Reflex played London Jazz fest a couple of years ago and were very impressive (I think I'm repeating myself from up thread, sorry). My first real exposure to Virelles- check out his Pi disc, very interesting and different from your run of the mill piano leader date tapping into some interesting rhythms I assume from his Cuban heritage without sounding like Cuban Jazz. One of the few discs these days that is too short

It's a solid album, a solid recommendation. For me, over the last few releases Jen Shyu's vocals and Marcus Gilmore's drumming have been two key components... they've loomed large for me so their absence makes Functional Arrhythmias feel, as much as i like it, like a bit of a transitional record, the start of a new phase. Not that that's necessarilly a bad thing and it may just be some classic projecting on my part... I guess for me it's just a less exciting album than the earlier albums on Pi... more refined but more dry... any thoughts? I'm still buying every Coleman album as they come out and I'm with Xybert on this. I've really enjoyed the preceding Coleman releases to Functional Arrythmias as I heard a greater depth to the overall sound. As someone not usually keen on vocals I've really taken to Shyu's vocals. I've found that I've been a bit underwhelmed by FA and its strpped back sound. Coleman and Finlayson still doing it for me but Tidd and Rickman's return just seems to me to take the music back some years. I still enjoy it as a Steve Coleman album but miss the breadth of sound on the 2007/8 sessions on Pi. I hope he chooses to record and release something by his Reflex Trio with Virelles and Gilmore which was dynamite live Reflex trio did get recorded, kinda. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9h6zLfBr-M Wow, thanks. Now why didn't i think to look there too...doh!

You are responsible for my first vinyl order in a quarter of a century, Mark! Much as I hate the whole 'vinyl only' exclusivity, my Keith Tippett fixation would not let this pass! Will go straight to CD-R on arrival. Thanks for bringing it up. Heavens, I'm not sure I can shoulder the responsibility....you'll be buying a turntable next, ditching the beloved MP3 and buying opera box sets before you know it! I don't think you'll be disappointed by this - KT and the others are all on top form

I never realised there was such a demand for 80s electro pop. Good luck!

prompted by previous posts. It is good, indeed. Followed by some more Dewey

Nice piece CT, thanks. I learned a fair deal about someone I should have paid more attention to when he lived, like going to see him perform with Steve Noble as in the photo that accompanies your piece (Cafe Oto, London I think). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmtomKa5yCo

Thanks for noting this. I got a copy from Soundohm as per your suggestion. Arrived very promptly. Music here seems very fine. I do like bass clarinet. Plenty of listening to had here. Packaging of this set is deluxe! Pleased you got it it. It's well worth it. I actually received a second set by mistake last week and wondered when I posted it on if it might be for you as it went north of the border thanks, that explains how my set from Italy appeared to have been posted in the UK. and why the packaging had been opened! Glad to be of service

I'll share a beer with you on this one. Dim memories of really enjoying the Slim Chance albums in my teenage years but haven't heard anything by him/them in decades

Synergy! I just ordered this today after it popped into my mind last night. $5.50. damn, that's got to be the bargain of the day!

Thanks. I really enjoyed his playing with Arrive but for some reason never invetigated his leader dates. Time to change that with this, I think

I have that one from original release time. Nicely oddball. Late to the party here as usual as only just purchased this week. I think it's an album with some lovely writing, especially for the brass. I'm less keen on but enjoy the guitar features. I detect little or any folk influence but they may be cloth ears. It led me to this one which has similar brass voicings Harris Eisenstadt - Woodblock prints [No Business]

That label's building up a nice catalogue. Waclaw Zimpel's Stone Fog is a very fine example

Thanks very much for highlighting these. They look right up my street

Pilz should feel honored! Pilz is someone whose name pops up enough but I don't really know his playing. Would like to though. Discussed this over in recommendations: I'm intrigued as the image doesn't display. I first came across Pilz on the Manfred Schoof Quintet double disc compilation on ECM which was a revelation I'm a sucker for bcl so I dug around and have only found very interesting sessions when he's featured.

Can't seem to find this online, samples anywhere ? I bought it blind (or deaf?) through Discogs. i don't think I saw any samples., sorry. You might see if Soundohm (who list the label) have samples - they sometimes do. I also saw it listed on French site Metamkine Sound is excellent (on the one LP I've listened to). Music is great
