He uses a copy of a Ruckers harpsichord and a modern organ built after German 17th century models. His choice of tempos and registration are convincing, he always appreciates and loves the music he plays. This volume will help to place Pachelbel in the right position between Southern and Northern German keyboard schools - he was born in Nuremberg in 1653 and had studied with Kerll, among others, who had been with Frescobaldi in Rome - when he took organist's post in Eisennach and Erfurt he made contact with the Bach family. Heb brought some Italian sweetness to Northern music. With his colleague Stefano Molardi covering the organ works of Johann Sebastian, Johann Michael, and Johann Christoph Bach, and Johann Kuhnau, Brilliant Classics gives us a great survey of German keyboard music from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The piano solo reminds me of some early Argonne Thornton/Sadik Hakim solos with its chromatic runs. That and some Monkish intervals. But was Monk's style known on the scene by the time these tracks were recorded?

What happened this guy? The two tracks for Guild - the other, Groovin' High was rare for a long time - were his only session, Same for the bass player Murray Shipinsky.

At last I got me a copy of this. Much better than I expected - Dennerlein was too busy a player for my taste early in her career but has matured very nicely. I hear a Rhoda Scott influence on this one.

First class, as all issues in this series. Do you know Srradella's music? If you like his style, this is a must. But rather different from either Monteverdi's operas or those from later baroque - composed very close to the speech rhythm of the libretto, still highly melodic but no repetitions of aria verses or ritornellos. I like this better than later operas, but maybe you have to get acquainted with 17th century Italian baroque operas. It is highest level, musically, the composition as well as the performance. Thank Andrea de Carlo and the research team of the Stradella festival and the works edition for their ongoing efforts.

Arguably the best recording of Weiss' lute music, certainly one of the best. Originally produced by Michel Cardin himself, it was only available from his website - a friend had bought them all and made me copies, so I knew how good it was. That Brilliant Classics reissued them at bargain price was really great, a prizeworty cultural endeavour, and now they lowered the price once more. Used copies of the original issues would cost you a lot more.
