  1. I recently acquired the Columbia Miles Davis "Kind Of Blue" SACD (not a hybrid SACD). When I played it on my SACD player I had to turn the volume way, way up to hear the music. To make sure that I did not have a player problem I immediately played another of my SACDs and it played fine with normal volume. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with the Miles SACD? Has anyone else had this problem with SACDs?
  2. How about Duke Pearson and Pepper Adams? Kind of hard to call Pepper a side-man since he got lead billings with Donald Byrd.
  3. I wonder if Miles switched to a muted trumpet to sound different from upcoming players such as Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, etc.
  4. When did Miles start playing almost exclusively with a muted trumpet? What caused him to do so?
  5. Wade Legge, Zoot Sims, Frank Sinatra (in Australia with Red Norvo).
  6. How about Marian McPartland, Dorothy Donegan, and Pat Moran?
  7. Opening scene credits music from "The Cincinnati Kid" cannot be beat. It is New Orleans jazz at it's best. The only way to hear it by viewing the DVD. The CD soundtrack music omits the opening credits music (I guess) because there is some narrative from Steve McQueen overlaying the music.
  8. I just did a comparison. The Mosaic set has the following tracks not on the 4 downloads: Mildred Bailey- Mosaic disc 3 tracks 10-13 Stuff Smith- Mosaic disc 3 tracks 14-15 Joe Sullivan- Mosaic disc 4 tracks 7-13 Count Basie- Mosaic disc 5 tracks 3,4,6,8,11,12,15,16,17,18 Count Basie- Mosaic disc 6 tracks 3,4,7,8,15,16,17 I am not positively sure about the Count Basie tracks as some of the times do not agree precisely. In any case the 2 Mosaic discs total 39 tracks and 17 are not on the downloads. In any case the Mosaic set does include all the 4 download tracks, plus the ones mentioned above.
  9. Now that volume 4 is being released this December will there be a volume 5?
  10. Brubeck was unhappy with "Jackpot" yet it finally was released on CD. Also, what is holding-up release of with "Compadres" on CD?
  11. Still hoping for Brubeck "The Last Time We Saw Paris" and Brubeck/Mulligan "Compadres". Both were on Columbia LPs, now Sony.
  12. I got this CD through a friend in Europe. As far as I know it is still not available in the U.S. The music is very good and the mastering excellent. The CD comes in a beautiful gate-fold package and contains a nice booklet. This is a nice addition to my Brubeck CD collection.
  13. Gerry Mulligan and Dave Brubeck were excellent writers as well as musicians.
  14. Los Angeles Jazz Institute CD LAJI-13 "West Coast Jazz On Television" has 11 tracks from the Stars Of Jazz TV program that were not issued on the 36 Calliope label LPs. I wonder if more unreleased tracks exist. I am still looking for the 6 Calliope LPs listed above.
  15. I just received this CD. It is absolutely terrific. Many thanx for the recommendation.
  16. Looking for this CD. It is available in Europe but I cannot find it here in the U.S. I would be happy with a CDR. Please PM me.
  17. The Blue Note 10-in LP (BLP-5066) is on the first disc of the Mosaic (-181) set titled "The Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions".
  18. Is there any possibility that the Lee Morgan film will be released on DVD?

    Jutta Hipp

As an owner of the huge Jutta Hipp box set I can tell you that it worth every penny I paid for it. The 6 CDs and the very short DVD are worth the price alone. The 208-page book is a work of art and is far and away the best book accompanying any box set I ever saw. As far as the narrative goes the book gives a very coherent story of Hipp's life, both during and after her musical life. The book also contains many, many pictures of her at various performances and of her art. It is too bad that the book is not sold separately.
  20. Sounds of Yesteryear is releasing a Shorty Rogers at The Rendezvous Ballroom performance dated 9/28/52. Is this truly new music or just a re-issue of the 9/27/52 session previously released by the Los Angeles Jazz Institute CDs LAJI 6 and 7? The Sounds of Yesteryear is listed on Amazon with a September 15 release date.
  21. I had a very good experience with Mosaic customer service. I recently bought a Mosaic set. When it was delivered one corner of the box was crushed- probably due to USPS poor handling. Fortunately the CDs were OK. I called Mosaic (actually talked to a human) and told them of the problem. I received a replacement box within a week. Hats off to them!
  22. I just got the "Minor Strain" CD. Two great sessions. Nice to have when you cannot afford the recently released 10-in LP.
