  2. Wishful thinking for a Bill Barron record nobody knows ....
  3. Just noticed this was recorded in January 1990, before her first 1992 leader date on Justin Time Records. so this is her debut recording! She plays very good piano on it, too.
  4. Not Liebman, either. I could give a hint, but will wait until next week.
  5. No .....
  6. Perhaps you all think that only Dutch players have that type of musical humor, thinking of Bennink, Breuker and the like. Young Wolfgang Dauner had funny ideas, too. And now there are .... Fellows, please tell him it isn't so!
  7. Thanks for listening. I never would have thought it would take so long to identify the tenor saxist on track 5 & 9 - not Enders, but a US guy. I like those drummers - the reveal will be an interesting read for you! In track 6, btw., only the trombonist is from the US, all others are European - in fact all are except the alto saxist on track 3, the tenor and piano on 5 & 9, and the trombone on 6. No Dutch players anywhere. Did you ever compile a blindfold test? Considering your high standards, it is one I would like to hear!
  8. This is a classic - still one of the best covers of its kind.
  9. Posted it a few days ago.
  10. Today it was discs 9 to 12. Let's see what tomorrow brings.

These are the ones I have - will re-listen tomorrow.
  12. Mercury News Obituary Michael Spiro is quoted there: “One could legitimately argue that Mark Levine was the truest Latin jazz artist of our time (with all due respect of course to the fellas from Fort Apache, Chucho, etc.),” Spiro posted on Facebook. “He didn’t just play standards in clave (an Afro-Cuban rhythm), or music with instrumental solos over a few chords in clave, he played seriously harmonically complex tunes in clave. He didn’t just re-harmonize standards, he played modern jazz in clave … .”
  13. Pianist Mark Levine (October 4, 1938 – January 27, 2022) had developped into one of California's best Latin Jazz pianists - he was in Cal Tjader's band until the latter's death in 1982. He wrote three praised piano books. Among the many recordings that are memorable is Joe Henderson's Canyon Lady for Milestone, but his albums with his own band The Latin Tinge on his label Left Coast Clave are worth checking out, too.

The cover was changed for the CD reissue, both are hard to find. That must have been recorded during one of the European tours of the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra, I suppose?
  15. What actually was the label's very first release, and what was the first jazz release?
  16. Starting at disc 9, when Jimmie Blanton had arrived, right now I'm spinning disc 11. Let's see how far I will get.
  17. Does this include the bonus tracks that were on the single CDs?
