  1. Proper Box arrived today - at least I again have the Signature and Keynote tracks, or a substantial part. I wish they would have attempted a more complete set with all takes and complete sessions. Seems I will have to keep my Capitol and Commodore CDs. Is there a Hawk discography online, or does the Chilton book include one?
  2. Congratulations!
  3. You mean that small set that went OOP so fast? I won't pay those 70$ or so that you'd need to shelve out these days to get hold of it, but it's still a bit of a drag then! Can someone please post a cover of that set?

Wonderful indeed. I wish there was an article of that caliber about every musician of note, especially in latin jazz.
  5. So the material on this 3-CD set will not be included?
  6. French CBS did a CD reissue years before SONY in the US. But the US edition includes some valuable bonus tracks or edits undone, so watch out. The version Tom 1960 linked is the one I'm talking about: 1. Lulu's Back In Town 9:55 2. Memories Of You 6:05 3. Stuffy Turkey 8:10 4. Brake's Sake 12:25 5. Nice Work If You Can Get It (Take 3) 4:14 6. Shuffle Boil (Retake) 7:07 7. Epistrophy (Take 1) 5:04 8. Nice Work If You Can Get It (Take 2) 4:06 9. Shuffle Boil (Take 5) 4:51
  7. There are examples of Chombo's violin playing on the Blackhawk recordings and on another Mongo Fantasy twofer, Arriba:
  8. Did I say we really need an albums covers sub-forum? Now more than ever ...
  9. I loved Scorpio from the first moment I heard it and still love it - it's a unique album. I'm afraid there isn't anything close to it ...
  10. My sincere condolences, too - I am still totally shocked after reading this, feeling tears creeping up. I can't say how sorry I am ...
  11. Is Concord living on sales?
  12. I have always wanted those recordings in one box ... some I have only on cassette. In other words, I ordered a copy.
  13. I need no more proof that music will keep me young ...
  14. Haven't been buying any jazz for months, but yesterday I couldn't resist: Just as I thought it would be, it's a gas! Boland's treatments of these standard tunes are gorgeous ... I like it that they added the two tracks recorded under Kessel's leadership 'cause Benny fell ill - they swing so much it's hard to believe. They don't swing like that any more ...
  15. Seems like I mixed up those two "Jungle" tunes - what album was Ammons' version of Jungle Strut on? And who in all the world was this "Mussapere" who was credited for writing Jungle Soul?
  16. Thanks for the link - I ordered a copy.

  18. I would use only a recording made with a minimalistic approach, as far as microphones are concerned, and a natural room ambiance - if this sounds great, everything else will, or simply reveal the limitations of other recording procedures. Art Pepper Meets The Rhythm Section was the first to come to my mind, too - those guys sound like they are right in front of you. Cliffors Jordan's live CD on Mapleshade is good for testing. The SACD of the Cal Tjader with Stan Getz on Fantasy - vibes are good, if they sound crystal clear, it's all right. I'd never use an ECM CD - too much digital trickery involved, they never sound natural. For classical I would take a good harpsichord recording - those overtones are the ultimate sound test!
  19. FWIW, Joe Berendt was rather enthusiastic over this use of poetry or prose for liner notes and considered this a high point of creative art crossing borders beyond just music ... I guess he was wild about Debussy's La mer and went crazy about some of his favourite jazz musicians doing impressionist albums about the sea - Wayne Shorter's Odyssey of Iska was on his list, too, and, of course, Maiden Voyage.
  20. Didn't Santana cover Jungle Soul on one of their early albums?
  21. Oh how I envy you ... catching one of those B3 legends is so hard to do over here in Europe! Great!
  22. I have the deepest respect for his decision - I would take the same choice. My best wishes for Mr. Moody and thanks for the great and entertaining music he has given to me.
  23. Polycarbonate, the material CDs are made of, is rather soft and gets scratched rather easily - the smallest grain of dust in the slot taking the disc can cause scratches.
  24. So, if Quebec would have used that band on one of his sessions, there probably would be a reissue as bonus to the respective Quebec CD ...
  25. That's just the two-part 45 rpm issue of the take included on the True Blue album.
