
  15. I've always wondered, whatever happened to Ferris Benda? He played some mean alto on Blakey's Night in Tunisia, and then was never heard from again. Pity.
  16. Oh sure; you just think Bresnahan won't post in here......
  17. Great stuff, Alex. Another fun BFT indeed!
  18. Wow! Then I really feel like I scored a deal: I recently picked this up at Fry's for $10.88! You could tell it'd been sitting there for a few years! Admittedly, though, for one reason or another, I haven't listened to it too much. Kinda one of those things of buying it for the sake of having it, because I know I'll want it later, go back and it'll be gone. It's happened every other time! So, to the poor bastard who went to Fry's today looking for The Ivory Hunters, sorry! Jim R, however, should be on the lookout for Ivory-Hunter-bearing bastbirds coming from my garage (I managed to pry their SACD copies of Trane/Hartman from their claws before sending them your way!).
  19. It's the radio! The radio? What is it? A box about yay-big with knobs & buttons, but that's not important right now....
  20. Jim R., congratulations for leading us in the right direction on that track 8. I am listening to my record of this piano duo! You guessed right! Drat! This is a first for me: not recognizing a recording I own! Way to go, Jim R (you bathturd!)
  21. Looks like I picked the wrong day to quit sniffin' glue.....
  22. Useless movie/baseball trivia factoid: the “major league ballpark” in the background in question is the long gone Arlington Stadium, former home of the Texas Rangers, where the Ballpark in Arlington now stands. (Aside: the reason I put “major league ballpark” in quotes like that was because it was never meant to be one; it started out life as a minor league ballpark, home to the Fort Worth Texans. It wasn’t until the Rangers showed up that they decided to renovate it to become a “major league” park. Whether or not it ever held a “major league” team all those years is still up for debate! All I know is when that ballpark was torn down, so were a lot of precious childhood memories. Now I know how all those Brooklyn Dodger fans felt!) The only reason I bring this up is because of Tim Robbins uncanny resemblance to Mitch Williams; he got his start with the Rangers, and was just as wild as “Nuke.” In fact, many of us thought the movie was a biopic about Williams.
  23. Now there's a classic quote right there!
  24. For someone to have a Blue Note sale somewhere!
  25. ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........................ Huh, wha.... man, I had the craziest dream: seems I went to go see Quartet Out play, and instead of Jim Sangrey, Joe Farrell was there, and then I came home and posted here that Jim Sangrey is really Joe Farrel reborn and..... Whew! Glad it was only a dream. That could've been embarrassing!
