  1. AFAIK this concerned only the US pressings Warner was responsible for, who distributed ECM in the US at that time, and it was the reason Eicher did not renew that deal. I had two or three of these, they were sold cheaper over here than the German pressings, and they sucked indeed.
  2. ..... which I found strange, but only at first sight. Why not? I'll work out mine later .....
  3. That's exactly the point!
  4. I experienced that kind of thing in a Mainz suburb in the early 1980's. I was asleep at my girlfriend's side when we both woke up from something shaking the floor and the matresses below us. She murmured something like "what is this?" and I figured it could have been a heavy truck passing the house, but as it was in the middle of the night and trucks never passed through this small street I figured it was an earthquake and told her so. She stood up in the bed and shouted "what? an earthquake!!! You sure?" I said "Yes" and turned around to get some more sleep - it was over, anyway, and the house seemed undamaged, and there was nothing I could do. She stayed awake until morning, and the radio news confirmed a rare earthquake in the Rhine Valley near Wiesbaden - we were about five miles from the epicentre.
  5. My thoughts exactly. Therapists especially. And musicians - heaven is a gig not interrupted by cell phones. But I hope recording equipment doesn't pick up the jammer signal - it does pick up radio waves and cell phone signals. So .... Same goes for airplanes.
  6. Thelonious Monk - Four In One Wayne Shorter - El Gaucho Tadd Dameron - If You Could See Me Now
  7. Virusses aside, SACD currently seems to have a market niche in a) Japan b) independent classical labels favoring natural room ambiance recording. Since jazz is recorded with multi-miking and articial ambiance most of the time these days, the high resolution is not of much advantage sound-wise. The jazz lables recording SACDs right now are audiophile oriented, like Chesky. See the new releases at SACD.net (no virusses there!).
  8. "Duke Ellington and His Orchestra made some accidental stereo recordings on February 3, 1932 for RCA Victor. It was a fairly standard practice in that era to record using more than one microphone and disc cutter. The various versions could be compared, to see which had the best microphone positioning. It also allowed for safety masters in case something happened to the original. Although the records are fairly rare, a collector had both versions and noticed that while they appeared to be the same performance, the sound mix was different on each. When the two recordings were synchronized, it became stereo." Thanks - these are the ones I was talking about!
  9. Well, it should have a power switch and a volume control ...
  10. If you read between the lines of a Maupin interview a while back, you might notice, well, some almost resignative concern about the date of reissue ...
  11. Fantasy recorded a number of Cal Tjader tracks in genuine stereo as early as 1954! But as there was no playback equipment available for the public there was not yet a market, and they weren't released in stereo until 1960. I can post details if someone's interested. I also have some experimental Ellington recordings in the complete RCA Victor box that could be called stereo - would have to look up details
  12. ... and you can still join the party! Send me a PM and you're in - the mailbox will be checked on a daily basis.
  13. Please post your comments here - there is room for guesses, as there are some musicians involved you wouldn't expect to play in such a context, but I'm more interested in how you find the respective mixes of the components - anyway, looking forward to whatever you want to say, don't hold back, and play it loud!
  14. Hope you disabled vibration alarm ...

    Donald Ayler

Whoever wrote that should brush up his Black Power history. It's Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown ..... Never had a chance to listen to a Donald Ayler recording, but the news of his death is saddening.
  16. Bought the Maupin today - the remastering is very good. But I'll keep my LP if only for the cover ... Had a listen to the Redman, but wasn't in the mood.
  17. a quick search didn't help... what's on that twofer? "Kirk's Work" and "Jaki Byard Experience"? Or is there anything else by Rahsaan that's part of the Fantasy holdings? These two LPs exactly - all that Rahsaan recorded for Prestige.
  18. I'd recommend the burning software I use, but it's in German language - it includes a very basic sound editor that I used to adjust volume levels in my new BFT, and it worked without compressing or distorting. FWIW: feurio! - just saw they have an English version as well!
  19. I had a listen today at my retailer to the Pre-Rahsaan CD - the credits say it is a new remastering by Joe Tarrantino, and it sounds indeed very good, and can compete with the RVG. Saturn in Frankfurt sells it at € 9,99! That means, you get two sessions for the price of one! Wish I hadn't already bought the RVG of Funk Underneath!
  20. Sorry if I dusted off old worn hats - that is, I wasn't aware of those folddown mixes. I come to like mono more and more, and in the case of the Atlantics I totally agree with you.
  21. Next time, Nate - I hope there will be one - take all the risks to want to take!
  22. Thanks for posting the link I just wanted to ask for! I was laughing out loud when I read Nate's remark about the answers being practically being below our noses on his blog ....
  23. Pianist Geoffrey Keezer's parents are both music teachers, if that counts. IIRC Christian McBride has a line of bassists in the family. And, I forgot trumpeter Nicholas Payton, whose father or uncle plays bass - what was his name?
  24. You may wish to reconsider.. Definitely not, as I just noticed I have to pay the remainder for our one week in Sicily later in Novemeber as well .....
