The Box Set Hobby
Stonewall15 replied to Stompin at the Savoy's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
My first box set was the Benny Goodman "The Golden Age of Swing' RCA LPT-6703 in 1956. Long gone after I made CDrs from the 5 LPs. My first Mosaic was their second release "The Complete Pacific Jazz and Capitol Recordings of the Original Gerry Mulligan Quartet and Tentette with Chet Baker" on CD number 102. -

Aside from the great music in Mosaic box sets the accompanying booklets are worth the purchase price alone! -

The art of collecting vinyl: please just let us do
Stonewall15 replied to Pim's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I really appreciate the preceding very intellectual comments. In my simple opinion I love CDs and CDRs because I can play them on by car CD player. New cars do not have CD players so I will keep my car and its CD player until they dissolve. -

Discogs now lists the 17 LAJI CDs as well as the "Tonight at Zardi's" and "The Complete Crazy Sunday at the Lighthouse" box sets. -
Last Chance To Help Us Reach Our Goal First of all, a huge thank you to those who have already made their year-end donation. I will be sending out the official thank you letters soon which you can use for tax purposes. If you haven't made your donation yet there is still time to get it in prior to the end of the calendar year. Activity We’ve been busier than ever but had to put our yearly festivals on hold because we are in the process of moving the entire archive to a better location. It's been more involved and more expensive than expected and has affected revenue in a major way. It's vital that we make up for it with a year end fundraising campaign. HOW YOU CAN HELP We’ve had a huge amount of expenses this year and very little revenue. We can’t possibly get all of this done without your help. We feel what we are doing is very important and I hope you agree. Please consider making an end of year donation. It will go towards the move of the archive, the shelving, the web-site and important preservation materials. It will also help make a 2026 event possible. We are a 501 (C) (3) non profit corporation and donations are tax deductible. It’s important to get your donation in before the end of the calendar year. It will benefit us and it will benefit you when it’s time to do your taxes. Please donate what you can. Everything helps and it all adds up. HOW TO DONATE There are four easy options. 1. You can use your credit card through PayPal using our PayPal account which is sound_collections@yahoo.com (there is an underscore _ between sound and collections. 2. You can use Zelle with phone number (562)743-8427 3. You can call with credit card (562)743-8427 4. Mail a check to Los Angeles Jazz Institute 403 N. Escondido Blvd. #454 Escondido, CA 92033 I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely, Ken Poston P.S. We have just a handful of the new Members Only 5 Disc set: Music recorded live at Zardi's Jazz Club in 1955-56 featuring Stan Kenton, Shorty Rogers and Stan Getz. Those are available at the $125 membership level.

3 of 6 tunes by Tina Brooks.

Absolutely terrific box set. Previously unreleased music from Zardi's Hollywood Night Club in 1955 and 56. Nice companion to previously issued 6-CD box set "The Complete Crazy Sunday at the Lighthouse 1953". The Los Angeles Jazz Institute (LAJI) over the years has issued many CDs of rare West Coast Jazz music as membership gifts.

I also have CDrs that are over 30 years old with no deterioration. In fact I have never experienced any deterioration in any CDs or CDrs.
-
I still think the convenience of CDs and CDrs will enhance their comeback. They have no deterioration or noise like LPs, are portable enabling trading and require much smaller storage space. With a CD recorder any LP can be turned into a CDr and the LP can either be permanently stored or disposed of. One issue is that CDs and CDrs are great for listening to during driving but new cars do not offer players anymore.

Similar to the comeback of LPs several years ago. The convenience of CDs may have overcome the nostalgia of owning LPs.

Blue Note is not the only label not to release CDs of some of its LPs. Columbia (Sony) has yet to release two Dave Brubeck LPs on CD- "Last Time We Saw Paris " and "Compadres".

No jazz. Hoped for Brubeck "The Last Time We Saw Paris".

I have tried to contact the Brubeck family through their website with no response. Is there another way to contact them? -

Brubeck had a problem with Paul Desmond during the Paris session and embargoed a CD release. Have no idea why Compadres was not reissued as a CD. -

Still hoping for Brubeck "Compadres" and "Last Time We Saw Paris" on CD. Released on LPs but never on Columbia or Sony CDs.
