  1. Yeah - I like it when he sings "mi-i-i-i-i-nd" ...
  2. Well ... check out this fine Cuban jazz CD released in 2000 on Cubop Records with Bobby Matos ... Reviewed here, with full details. http://www.latinjazznet.com/reviews/archiv...f/dave_pike.pdf
  3. Too bad - there a few folky singers/guitarists who touched me - he was the one. There'll never be another John Martyn: "Other people keep diaries, I make records."

  5. "Complete" in the case of the Iberian reissues means all that's previously issued - no vault material here.
  6. Now the Riverside is your archetypal bebop vibes album - that's one I play quite often. Same goes for his Epic session with Bill Evans.
  7. I think Jean Boguet's recording is good: he really plays every dynamic nuance as notated and lets the music speak for itself. The label is Tudor. But watch for the price - in Germany you can get it for € 30.00 ...

I'm aware of the Collectables issue and even cheap LP reissues, but didn't the Roulette/Colpix Michael Cuscuna produced include some bonus tracks? The Nina Simone at the Village Gate CD does ... The Nina Simone and Piano was recorded in the late 1960's. Solo piano and vioce, except for some overdubbed organ and handclaps on one track for church feel. Nice album, if a bit short (33 minutes).

I wish I could find me a copy of the Town Hall and Newport live CD reissues at a decent price ...
  13. One of the many underestimated excellent musicians. Haven't heard a bad note from him. R.I.P.

Got a copy of this today - that's the way I like her best, in intimate setings, when she's more at ease wih herself.
  15. There are so many types of middle and low brass instruments .... this Wikipedia entry is a pretty good introduction. It also gives examples of different instrumentations of British and other brass bands.
  16. Usually the brass bass in a jazz band was a tuba, but brass bands often used a sousaphone, same range but different design. Easier to carry while marching. Concert brass bands rather use tubas; note there are no trombones but euphoniums: These have both tubas and sousaphones: Bass players of the earlier generations often played both instruments, e.g. Red Callender and Major Holley. Tubas can be big:
  17. Great to see there are quite a few Bloomfield fans around here ...
  18. Welcome to the board! Interesting label - I wish they would take care of the Manhattan label .... The link should read http://www.sonorama.de/
  19. I'm relieved - but there is a Monk tune with that title, so why did he name his tune just the same?
  20. Great story! R.I.P. Leroy "Hog" Cooper - I couldn't say it better ... but still, is there any solo on Hank's or any other's records?

  22. I will think of you as soon as I can properly handle my new burning software ...
  23. I have only the 1978 reissue on Impulse IA-9343/2 (or Impulse 2-4147, as this double LP was renumbered after Impulse was sold to MCA) - it has the same fadeout as the CD.
  24. Very sad news. I loved his soulful, powerful and ,at the same time, gentle tone from the first time I heard him. It took me some time to hunt down his first Atlantic LP back then ... Just last week when putting my LPs on to the shelves in my new music room I pulled this LP, showed it to my wife and told her how much I loved this photo and the sound of this sax player ... so it goes. R.I.P. - your playing will always ring in my soul.
