  1. I was fascinated when it was released here in Germany - local radio played the title track twice within a week in full lenghth!!! That was unheard for a 27 minute track ... I find it less fascinating now, and i feel a bit cheated knowing how much editing was involved. What appeared as a group improvisation on high level turns out to be a rather normal jam when heard unedited. Very influential record, for sure ...
  2. Yes, this really sucks ... a real solid bass player with a nice, big sound. R.I.P.
  3. I found a way of filtering Jarrett's piano playing and grunts many years ago, it's available for free, works perfectly and saves a lot of money once attached - and it does't negatively affect your nuts or any other parts ... But for those who prefer a more technological solution, Allan's device should be the way to go ...
  4. My wife grabbed Peggy Lee's Classics & Collectibles before I had a chance to open it, and a Scarlatti Oratorio. And she gave me a Christmas CD by a local jazz singer - she had reserved tickets for one of her Christmas concerts as well but due to difficult road conditions we couldn't make the trip .... Reading how many of you got Mosaic boxes set me to thinking .... Maybe I gotta show my wife how to use her credit card on the web, after all.
  5. Must be more than 6000 CDs right now, about half classical (mostly before 1800 and on period instruments) and half jazz and wolrd music, Latin etc. Used to own as many LPs, but I sold most of the stuff I bought on CD and sort out albums I don't really like on a regilar basis. as space is limited. Right now there are still 2000 LPs, I think ...
  6. I remember I really studied his LP with Candido - the conga drummer's solos here are a textbook of soloing on congas and bongos. I like to listen to Dr. Taylor, and although I wouldn't count him among my favorite jazz pianists, I always was and will be very grateful for this album with a conga drummer. Always urged my conga and bongo students to get a copy. I really can't think of any other album of that era featuring a percussionist like that.
  7. I once had a rather complete LP box set (in lousy sound quality, as it turned out), so I know what I'm missing. Given the limited time for listening I have at the moment, I can live without them for the moment. I considered Bix Restored, but they were harder to come by ...
  8. Goodbye Dr. Taylor, and thanks for the music. Will spin some of his records later tonight ....
  9. Count me in - I dig these kinds of records ... ... especially if it's done by a fellow musician I appreciate a lot.
  10. I'm glad I got mine as soon as it hit Running Low - all the Bix I will ever need.
  11. I have those on Japanese LPs and think the music is pretty good - that was a very nice band, and still sounds fresh (pun intended).
  12. Please keep us informed - I will certainly get me a copy.
  13. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to everybody on the board from a snowy Germany.
  14. Hope there are still copies available - will order one in late January or February.
  15. That's one of the greatest losses of the year - a great master at restoring audio treasures. R.I.P.
  16. This album
  17. That's an old story - drummers are accused of being too loud or obtrusive from the beginning - may be a non-drummer's problem. I think drums are too low in the mix 90% of the time on recordings. It's Roy's band, so he can play as much as he wants. If a drummer plays too much for my ears and taste, which happens quite often, I simply put on something else - it's as simple as that.
  18. If the Jamal single is still available, I will gladly take it - what do I have to do? I'll cover for shipping, if that's the custom (Haven't been looking into this thread for some time, so please give me instructions).
  19. Sometimes all it takes is to wait patiently and keep looking: Somebody offered two Nick Esposito 78s on ebay, and I was the only bidder - got 'em for just five bucks plus shipping. Turned out they are the complete session with Tjader on bongos - now I'm waiting for the road conditions to improve so I can reach the studio to get them transferred ... -Nick Esposito Boptette -:Claude Gilroy (tenor saxophone) Buddy Motsinger (piano) NickEsposito (guitar) Vernon Alley (bass) Joe Dodge (drums) Cal Tjader (bongos)Dottie Grae (phonetics) SanFrancisco, May 1949 3135 Dot'sBop 4 Star 1349 3161 Penny 4 Star 1349 3132 SpringFever 4 Star 1350 3133 FineAnd Dandy 4 Star 1350 Now the last pre-Concord Tjader item still missing in my collection is the 45 rpm single Fantasy 540: Cal Tjader: As I Love You b/w I've Waited So Long If anyone come across this one, please grab it for me!
  20. I still must have the concert program somewhere - might take a bit to dig it up ... the pile with all concert brochures crashed while I re-arranged some shelves and is a real mess now.
  21. I was lucky to get a glimpse of live Schuller many years ago when he conducted the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt. I will always remember this. Real dedication to the music, no superficial attitudes. That's the way I like it. I must get me his books before it's too late!
  22. I have the Electric Miles DVD - but I will get me a copy so I won't have to put on the DVD every time I want to listen to this. @ JSngry - the DVD is really nice, you won't regret buying it. Due out February 4, 2011 in Germany ...
  23. Great news - count me in for a copy should you make a CD. Pretty much the same on the scene over here ...
  24. IIRC the two play together on only two tunes of the LP - I had it but sold it, it didn't fascinate me as much as I expected. Still looking for a more representative recording of this great tenor player.
  25. A friend of mine had that Sounds of Swing LP - I might still have a cassette tape of it. But it does not include all of the material on the two Chronological Classics CD and sounds worse. If you have those two CDs you can skip it.
