I wanted to say I couldn't find any info on any additional material in a box set prepared by Universal - like unissued tracks from the College Concerts. Lord doesn't list anything but the one previously unreleased track mentioned above. For that reason, I doubt that such a box set was released. I sure would like to hear it ....

That' very sad news. She must have been a very nice person, Duncan Reid told me she helped him quite a bit with information about Tjader's time with Brubeck. She was a real jazz partner, AFAIK - her contribution to The Real Ambassadors was substantial. R.I.P. ....

Was this ever issued? I have serious doubts ...

Arthur Schoonderwoerd's new set also deserves mention for those who like historical pianos:

I just found out that drummer Dick Berk, sidemen to many, among them Cal Tjader and Ted Curson, to name just the first two that come to my mind, and was leading his own bands in California in recent years, has passed away on February 8, 2014, at the age of 74. Sorry if this was already mentioned - a search didn't reveal a thread of this type. There is an obituary in Oregon Music News . Liz Tjader, Cal's daughter, linked this nice interview on her facebook page: http://www.jakefeinbergshow.com/2011/07/jfs-30-the-dick-berk-interview/

Great - after watching this, what's the point of asking whether Jo Stafford was a jazz singer or not? -
This digipak CD has a reverted photo of the harpsichord played inside - even more strange since the same photo is displayed correctly in the booklet. I'll scan it later.

Had a surprise half-day off today and pulled out the one Hutcherson LP in my collection that is included in the Select and gave in, placed my order, along with the Jazz Crusaders and the Jazz Piano Single - sigh .... but I can afford it at the moment, and y'all know how it feels. Now the one that still bugs me is the Woody Herman ... spinning the 3 LP Columbia set right now ... oh my .... do I need seven discs ofthis or is the 3 LP selection good enough for me? -

That's for sure! I have to listen to a lot of early music before writing reviews on my forum, and just got an offer from a rather productive label to receive their new releases - that eats up most of my listening time. I think I will pass and rather get the Jazz Crusaders next month - judging from the samples I will enjoy their groove somewhat more. -

Still contemplating about the Hutcherson Select - any opinions? Considering the little time I have for listening to jazz these days .... -

Which artists have you seen live the most?
mikeweil replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Cedar Walton, four or five times. Doug Hammond in different constellations, especially the trio with Steve Coleman, about five times. Mombasa, Lou Blackburn's German based afro-jazz band, at least six times. And, of course, several German jazz greats. -
Half as old as I just turned! Just let me convince you that you're in for quite a trip - enjoy it!

There's a reissue of very early Helen Humes, a compilation. Can't tell you the title since I heard it at a friend's house. It may be Don Byas or even Ben Webster anyway but I think it is Jacquet b/c my friend was in his big band and that may been the reason he played it. I know Chuck Wayne was on it, if that helps. I really recommend it, though, whoever's on tenor. Humes and crew are in great form. Here's a link to this Humes compilation. It really deserves its own thread. It is fantastic. It turns out Jacquet is not on it, but just about every heavyweight in '30s jazz was, including half the Old Testament Basie Band with Herschel and Lester. The rest of the cast is not to be believed: http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/music/pid/6846261/a/Knockin'+Myself+Out%3A+1927-1951.htm Sorry I forgot to respond to your recommendation - I remember these were difficult and busy days around here. I actually have quite a bit of early Helen Humes, some tracks from that compilation included, and it's always enjoyable - will have to pull it out ... Somebody start a Helen Humes thread, please!

Once saw Rainey in a trio with Mark Helias and some sax player - unforgettably great. I should recommend this trio to our local jazz touring agent.

What was the worst thing you ever tried to eat?
mikeweil replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Once some friends took me to an Ethiopian restaurant - the vegetables and sauces were okay, but they served some soft flatbread along with it that had some rather strange feel, look, smell and taste to it, like it was not fully baked after an incomplete fermentation process - that spoiled it for me. Never again, please ...
