Complete Bud Powell Blue Note/Roost and Verve
mikeweil replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
When I hear these early Roost sessions I always get mad thinking what would have become of him if the cops hadn't beaten him up ... that version of Monk's "Off Minor" has not been topped - bebop fluency with Monk's music is scary to me, in a positive sense! There is a video from that time where one can see that he was just as accomplished on the keyboard as Tatum - as if the keys moved ten times as easily as with an average pianist. Such fluent piano talents come about half a dozen in a century - to me, Bud was one of them. -

"Bud Plays Bird", which remained unreleased on Roost, is not in the box, but I'd recommend it. -
Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
mikeweil replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
Yes, but that's only one out of five or six marvelous tracks! Rightly regarded as a classic, IMHO. Agreed. If you compare how much more groovy Eddie Harris' hit tunes are, which are the model for these, at least to my ears ... The Sidewinder is the best, but e.g. Caramba is like a soft core version of Listen Here incl. the piano vamp. -

No - it's "Dial 'S' for Sonny" I was talking about. Somehow it doesn't jell ... it may sound heretic, but to me the top Sonny Clark album is the trio date on Time Records! -

Interesting selection - and I tend to agree on some of these: - Minor Move: I wouldn't have dared to mention one of those rare Tina Brooks dates - but RVG marred the sound by recording the ride cymbal too closely, and obviously they all wanted to show the shy and fledgling Brooks where the hammer hangs; - The Sermon: that stuff takes off much better when listened to in recording order; in general I think the great Smith/Turrentine pairing never was exploited to its full potential die to Smith's "controllitis"; - The Sidewinder: most of these dates with a boogaloo tune sound a little too much like they were after a hit; - Maiden Voyage: well, Herbie to me always sounds more relaxed and chance-taking on other people's dates; - Lou Donaldson you either like or not; - Andrew Hill, so it sounds to me, took recording dates as a forum for experimentation, and not all of them yield great results, although all are interesting. -

I, too think, that quite a few of Jimmy Smith's Blue Notes (and perhaps some later recordings) suffer from "controllitis" - it all sounds to me as if he was after something he never quite achieved, contrary to my favourite competitor, Don Patterson, who always sounds perfectly at home in the respective setting. Listening to all of those Blue Note hard bop dates can easily become too much of a good thing. That's why I reduced my collection to those that I consider essential - but I wouldn't call the others overrated. There are some that I think one can live without, like Sonny Clark's first quintet date, which I find uninspired, some of the Jimmy Smiths, but this is a purely subjective matter. -
Could it be Blue Note employed some expert to hack this thread? No problem here viewing the complete thread including the last page ...

Right now, Lonehill would be the most likely candidate - plenty sideman dates on those labels, too.

I saw him live back then with Stone Alliance - quite a bit of heavily engaged tenor, no soprano that night. Some of his solos on the PM Records LPs of this band and on his own records are among the most energetic tenor I ever heard. He was deeply into late Coltrane back then, but I liked that much better than the Rollins influence that showed after his move to France. I'd sure go see him if he played somewhere around here ...

Most people seem to approach his music from a superficial point of view. If Stan Kenton was important, so was Don Ellis, in at least the same way and quality. His dedication to the music was second to none.

It was pointed out to me by a member of the Tjader Family that there must have been a misunderstanding between my source and them - of course they do get royalties, and ask this matter is no longer discussed.

Works okay here, but at first I saw only a blank page - a reload brought the familiar appaearance, and the searches yield normal results ...

Jazz on the Alphorn?
mikeweil replied to Tom in RI's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I vaguely remember some German freejazz great using one in a concert - Günter "Baby" Sommer ? Can't remember ... -
Library music? Sounds like a disc from a real band they just used for that film, which was some erotic filler between full movies - I wouldn't have noticed, but I had my video recorder running through, so It caught my attention when I played back the movies. Here's the link to the track from the second filler movie: # 2

Rapidhare link - zipped mp3 file - will be deleted once it is identified. Thanks!

I'm looking for a track from a band with a Meters-type groove, Rhodes piano, electric bass and drums, and a horn section inlucding trumpet, trombone and sax, the first theme sounds like some Blue Note number, later they quote Hot House and Manteca. Heard this as a background for some movie but it isn't credited - I will try to make an extract and post it here. But the mix is so distinctive someone here might know this right away ...

rare Mastersounds/Wes discovery

Is this available somewhere? I'd buy this in a second. Milt Holland is a favorite of mine,as well as the Montgomery clan and their affiliates. -
I've added you to the list!

We already know the new crew in charge of the ex-Fantasy vaults don't know what they're doing - so what?

Big fire in Universal studios destroyed jazz recordings?

RCA dumping their Camden branch may be a case in point ... Source Reading about this almost makes me vomit. -
The Mobile Fidelity SACD sounds as good as it gets - see SA-CD.net for a comparative review.

Richard Sudhalter R.I.P.

What a loss again - I have his Bix book and appreciate it very much. -
He was great, as was his groove. R.I.P. This great instructional DVD on New Orleans drumming styles has him tell some of his tricks:
