Your favourite Latin jazz records since the 1970s
mikeweil replied to Rabshakeh's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I found a few, maybe there is something for you among them. David Chesky produced a few albums with one point recording in his favourite venue, St.Peter's church in New York: The three congueros with tres, bass, vocals, and claves, more like Son. With horns, Chocolate Armenteros, Phi Woods, Jimmy Bosch, Mario Rivera - Chocolate's sweet tone is perfectly captured. It features some old Latin Jazz warhorses. Rather experimental, but falls into the category. No idea why this one was still missing in my collection. I ordered a copy. Just ordered this one, too! Some Paquito D'Rivera, too, but I haven't heard these:- 95 replies

What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

This afternoon: Underrated music and instrument! -
There's a reason that Mosaic released box sets of Mobley's 1950's and 1960's albums, and wanted to do another box with the four with Wynton Kelly (Soul Station etc.) which were all released on Blue Note as single CDs. And not just because Cuscuna is a Mobley fan. There was no Shorter box, Henderson only recently. Only Dexter Gordon was collected in a Blue Note box. It was a very satisfying run of albums. Well, I'm a fan ....

This and the Donald Byrd on Warwick with Herbie, and the Teddy Charles with Booker Ervin on Warwick are the worst bootlegs ever done!

My copy of the Trip LP Is not a gatefold. Since I also have the folio CD I would buy this new reissue only if it sounds much better, which I doubt. p.s. I see only the original O'Be issue was a gatefold. Now that would tempt me. p.p.s. the new reissue is a gatefold!

Two photos I made in Frankfurt on August 28. 1975 that I had placed at the start page of my Poindexter disco. The pianist is a local Frankfurt guy, Rolf Lüttgens. Not brilliant quality, made with a Polaroid, IIRC.

My experience tells me any component in the chain can make a huge difference in sound.

After living with the player for a month I am still testing - my CDs, not the player. It is an extraordinary tool. Every disc sounds different than before, I could write a post on almost every one I played so far. The soundstage is broader, very detailed, so you can hear every note of a chord played by piano or guitar or both on unison, or in a horn section. I had intended this player for my bedroom where I have a MyAmp by Micromega with Foacl speakers and a 30 year old Pioneer CD Player which plays fine and makes good sound but might give in any day due to its age, but the soundstage is too wide for this small room. And since my wife liked the sound so much and insisted it stays in the living room, well, there it remains. Bass is softer, not as percussive as with the Marantz SACD player, with a somewhat lower pitched basic sound, drums are more in the background but with more detail. Old Atlantic stereo recordings fare surprisingly well, sounding very natural. It tickles more detail out of old Blue Notes, setting horns clearly apart, makes pianos soundfiner and warmer even on old shellac transfers. But it is mercilessly displaying enginering weaknesses, espacially with some modern sessions with artificial room ambiance. Sometimes I was almost afraid of playing some of my favourites discs because I knew they would sound different. But saxophones sound fantastic, as if they are standing in the room. Classical stuff recorded in good acoustics sounds excellent. I regained my love for early music which I didn't listen to for almost a year. In other words, I have a new colelction of several thousand CDs. Another surprise: It rewards treating CDs with a special spray (CD-Flux, a rather costly juice) with even more detailed soundstages, whereas the Marantz didn't give a damn. So now I can return to posting in the "listening now" threads.

Ira Sullivan - Send In The Clowns (from his Galaxy LP "Peace") He strips off any cliché that might be.

Very sorry to hear this. Saw him with Mal Waldron many years ago which was excellent. He had a monthly gig in Heidelberg with his trio and I regret I never made up my mind to go there. Then there was the pandemic and that was it. RIP
