  1. I didn't buy the Wood Flute box because it didn't have enough variety. Now if it had had a couple of the large scale pieces from the new box instead of some of the quartet that would make a must-buy box for me. As it is I'm unlikely to buy either although I've always liked Parker long form so maybe the new one, one day. That orchestral piece ways heavy against though I would be the first in the queue were the quartet to play London
  2. You probably do. No great surprises for those that know and love McPhee of that vintage. The 'friends and neighbours' credited with variety of percussion create a very nice groove over which Joe and, I suspect brother Charlie on flute, blows as Joe did and still does. Snyder's contributions are very telling not only creating background contexts but duetting with McPhee and soloing on occasion. Sound quality is good in a live way Anyone who enjoys "Pieces Of Light" and "Willisau Concert" should enjoy this I think
  3. Joe McPhee & John Snyder - To Be Continued [Kye]
  4. Thanks. That's a crowded room but I bet a hell of a sound comes out
  5. I have the LPs. I have the LPs. That's a very intriguing collection of musicians. How often are they all on the same track, if at all?
  6. I haven't been able to get into this one. Something about it grates on me. I don't like the bad sound, for one, or the pervasive audience noise. But I also just don't hear Dunamll click with the Americans. The ones I've heard that I really like are the Mujicians, Ghostly Thoughts, Babu Trio & Sextet on SLAM, Remembrance with Elton Dean, Deep Joy on DUNS, and the duos with Tony Bianco. I think about half of the Brit contingent of this board were at the concert this line-up did at Cheltenham some years back. Though we never spoke to one another! Good old British politeness. Couldn't possibly have imposed, Old Chap I'm also not overly fond of that trio date. The gig, however, was great
  7. Viv Albertine lists "Dancing In Your Head" as something she was listening to in 79-81 (in her autobio 'Clothes, Music, Boys). The only other Jazz album she specifically lists is Bitches Brew. Othe jazz artists are Pharoah Sanders, Anthony Braxton, Eddie Harris, Don Cherry and improve listed from Company, Beresford, Zorn
  8. Anyone with the Duns box can certainly call themselves a fan I'm with you on the over-recording and the bagpipes too (as is A Lark Ascending, I'm pretty sure, so we're a minority of three at least). One of the best live Dunmall experiences was a duo with Mark Sanders where the pipes figured prominently
  9. that makes me feel better. I shouldn't but it does Glad that Switzerland hasn't been co-opted into the US after all. Enjoy the CDs!
  10. Well they certainly charged me postage to the UK. Perhaps Zurich (or just Ubu) as a special arrangement as the 53rd state of US? very efficient service from RP and parcel flew under the custom radar
  11. Mine's just arrived. Will be listening very soon
  12. I did have to check it wasn't April 1st. Not because Van deserves this award any less than anyone else just that it sits so oddly with my image of him as someone sitting curmudgeoningly outside the establishment. I'd quite like to witness the investiture (is that the correct term) as the idea of Van kneeling before anyone makes me smile broadly After so many years producing such good music it's an accolade deserved. The run of albums from "Astral Weeks" to "Veedon Fleece" is, for me, the strongest run of any non-Jazz artist. Every one is a stone cold winner Coincidentally started today (before this news) by listening to "No Method, No Guru, No Teacher", "St Dominic's Preview" (Coonie Kay and Leroy Vinnegar play on a track each) and then "Wavelength". Three albums from different stages of his career but all three quintessentially Van and all three equally marvellous. I was reflecting whilst listening to it that for me "No Method...." is the last consistently great album he produced although I've not kept up beyond "The Healing Game". I've seen him about live ten or so times and never been disappointed - hearing him play chunks of "Astral Weeks" about five years ago was sublime
  13. I've a stack of Dunmall Cds and I've not been disappointed by any. There's great variety in his catalogue and as Bev's post suggested it's far from all paint-stripping. In fact I'd go as far to say that little of it is The Mujician's are uniformly marvellous, the two Hat Arts are also very fine but quite difficult to track down these days. I'm very fond of the band he had with Kevin Norton that recorded on CIMP. There's so many of the Duns that I find it hard to get a grip on that part of the catalogue. A more recent sextet 'Mumuksuta' features Neil Metcalfe's flute to great effect and could be said to have elements of the 'spiritual' I guess
  14. "beauty is a rare thing" thank you Ornette. RIP
  15. Yes, welcome Olie. I'm enjoying Somersaults
  16. On your 'Orders' page there is a listing (of one at the moment) headed 'Purchases'. Click on the 'Order ID' usually a six figure-two/three figure. You should now see the Order details, including the messages relevant to that order. Top Right will be the Seller's contact/payment details and feedback score below it in the same pane is the "Leave seller feedback" button
  17. Once you've started with Discogs it's a slippery slope - at least that's what I've found
  18. Jerome Cooper Quintet - Outer and Interactions [About Time]
  19. Not sure what your definition of 'crazy money' is but this copy's reasonably priced http://www.discogs.com/sell/release/6606414?ev=rb shipping could be the issue though Another Jazzos satisfied customer here It's worth tracking down. I've not listened to it for a while now and thank you for prompting me to take it out for a spin
  20. "icon" and "iconic". Never a day goes by anymore without someone, or something, being described thus
  21. John Carter, Bobby Bradford - Self Determination Music [Flying Dutchman]
  22. and I wonder whether that there is not the key for other folk's negativity. I'm not saying it's the key to your opinion as you've clearly heard the album and made a judgement - your 'watered down' is not dissimilar to my own 'not shy with its influences' I suspect As for that teenager? I'd be tempted to give them a Mary Halvorson album
  23. Gunter Hampel - Enfant Terrible [birth Records] Black Artists Group - In Paris, Aries 1973 {Rank reissue]
  24. Marc Levin Ensemble - Songs Dances & Prayers [sweet Dragon]
