What a great subject for a thread. A period that I know I need to know more about. Interestingly all the above mentioned titles have orbitted my 'must buy' list for some time. There's lots of musicicians whose music I enjoy that I think were playing this scene - Rivers, Bluiett, Braxton, Threadgill, Leo Smith and I can't wait for some more informed posts on the subject

Yeah, it originally appeared on Calig with the following front cover (the Trio jacket is an image from the back that has been tinted). As far as licensing goes, I believe that Trio would have gotten the rights from Berger. No other Calig jazz LPs have Japanese pressings that I've seen, but Trio issued other Berger-related sessions dating to that time period (Muun Music Universe, Kalaparusha/Karl Berger LP). Interestingly, this Calig date came out on CD via Enja, which also released an excellent '70s Karl Berger session called With Silence. Thanks Clifford - I thought you might be the man for the enquiry. Does the Calig have extensive notes? there's lots of Japanese on my insert and I'm intrigued. I'm a fan of the Enja and the MMU LPs and would love to hear/afford the Kalaparusha

Karl Berger - We are you [Trio, Japan] anyone know the connection between Calig and Trio? I'm assuming this LP was originally Calig released and licensed by Trio. Damn fine music either which way

I'd heartily recommend it. It was one of the last AH sessions I came to. If you like AH (which you do) there's no real reason not to get it. They produce an interesting sound together- in fact on my first listen I couldn't hear much rapport but further investigation has this as a worthy session where two masters are evident. Some fine AH playing. I've come to value it for its gentle adventureness

all over both. Adasiewicsz at Oto with his Sun Rooms trio was very impressive. His recording with Brotzmann is likewise - all comes together nicely

How is it Bev? I'll admit to never having heard the Ogun and I feel i should rectify that. I'm just listening to the extended sample on the Cuneiform site and it's intriguing. I do wonder whether two CDs worth of sax trio might be too much of a good thing

Thanks for posting this, it's made my day I'm all over this as soon as it raises its head. There's some fine players in that Orchestra - Haarla, Aaltonen, Lungqvist, Pohjola to name a few. TUM is proving a welcome home to WLS and long may the relationship prosper

Nicely presented. Love to get the one with Adasiewicsz but with postage at more than 50% extra of Cd price it's less attractive. The recent postal rate rise to UK is restricting one-off purchases from small labels/musicians I'd love to support.

Me too. Keep playing it but never quite warming to it in the way I have to almost every other WLS release. I'll continue to presevere though as it's such a major statement
