  1. R.I.P. The double LP with Dudu Pukwana, Larry Willis, Eddie Gomez, and Makaya Ntshoko is one of my desert island albums!
  2. Pony Poindexter in a German movie from 1970:
  3. They look like Diana Krall's cousins!
  4. What do you think of the sound of these downloads?
  5. Chasing Trane, the documentary, made me revisit this. I must say that I haven't listened to this for quite a few years, and right now the wailin's and meanderin' gets on my nerves in some tracks. The playing concept of his new quartet with Tyner, Steve Davis, and Elvin works beautifully with Coltrane's originals, but less well with standards - these versions of Body And Soul or My Favourite Things never really fascinated me. Tyner's chords get a bit repetitive at times. They still convince me in the more concise performances of originals. But the alternate of Blues For Elvin sounds, to me, as if the are tired from the long recording sessions and need a break. p.s. I always thought, and new listening confiirms this, that Paul Chambers is not getting the rhythmic structure of the bass line on Naima.
  6. I've seen her perform a few times, have almost all of her recordings, and think she has one of the most beautiful soprano sounds around.
  7. Zweitausendeins was the official distributor of Dauner's Mood Records.
  8. I'm glad I saw it, the show was sold out quickly (I had a reservation), a small theater with 110+ seats, and will get me a DVD of this later this year. A good job, but I could have done without Wynton Marsalis' general appreciation blurb. I'd rather have seen some interview segments with Jimmy Cobb, Pharoah Sanders, or some saxophonists from the next generation avant garde scene he influenced, or Gary Bartz, who also caught him live. You can't anything but love Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath for their statements!
  9. IIRC it was at Zweitausendeins, yes - snapped up quite a few box sets at their Frankfurt outlet. It still exists, but their stock has changed a bit. They had a deal back then with ZYX, the German Fantasy distributor.
  10. That Roach Debut LP was the first time I heard Jordan, I loved his playing ever since. There are some live recordings of that quartet (with Coleridge Perkisnon playing piano) from Europe which are worth hearing, too.
  11. His last session was playing bass behind Charles Mingus, no less, on the latter's Atlantic session released on "Oh Yeah!" and "Tonight At Noon". The sheer number of sessions he recorded is amazing. I always liked his tome and phrasing much better than Paul Chambers'. The Savoy sessions you mention, Gheorghe, were Wilbur Harden's, not Coltrane's, btw. p.s. Larry, could you delete the duplicate threads accidentally posted? You can do that from the options menu in the first post. (Happened tome, too, a few weeks ago - you hit the wrong button, and ....)
  12. Picked it up for a similar low price back then - time to listen to this particular session once again!
  13. Recent Japanese CD reissue - sounds very good. It's a pity three tracks from the sessions for this album are lost forever. Percy Heath and Art Taylor make a fine team.
  14. It's now on Last Chance .....
  15. If you know and enjoy Onzy Matthews' other work with Lou Rawls, Groove Holmes, or Esther Philipps, you will enjoy this one, too, his personal style comes through even better without a voice in the focus. His writing is lighter and has a little less punch than Gerald Wilson's, but is just as much to the point. "Blues with a Touch of Elegance", the title of one of his albums, expresses very well what his style is all about. I enjoy it every time I pull it from the shelf to listen. And the soloists are all fine.
  16. I'm with on all points! Just couldn't think of a better word ... But perhaps Cuscuna thought in such terms when he never considered the Hampton Decca sides. No I haven't any of those MCA LPs - I wasn't into Hamp at the time. At 12 tracks per LP they would easily fit on 4 CDs,
  17. I would buy a Mosaic box of the complete Hampton Decca sides in a minute. Ihave that two CD compilation, and it shows the music is much better than one might think and not just "commercial". Besides that, it includes so many R & B godmothers that are of historical significance. I have three LPs on Affinity, too. But a complete set is still to be made ...
  18. Again, too many jazz greats passed away - here's a link to an article with a comprehensive listing: http://news.jazzjournalists.org/2018/01/final-bars-of-2017/
