mikeweil replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Miscellaneous Music
We already have Album Covers Showing Alcoholic Beverages - there's the reason for compiling the list ... -
I complied a list here- would be nice to have it pinned. No need for a sub-forum then ...

Jazz Beat record label -- needle drops or master tapes?
mikeweil replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have the Booker Ervin Quartet double CD - definitely not a needle drop, but all of these tracks were on CD before. -
Since all the links in the list did not work anymore after a forum software update, it was necessary to update the list. The links above the line are the new ones, sorted alphabetically by topic. Please understand that it will take a while to locate all threads and post new links. There are a lot of new threads started after the old list was created; links from the old list will be removed after they are updated. I will ask for omissions once I'm done. happy birthday, claude schlouch!
mikeweil replied to bichos's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Another happy birthday, thanks for the great work, and live long and prosper! -
Thanks for sending the CD so promptly! (It's been here for a while.) Really a very nice album. And Gene's sidemen are very good - actually the whole band and the quality of the music make a much higher impression on me than the Scott Hamilton album with Gene Ludwig, which sounds a bit lame in comparison. I'm glad i got this.

Gave that one a first spin yesterday - very, very nice! Quite a thing, with that personnel! Too bad the live show at Monterey wasn't recorded ....
-
Oh - I understand. I wasn't aware there was so much music ...

I have the 4 LP box A Study in Frustration and wonder why Fletcher Henderson hasn't received the Mosiac treatment - is he on their project list?

Now that's a Conrad I still have to get ... -
I suppose most of you own this classics: One of the greatest tributes to Lady Day, but as much McRae as it can be, with nice Lockjaw contributions.
-
Got that reissue of Tonight Only yesterday - the paperwork doesn't give away where the label American Jazz Classics is located and who's running it. Sound is slighly inferior to the Columbia CDs, at least on the tracks from the original LP - but it does not seem to be a needle drop - if so, it is made from a meticulously clean LP. The bonus material sounds exactly as on the Columbia CD issues. The music is great - I was impressed by Brubecks creative approach to piano playing. Wish there were trio LPs he made, as I find Desmond is nice, but I can enjoy Brubeck without him. Carmen, well, is absolutely flawless. Even if the arrangements might not be top notch, I will get me the Collectables reissue of the album with Buddy Bregman.

Now what did you get, after all? Just to make sure: this is not to open a "why did he buy his suggestion, not mine" contest ... -
Bottom line is, there's no copyright on riffs. But giving credit to the originators would be more than fair.
-
After re-listening to the LP twofer Columbia once released, I have to throw my vote in for this one, too!

I'd recommend Conrad's Freya of the Seven Isles and Almayer's Folly. -
The live LP "Take Five" included two studio tracks, Take Five and Easy As you Go, also released as a 45rpm single - the one DMP mentioned. Looks like Carmen McRae' Columbia output amounts to five albums: - Carmen McRae Sings Lover Man & Other Billie Holiday Classics - Something Wonderful (w Buddy Bregman) - Tonight Only (w. Dave Brubeck) - The Real Ambassadors (w. Dave Brubeck, Lambert, Hendricks & Ross & Louis Armstrong) - Take Five Live (w. Dave Brubeck Trio)

I couldn't find a CD issue on Spotlite label lists ...

That video had me ROTFL - that shirt and glasses! He's so cool he can hardly walk ... -
The label calls itself American Jazz Classics - I couldn't find a website. Maybe I can tell you more after the CD arrived. List

1 Melanctha (10:02) 2 Weep no more (2:53) 3 Talkin' and walkin' (4:26) 4 Briar bush (aka Southern scene) (2:58) 5 Paradiddle Joe (2:07) 6 Late lament (6:21) 7 Strange meadowlark (2:42) 8 Tristesse (5:02) 9 Tonight only (7:32) 10 There'll be no tomorrow (4:33) 11 Easy as you go (1:38) 12 Summer song (2:23) 13 In the lurch (2:29) 14 My one bad habit (2:37) Some of the bonus tracks are from The Real Ambassadors; but There'll Be No Tomorrow is a very rare track ... a reissue done right, at last. The few of these tracks that were included on a Brubeck vocals tracks compilation Columbia issued some years ago are excellent!

In this case this thread should be de-pinned. Too bad, was a nice feature ...

I'm getting error messages when I click on the link in the initial post - is it still valid?

The second is live and a bit looser than the studio album. The opening track in 76/4 is a knockout for any odd time fanatic! The live stuff sounds like they really had it down by then.
