R.I.P. - one of my favourite singers ever. The grand lady of vocalese has joined the heavenly jazz choir. I once did "Twisted" with a local singer - just vocals and congas.

I kept this LP of the David Grisman Quintet: ... because the cover of the CD I bought later is ugly:

It fits very well into Eddie Harris' series of satirical comments on human behaviour. That style of Pop Art was very much en vogue back then. Peter Palombi did that one. Here's another example in that style:

Thumbing through my vinyl shelves today I noticed some that I have on CD as well, but never would sell because of the great covers. They changed the cover, for some reason. This Al Hibbler had a different cover in its original Reprise LP issue, but the photo Discovery chose for their reissue is so beautiful! The recent CD reissue has the original cover.

Japanese reissue from 1984 Now playing: This original Pacific Jazz LP in excellent condition sounds much better than the recent Japanese CD reissue!

Tommy Flanagan With The Wilbur Harden Quartet ‎– Plays The Music Of Rodgers & Hammerstein

The 1987 reissue LP includes alternates of two other tunes. The short running time of "Something Wonderful" suggests a 45 rpm release. Now did they find the tape of the two tracks released on the 45 and found they were simply edited and left them off? I guess someone has to buy a copy of that single and compare. The music is good enough to justify the investment. My wife loves the music of German "Liedermacher" - singer/songwriters. I often find their music on a level that's far below the level of their lyrics, I never liked that folk-style stuff. There's one exception: Konstantin Wecker, who is a real good musician, and has a very good band, even toured with a jazz group. I joined her several times when he performed in the area, the last time was one day before last New Year's Eve. He expresses a lot of the political and social issues our generation is concerned about.

AFAIK the CD version of Total Eclipse was sold out quickly. Never saw a copy in a 1990's store. Still have the LP. Used copies are not exceedingly high priced, but above average.

A local saxophonist once told the story of how he met his wife on their 25th wedding anniversary party. He was after her and while talking she mentioned she was going to a concert of The Modern Jazz Quartet and asked if he wanted to join her. He was puzzled and asked: "Which modern jazz quartet?" He became a jazz fan after that, even one of the town's most active sax players, and almost ruined his happy marriage by practicing and playing too much besides his job of running an Italian food and wine import company. But he pulled the trigger soon enough.

Yesterday, after watching a Japanese student play an excellent rendition of two Kapsberger pieces during a live stream of the Frankfurt Music High School's annual Baroque Night:

Must pull that one out again. Is there a bad Kenny Burrell album? I don't think so.
