I haven't heard a bad one among the albums as a leader that I have, but this Impulse date certainly is a standout. I will get me then Black Hawk and Manne Hole live recordings. The first of his albums I ever bought, was this excellent one on Galaxy: He was very versatile and very free in his approach to the drumset, not technical at all, although he had chops for a dozen drummers. No stock phrases, very comunicative, and always swinging. This, IMO is truly masterful - nobody else could have played the drum part that way!

To me, the perfect latin soul mood piece. Love the guitar on this one.

The two Art Pepper Galaxy box sets. Listening through I found out I do not like his solos enough. I like his early recordings better. I was able to sell the live box at a good price, the LP-sized studio box is still waiting for a new home. In case somebody is interested, pm me.

The Clarke-Boland collaboration was perfect and very special. Boland wrote rhythmically perefect fits for Klook.

I don't think it is that unusual - surdo players in samba groups do it all the time. In Cuban music it is called abanico, but with a characteristic short press roll on 4. Some timbaleros - mostly non-Cubans, shorten it and just play a rim shot on on 4 - Cal Tjader had Benny Velarde play it that way. Tjader wanted him to use normal drumsticks instead of the thinner timbale sticks, which make it much harder to execute. In Spanish, abanico is the short trembling movement of a hand fan. But of course, Mendes and other Brazilians certainly listened to Cuban music - Joao Donato even played in Mongo Santamaria's band!

That track is from this LP, one of his last. That mellow tenor sax is Chico Freeman! Sounds interesting!
