I have plenty DIDX CDs which I boought way before there were CDRs ... IIRC it was a international code or numbering system for CD masters meant to be used the world over, but was abandoned.

I know, but because it is available in that form, he won't consider. Besides that, as much as I love Pee Wee Russell, I think it is not quite on the level Jonathan wants.

Since this can be found on an in print Lonehill CD ..... nice album.

Any suggestions for sidemen?

His choices surprise me - not the players but rather the albums he chose.

All these tunes are credited to Mort Herbert on the Fresh Sound issue.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Taking turns in listening through the Jazz Crusaders and Gerald Wilson sets - I' so grateful Cuscuna took pains to re-issue this and other Pacific Jazz and Capitol stuff, like the Carmell Jones, Onzy Matthews, Lou Blackburn etc. sets. So much good music to enjoy ... -
My girlfriend around 1980 and myself used to sing Annie Ross' lyrics on "Twisted" during longer road trips ....

Anything that Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, Eddie Jefferson, or King Pleasure set words to may serve as an example. Some may take longer to memorize, but everything needs to be practized. I know several John Lewis solos by heart, but would never be able to memorize one of Milt Jackson's ...

BTW - do you happen to own a copy of the Fantasy 78 or its 45 rpm counterpart 540: As I Love You c/w I've Waited So Long, recorded September 10, 1957 - that's the only pre-1960 Tjader item missing in my collection. Thanks in advance for your efforts, and for your great blog - I used your information on the early Brubeck Trio sides.

If you compare my discography with the listings in Lord you will find a lot more discrepancies or errors - maybe you could recommend me to Tom Lord so I could send him my data. Thanks for recommending the book - Duncan did a helluva job.

Somehow I like 10" LPs, but if there will be a CD issue I think I will wait for it.
-
I'd sure like to get me these two 10" vinyls - which seller would you recommend to a buyer from Germany? I reckon I would have to send an e-mail to Vintage vinyl to pre-order, right?

I think we will more likely see a reissue of Lighthouse '69 from one of our Spanish friends - they already did one Jazz Crusaders disc covering the first studio album with some bonus tracks. They did quite a number of McCan discs as well, with completed sessions, something Cuscuna probably would not have attempted. Anyway, I ordered a used copy of Lighthouse '66 and a new copy of Jazz Waltz from amazon, which is all there is right now. I'm in for some groovy hours, it seems. So far I listened through the first two Box set discs and really love what I have heard.

Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low
mikeweil replied to miles65's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Picked it up at the local customs office yesteday, all mighty fine stuff .... What bugs me a little is that the Zeitlin Select that I had ordered two weeks before this package, still hasn't arrived ... -
Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
mikeweil replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I remember I saw Hutcherson perform in a Frankfurt Club around the time this set was recorded, with Hadley Caliman, James Leary, and Eddie Marshall - there was no pianist, IIRC - disc three of this set recalls nice memories ... it sounds considerably better, much clearer, than my Blue Note LP, which had a bad scratch in my favourite tune, Cables' "Why Not?" -glad I got me a copy of the set! -
Thanks - more evidence that I was too busy with other things around that time.
-
Just found this on amazon, too - what label is this on?
-
Got my Mosaic box today, I am definitely glad I got a copy - these guys hit such a nice groove .... Is there a write-up in the web about Wayne Henderson's departure and the lawsuits? I never quite understood what it wa all about. And still no CD of Lighthouse '69 or the McCann collaboration, right?
-
Not yet ... wanted to write reviews, but too many other things are keeping me busy. It will take me a few weeks before I will have the time to pull it out once again. I think he did a great job tracking Cal' career in detail, with many personal recollections of the many musicians he interviewed, and statements from his two children, which are very moving. Anybody seriously interested i n Cal's music should read this, there are many details that I didn't know. Done!

Al Harewood always played in a more elegant and refined but just as hard swinging style as his contemporaries - I always liked his playing. I will pull out the Parlan Mosaic now ... R.I.P., and thanks much for the many hours of inspiring listening.
-
Saw him live with Geri Allen about ten years - very swinging drummer with great ears. Sad news if it's true ....

That Milhaud box was compiled from EMI releases - I cannot remember any Milhaud on the original Erato label. But since I have two thirds of it all, I'll pass. Somehow I don't like Bernstein's recordings on the first disc - Milhauds own versions are less showy. I for one like the small jazz band version of La Création Du Monde much better - there is a nice recording of it on Arabesque.
