  1. I'm always interested in anything that Rob Mazurek releases as i've found him consistently interesting and challenging for many years now. Very interested in this Octet release that combines his sao paolo and chicago confreres http://www.cuneiformrecords.com/bandsHTML/robmazurekoctet.html a must buy in this household
  2. Agree and the two tracks I've listened to bear out your opinion
  3. None taken; I knew that was the reason. We prefer our sports odd and complicated. Now that cricket thing has some possibilities; I can't figure it out for shit. I don't really get the scoring, but a sport where a guy can score 100 runs in one at-bat is intriguing. The ball they use is hollow, which I found out by chance while walking by a cricket game and picking up an errant ball to toss back to the players. Cricket is pretty big in Brooklyn because we have a large number of folks from the Caribbean who all played it in their home countries. No cricket ball I ever got hit by whilst batting inadequately was ever anything but solid and very hard. Not sure where the hollow Brooklyn-ball comes from. Always happy to derail a thread with cricket talk and I can't believe I missed the opportunity here earlier and now back to what I suspect will be an excrutiating and cringe-making performance by LA - how can it be anything but?

    Anthony Braxton

Braxton concert available for a week on BBC. I'm not sure about international listeners but hopefully some interested parties can listen http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01ppwxk
  5. The point is made that this suits neither record companies (who want somewhere on the high street to sell their wares) or other businesses who are likely to lose other business if dad is reluctant to make the trip to town. I spent nearly every Saturday between the mid-70s and early noughties record/book shopping, spending money elsewhere on coffee, food, other trinkets, not to mention parking fees. I think I deliberately visited Nottingham and Sheffield once each in 2012. The other city visits were because I was there for other reasons. Magnify that... And I think most of us will agree with this: ******************* Good history lesson here too from an industry insider. http://www.bbc.co.uk...t-arts-21028803 Quite interesting hearing the reactions today all over the media - it's almost like the death of a major celebrity. No HMV by the time I left Reading in 1979 nor in Southampton when I left in 1984 I don't think. Certainly two HMVs in Reading by the 90s. . I was never a great fan of the chain, except the Jazz dept in Oxford Circus branch mid-80s where I went on my early Jazz discovery trips before I braved Mole and Rays. In the last ten years I've generally avoided them because of their higher pricing policy - they stll, even this month, want £15 for a new ECM release which a local indie will sell for £12.49 - no contest I wonder whether the "celebrity obits" are being written by folk that spent lots of time in the stores.
  6. Karl Berger - the Peace Church concerts everyone plays well but Dave Holland's contributions are particularly powerful
  7. Clifford, Happy Birthday! I hope the vinyl's rare and spinning.....
  8. how is that Clifford? Interesting line up indeed but hefty price tag to europe I didn't take to the 'year of the boar' release much and was underwhelmed by that line-up live but anything with Adasiewicsz is worth my attention I find
  9. MIne's pre-ordered. I think the new Convergence Quartet's due on No Business - maybe that's what you were thinking of? Both feature AH after all and I think he may have posted the info somewhere - or my imagination's playing fast and wild again.....
  10. Nice to see quality control at Blue Note's design centre hasn't dipped for the cover art... Hope (and expect) the music'll be better.
  11. Thanks for posting. Ordered the Gustafsson/Guy duo LP 'Sinners not saints'. Been searchimg for a long time and difficult to find as 'out of stock. the discount made it just about justifiable
  12. BIg fan of Sierra Nevada here. Marketed as a 'boutique' beer here in UK with price to match but tastes great. If some of you serious US beer-heads think it's not too good and betrays the size of the operation then I can't wait to taste some of the smaller operation's ales. 30 year ago Michelob had a major import/marketing thrust and I still remember drinking, and enjoying, the 'exotic' taste of US (that wasn't Bud - yeeuuurgh). Got a soft nostalgic spot for it but I think my tastes have matured....
  13. Me too. I find it an invaluable source. The writing is what it is but the coverage is excellent especially for smaller labels
  14. I agree. I've enjoyed all of the Klang CDs. There's a new Silke Eberhard / Ulrich Gumpert CD on Jazzwerkstatt that I'm looking for. Big fan of Klang and I think this new one maintains the standard. Some very nice playing on some imaginative compositions - challenging in a non-challenging manner if that makes any sense at all?!
  15. Colinmce, I purchased the Dunmall and Law directly from both artists in the last couple of years. In both cases I obtained email addresses from their websites. Might be worth a go? Both albums deserve the effort for sure. Good luck
  16. Solidification - Arve Henriksen [Rune Grammofon]
  17. Sounds very tasty.Looking forward to it. Kenny plays at the Vortex in a quintet in January and I hope to be there if I can - I wonder whether they might try and present this project live
  18. Certainly well deserved. Good to see this release but also adventurous music getting recognition One thing confuses me - I could've sworn I purchased my copy in 2011. Was the official release delayed in any way Alex?
  19. Jason Stein - The story this time [Delmark] Mikolaj Traska - Inner ear, breathing steam [Kilogram] Steve Lehman - Dialect Fluorescent [Pi] Eddie Prevost - Meetings with remarkable saxophonists, vol.1 (Evan Parker) [Matchless] Henry Threadgill - Tomorrow Sunny/The Revelry, Spp [Pi] Guy/Weber/Nill - Games and Improvisations [intakt] Josh Berman & his Gang - There now [Delmark] and if the OP will sanction LP only releases then these Brotzmann/Noble/Edwards - the worse the better [Otoroku} - LP only Mats Gustafssonn - Bengt [utech] - LP only The Thing/Barry Guy - Metal [No Business] - LP only Trzaska/Brice/Sanders - River Loam trio [No Business} - LP only
  20. Start with this one: I'm a big fan of Jonas Kullhammer, and this latest one is highly recommended: Not too out, but not too in either. I'll second that Rogue Art or the Nicole Mitchell with Michel Edelin 'Ethiopean princess...'
  21. Interesting selection there. I saw the Cherry Thing live and they were good. That Cohran looked interesting on release as did the Mitchell/Mitchell but samples of the latter made it sound very studied and missing some of Nicole Mitchell's usual vitality - I know samples are no way of assessing the release effectively but needs must. I'll admit total ignorance when it comes to the Pyramids but their appearance in London this year caused quite a stir Anyone heard this yet? Got a dream line up as far as I'm concerned and an intriguing premise
  22. Thanks for the clarification JSngry I think it's a fine idea for a thread especially as there's so many threads about reissues, past issues and the like on the board. I like the idea of a place to throw about recommendations and information about a living, vital and often 'below the radar' slice of music-making. As JSngry suggests a pitfall " the thread might get so crowded that thread readership becomes kind of "locked in" ". Well yeah, but I could list a heap of threads where that's the case - threads become the focus for some very specific subjects and audiences, not necessarily a bad thing for those enjoying discussing the minutiae of a particular reissue Threads about just one title often draw to a close once a few contributors have their say but in this broader thread that can still happen but also potentially intersect with other such conversations. Let's post on! and in that spirit I'll list a couple of other very interesting releases River Loam Trio (No Business) Gustafsson/Russell/Strid - Birds (denrecords)
  23. OK....so for those of us that haven't been about so long.....what's with all the rats? they seem to be highjacking a sound thread. Enlightenment?
  24. Yes - from Jazz Loft. How is it? Great IMHO. I've always been a big Vandermark "fan". How does the Resonance band writing compare/differ to his writing for say Vandermark 5 or work with Territory Band? Been toying with getting this. I find the first an intensely fascinating listen and I'm not sure I've completely absorbed it even now. Does 'Uniion' follow much the same path?
