  1. Just ordered from Palmetto, and they didn't add shipping charges! Wow ...
  2. Just listening to the first track as found on the Palmetto site. Herlin Riley!!! He rips it up. To tell the truth, I found the drummer on the Doctor's last CD the weak point, relying to much on the backbeat, but Riley .... Oh my good God ... I will buy this instantly.
  3. Yes, I saw him live with Maono - will have to dig out the LPs sometime later this week. Nice trumpeter, not just running licks but trying to find something new.
  4. Very, very sad news. He was, IMHO, one of the greatest jazz drummers ever. Very, very musical, on a level with Buddy Rich, but much more charming and warm, not just pyrotechnical. That session JSngry mentioned with Walfredo de los Reyes is a gem, although the recording balance is a little weird. What really opened my ears was his playing on Duke's Big 4 - conservative swing in such a creative fashion! R.I.P.
  5. Sorry to hear this - such encounters are a blessing.
  6. R.I.P. I bought Niewood's debut LP back then and still like it. I saw him live with Gil Evans in the 1980's, he really dug into the music and played with a lot of fire. Too bad ... he should have got more credit for his fine playing.
  7. The Paul Moer Trio studio album on Del-Fi is pretty low-key - if you like that. His playing on the Paul Horn session on Hi-Fi Jazz is much more engaging. There is a live album on Fesh Sound from back then - that might be better.
  8. The questionable methods and deductions of many medicinal research nonwithstanding, human beings will always look for explanations calming their conscience, no matter what they do or do not drink, smoke or swallow .....
  9. In older discographical sources, they used the term "rejected" rather deliberately - sometimes the tapes had been preserved, sometimes not. Later on, they used a clearer vocabulary indicating if the tapes were lost or not, rejected or simply unissued. Cuscuna sometimes reconsidered his own or Alfred Lion's decisions. In other words, that Turrentine disco needs to be updated ...
  10. R.I.P. I always liked her singing and piano playing - wish I had more of her albums ...
  11. I have a German book from 1961 - jazz LP recommendation guide - that states stereo destroys the cohesion of the groups during playback ...
  12. R.I.P. I only know the one tune Ubu mentioned, but was always curious about him. Is there anything available?
  13. Watch your stylus! Ouch!
  14. "What to do with a broken record" sung to the melody of "What becomes of the brokenhearted" ...
  15. p.s. there is a local used LP shop who use the trashed Lps that way ... but from them I never got the inspiration ...
  16. Great idea! Now I only have to break some .....
  17. Oh well - two of that great band in such proximity - have a nice jam in heaven, you soul brothers. Brother Ray is waiting. R.I.P.
  18. I don't mind waiting, as long as they stay on it.
  19. I hope you're kidding ...
  20. ... and while we're at it: Indispensable for any serious Dave Pike fan is this Fresh Sound reissue: Solemn Meditation - The Paul Bley Quartet Featuring Dave Pike, Vibes This is Bley's GNP Crescendo LP from August, 1957 with Pike, Charlie Haden, and Lennie McBrowne. As a bonus, there is the very rare LP by Pike's band from half a year earlier, The Jazz Couriers, with Eugene Russell (p), John Goodman (b), and Reed Vaughan (d).
  21. Believe it or not, there was a John Lewis Quartet LP for RCA with Bobby Hutcherson! Tjader is also heard on the last track of the Tito Puente CD from the Monterey Jazz Festival series.
  22. Mine is here already!
  23. That Prestige LP Bayeté recorded with Hutch and most other bandmates is pretty much in the same vein - no idea if it ever was on CD.
