  1. Same here. Vick rises above DeJohnette trying hard to make up a band with mass appeal. All good players, Jumma Santos in particular, but I can't help but think that with a looser attitude towards the groove and less vocals the results would have been much greater. These albums were hard to come by in Europe, only few copies around. A keyboarder friend had one of them ans played in a combo that named itself "Compact" ... I must admit I liked them better than their idols as their grooves were much more natural. Some of the best players of the local scene in that band, but I couldn't land a gig with them because they already had a percussionist. I like the version on the Henderson LP better - the looser approach fits that tune very well. Overall, I find deJohnette's attempts for wider appeal too generic.
  2. ... and is(are) there any recording(s) that best represent(s) his playing style?
  3. BTW Paul Horn is still alive and well somewhere in California. A friend of mine working on a Cal Tjader bio made friends with him and passed on to him CDRs of a few rare Tjader LPs that never made it to CD. And we made him a copy of the Chico Hamilton Mosaic, as he never got one ...
  4. IIRC Horn played only flutes, no sax, on Altura do Sol - but I will have to give it a spin to confirm.
  5. I pre-ordered the Tjader - all previously unreleased material on this CD.
  6. Have you heard any of Gismonti's records of that time with his band "Academia de Danca"? The ones on his own label, Carmo, not the rather tamed one on ECM? The one with Horn is more like these, very lively, modern Brazilian stuff, no bossa, Airto's "Identity" (on which Gismonti also played) is close, too.
  7. Couldn't say it better, Dan. R.I.P.
  8. This is the chap for whom Ravel wrote the concerto, I believe. [There were various other relatively well-known commissions for Wittgenstein as well!] AFAIK Paul Wittgenstein never performed the concerto Ravel had written for him ...
  9. Just like the others, this will dominate the soundtrack of my days for a while .... Great job, terrific sound - now the drums sound the way I like 'em - fantastic recording job, Jim! Great grooves, and I LOVE those latinized tracks. The rhythms are much more authentic than with other organ trios, and it still fits the jazz concept - this is it, guys! :tup :tup :tup

    Hank Jones

Just played his disc with Mandingo musicians for my wife theis morning - some unusual gem in his discography. Happy Birthday, and keep swinging!
  11. Disc arrived here this morning - another improvment - grooves like mad. I especially love the definitive Latin touches on some of the tunes, and the rather authentic way Randy lays down these grooves! And it sounds f...ing incredible!!!! :tup :tup
  12. Yes, solos are indeed short. Not your typical Duke Pearson session. A friend gave me his vinyl reissue copy, and the Fresh Sound CD. It's Afro-Cuban Jazz with quite an emphasis on percussion - Antonio Diaz Mena must have been a great musician, but I couldn't find out anything about him. If you like this genre, it's a great record making you wish for more.
  13. Here I am, ready to go. Sorry - I changed my job, moved again, my life has been a big mess. But I am back for my BFT Great to see you back - I was wondering ...... Go ahead and start the signup thread and all, my DSL is malfunctioning, so I won't be here that often during the next days ...
  14. Yep. The other ironic part of his blog is that the guy probably spends more on his audio gear than he does on going to see concerts / gigs or buying CDs. It's a funky situation. I'm curious if the new organissimo CD is out there yet. I would not be surprised, although we have not serviced DJs yet, so maybe not. Before we officially released the new Root Doctor CD, we serviced the DJs and the CD wound up on the torrent sites within days, which would be funny if we hadn't spent $12k on the record. The latter is the part that those rippers don't give a damn about. They only think as far as their own purse. I once got angry when I found out some dance workshop participant had a burn of a CD of a band I had been a member of, but they didn't get the point. I keep explaining that to people, to little effect ..... they do seem to take the music for granted, don't see the work and cost involved, just the fun it is to make music blablabla - makes one wish to pull out a gun and get the price of the CD of anyone I encounter with an illegal copy.
  15. Yes it is. I stepped over that blog months ago while googling for some musician, and have mixed feelings - glad to finally be able to hear some music that I might never get to hear otherwise on one side, thinking about the royalty issue on the other. I would be willing to pay for a download in lossless audio quality with artwork and liner, after hearing samples to make up my mind, and I think something like download on demand or CD on demand at reasonable prices would be the only solution for this issue. But like JSngry I wouldn't want to pay highprice fees for a so-so album. I for one would download an album that's available, only to buy it at the next opportunity. I think the whole media industry is about to change, and low price online retailers are just as much a part of it as bloggers or emusic. The old concept of having a piece of hard disc is about to vanish. I wouldn't mind, but only if I get proper documentation.
  16. Oh gawd! He was a helluva player. R.I.P.
  17. Sorry to hear this. Saw him many years ago - what can you say about a jazz life as fulfilled as his ...... I'm especially fond of the ballads he wrote, Soft and Furry, When we Were One ..... will play some of them tomorrow. R.I.P.
  18. R.I.P. I always found him a lot more original than most guitar players. Sad news ...
  19. Where the hell is Lansing?
  20. Phew - glad you're alive - my best wishes for both of you! And: If the memories of the incident keep bothering you, don't hesitate to get yourself some therapeutic aid. Sometimes just talking it over already helps. But these pictures of it all can be a drag.
  21. Recorded order could be a problem, as the longest tracks are 25 minutes ...
  22. Agreed! Its historical importance should be reason enough.
  23. Yes, all was in the Prestige box - all tracks add up to 141 minutes, a nice fit on a double CD.
  24. But I found this one:
