  1. Sadly unlikely to find it in a flea market over here. Nothing online to hear either
  2. Absolute gem, desert island for me. Enjoy!
  3. Yes, it's just the thing I was hoping would be suggested. I found it on Tidal. Lined up for a couple of upcoming long train journeys. Just have to remember to not sing along out loud
  4. I like the sound of that
  5. Me too, loved 'The Unforgettable Fire'
  6. Ouch! In a good way, that hits a spot
  7. Thanks everyone, lots to listen to These are just what I was after, especially as I know the names as an in (I had no idea the Womacks had this background, absolutely no surprise though). The compilation looks interesting Yes to both of these, thanks. Inez delivers that's for sure Fabulous
  8. OK, so off the back and success of Pim's Soul thread here's one for some Gospel recommendations. I know next to nothing about the genre beyond Aretha's backstory and a very little of The Staple Singers. I remember The Winans having a moment in the UK in the 80s. I'm not sure how my lack of any faith will influence my reaction to this music or not but let's give me a chance. Go easy on me...
  9. Have we mentioned Smokey? Seems to be doing ok... https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/apr/27/at-83-i-still-feel-sexual-smokey-robinson-on-love-joy-drugs-motown-and-his-affair-with-diana-ross
  10. I agree. And I only liked bits of Rattle & Hum
  11. Thank you, I shall investigate
  12. Yes, that's my understanding too. I had them all when the Mosaic was released and decided I could live without X-75 pt.2, although pt.1 is pretty special
  13. Now that's somewhere I need to go sometime I haven't the faintest clue about the genre. A recent big impression was made by Jimetta Rose and the Voices of Creation which to my uneducated ear has at least a Gospel influence?
  14. Marion Brown - Afternoon Of A georgia Faun [ECM, Germany 1970] Great album, great cover art
  15. Charles Mingus - Something Like A Bird [Atlantic, 1980]
  16. Yes, and yes. I wish I hadn't asked the question now 😃
  17. Yeah, good call. But I'm not having anyone else in that class...
  18. NOK Cultural Ensemble - Njhyi [SA Recordings, UK 2023]
  19. Is anyone in the same class as the Rev. Green?
  20. It's great. A very clever choice of tunes and covering 'Sign Of The Times' is brave and he suceeds with aplomb Part of The Valentine Brothers who had a UK dance hit with this great tune, later taken to wider audience by Simply Red (but the original is far superior}. A big tune of my dancing days 😃 Prior to that he sang with Young Holt Unlimited and other largely West Coast bands, I think. Two other leader dates available on Tidal, both very good soul but less socially conscious than the new one, so surprised not on Spotify One listed here https://www.discogs.com/artist/182422-Billy-Valentine Gilles Peterson had him as a guest on his BBC Radio 6 show recently, not sure if you can access that in The Netherlands but it was a good interview. I'm sure others will know more
  21. John Tchicai/Archie Shepp - Rufus [Fontana, UK 1966]
  22. Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis with Shirley Scott - Cookin' With Jaws And The Queen [Craft, 2023] LP. 4, 'Smokin''
  23. James Newton - Echo Canyon [Celestial Harmonies, 1984] Ustad Bismillah Khan - Shennai [His Masters Voice, India 1969]
  24. Definitely, why didn't I think of that one, I've been playing it a lot. Has the political elements that you are looking for Pim
